Hello all,

Please could somebody help me with a question?

Do Arizona Mormons have the same accent as Utah Mormons?

If not -what is the Arizona accent like?

Thank you :)

Why would Mormons in Arizona and Utah have a different accent from other people in those states? (I'm not nit-picking - I'm just interested in why you specify "Mormons" in your question.)

To my ear, everyone from the Rocky Mountains region sounds more-or-less the same.

in the past, there were different immigrations from europe, and also from different areas of the US when people converted to the gospel, and they tended to stay grouped together, so you have a few different prominent influences on speech accent in various parts in utah. Where i'm from ts that are in the middle or end of the word tend to be silent... I think north utah has a slight british influence.

I don't think there is an accent that set Utah or Arizona apart. Southern California has a "language" that is different, that does stand out.

Arizon has a lot of farmers, so the women's hands are a little rough and they have a grip that gets your attention. It's the Utah hair that sets them apart. When we travel to Utah we can pretty much sit back and point them out; "yep, she's a native. That ones a 'wanna be'"

I'd look at the hair and the hands!!

I think some Utahn's do have a distinct accent. I grew up in Utah and have lived in Arizona for some time, and I can tell when I hear a native Utahn speak. As a recent example, on the radio here they had audio of a lady in N. Utah describing the recent earthquake, and she totally sounded like a Utahn.

I'm not sure if Arizonans have a distinct accent, maybe in some rural areas, but in the metro areas like Pheonix you have to look hard to find a native Arizonan, most people are transplants, a lot from the midwest.

I served my misison in Spain, and members there claimed they could pick out Utah missionaries just by their accent.

Agreed on this. However, I am a native of AZ and still live here. Having served my mission in TN and KY I was often teased about my distinct LACK of accent. Funny stuff - they used to tell me that I "talk like those people on TV" (read with a southern accent in your head).
