Now I'm sure that Cher Lloyd is a thoroughly nice young lady, but I cannot understand why Cheryl Cole (whom I have always considered to be quite a sensible person) thinks she has a better chance of winning than Gamu Nhengu, who can at least get through a song without bursting into tears. Though I hate to agree with the tabloids, it's sheer madness!

(Yes, I know I already said it on the Current Events forum, but I'm saying it here too!)

So that is why you have two threads with same name... I ofcourse have no idea about this so I dont say a word.... Maybe one thread is enough... which one?

Most likely this one Maya. Though it's all over the newspapers here, it probably doesn't quite qualify as a "current event".

Who is Cheryl Cole?

Sorry Pam - Cheryl Cole (nee Tweedy) is a British pop singer and wife (soon to be ex-wife) of football naughty-boy Ashley Cole. All that is by the way though - Cheryl's main claim to fame at the moment is that she's one of the judges for "The X-Factor", the UK equivalent of "American Idol". Having been off work with malaria throughout most of the auditions, she's now back as mentor of the girls' category....and you can see what people have been making of her decisions:

X Factor fans' fury as Cheryl Cole snubs contestant Gamu Nhengu - Telegraph

(The Daily Mail's article consistently referred to her as "Mrs. Cole" - which is of course her correct name and style, but there's got to be a subtle snub there.)

I've just remembered Cheryl was there at the beginning of the audition stage, but fainted in the middle of one show.

Jamie, I'm sorry to break this to you, but this board is made up of alot of Americans. These Americans* do not typically watch British programming. I'm sorry, my friend, but someone had to tell you this.

*I am one of "these Americans"--I have no idea who are any of the people named in the previous posts. And football to me, I believe, is something entirely different than what you are thinking of as football. :D

LOL - thanks Beefche. I generally assume that since we get bombarded with American Idol, America's Next Top Model, Dancing With the Stars as well as our own versions of all these shows, you guys are similarly cosmopolitan in your viewing.

However, I know for a fact that you watch Mr. Bean and Mrs. Bucket (as in "The lady of the house speaking!")

Yes and you're quite right about football. To you guys it means Rugby with motorcycle helmets!

Jamie123,

Does watching 'Last of The summer Wine' count?

I stumbled onto this British comedy a few years ago on PBS and loved it, the only problem is they only show it for a few months then rotate it with something else.

Now if I need a fix from time to time I can YouTube it and get some good laughs.

Bill Owen, who plays Compo Simone has been called the British Red Skelton. It is the longest running comedy in Britain and longest running sitcom in the world.

LOL - yes I used to love that show in its heyday. Compo keeping ferrets down his trousers and scaring the girls with whatever was inside his matchbox. (It was never revealed!)

By the way - did you ever see Bill Owen when he was not in character as Compo? You wouldn't believe it was the same man!

It's generally because America takes all of our TV programmes and copies them, making their own version, then take all the credit. Just look at "the office" for instance :P

Yes, I did get to see a brief interview of Bill Owen while I was surfing the net on some info about him back when I found out about the show.

He was a well groomed handsom man unlike his scruffy appearance as Compo in his 'wellies'. He was aso very well spoken with a much milder accent.

I really had to listen quite closely at times to pick up some of his sayings while in character. I got to learn what the 'Gigis' were from a co-worker who is married to a lady from England.

I love the characters and the countryside scenes.

Long live Compo,Clegg, Foggy and of course that sexy little vixen Nora Batty, and God Bless Sid's cafe and all of the rest of the wonderful characters in that great show.

Wouldn't that have been something to find out what was in the matchbox?

Yes, The Office, American style, is one of my favorite shows. I tried to watch The Office, British mode, but I couldn't understand them! If I can figure out how to turn on the closed captioning on my TV, then I could probably enjoy the original more.

lol...i don't know if Cher Lloyd has a better chance of winning than Gamu Nhengu but i was happy with Cheryl's decision to put through Cher^_^ i liked Gamu and she's most definitely a good singer (and i guess she should've gone on to the live shows) but i like Cher better:) and it's not so much about the singing (i don't think she's better than Gamu) as it is (let me use a clishe here:p ) about the "whole package" she offers - i like her style, i like the fact her song choices are unusual for the X-factor, plus she's quite a good singer too^_^

p.s. to put it simple - i find Cher interesting whereas Gamu i find a bit boring...
