Admittedly, I do not attend very many stake or ward firesides. My work schedule and family obligations leave me with very little time. It is more than a few days 'til next Sunday and I want to know the answer before then lol. What are the procedures for scheduling speakers for firesides? Do they have to belong to the stake they're going to give their talk? I seem to recall Dr. Daniel Peterson (LDS scholar) speaking at firesides all over the place, from Alaska to Florida, but I might have misunderstood him.

Funny how every time I think I know everything about the church organization I learn something completely new :D

Not sure who does the scheduling, but I would guess it would be under the direction of the local bishop or stake president. They do not have to be members of that congregation, and depending on the topic and the person may not even be members of the church. When a BYU sports team travels, they usually try to schedule a fireside in the area they are visiting.

Nice, thank you. It makes sense, since we are all brothers and sisters, that there wouldn't be restrictions on the bishop or stake president on who to invite. I didn't know that about non-members though :D

Good question about the Firesides of Dr. Daniel Peterson. From Australia, Austria, Albania and South Africa. Don't think he has appeared in Antarctica, although Arabia is affirmative. I imagined he was able to reach new heights on the Dubai Tower.

I would add, though, that where the speaker of a (purely hypothetical, of course!) fireside is a (purely hypothetical) politician during a (purely hypothetical) re-election year, and this (purely hypothetical) stake is not the (purely hypothetical) politician's (purely hypothetical) home stake; this may (hypothetically speaking) be somewhat improper.

One of our members of lds.net travels all over the west doing firesides. I've been to one of his here in Utah and it was awesome.

When I was in YW we had John Bytheway speak at one of our Stake firesides. He was awesome. :)

ETA: And this was in California, not Utah. He flew out Saturday night and stayed the night at the home of our Stake Pres. then flew back home right after the fireside.

Would this formula work as well for Utah politicians?
