hordak Posted November 27, 2010 Report Posted November 27, 2010 2 tips. 1st. Join the Air force instead. 2nd. Pick a job that is applicable on the outside. I might turn out that military life in not your thing. Some jobs might seem cool at the time, but when you get out and discover there isn't a lot of aerial gunner job openning in the civilian selector and your going back to school while your peers who took "lame everyday jobs" are stepping into careers with 4-6 years experiences under their belt, your old job will not seems so cool. The military is big on giving it's personal enough training to do the job, but many times will not go to the lengths required for the civilian sector. Just because you can tow a multimillion dollar aircraft for uncle sam, doesn't mean the FAA or Southwest airlines will accept your qualifications, as an example. The biggest exception to this is medical. Because people in the medical career field see civilian patients (dependents/ retirees) they generally have to civilian license/education equivalent, (not referring just to Docs. but x-ray techs, dental assistants, physical therapist assistance etc) Quote
down_under Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 If you do join any service Army Navy or Airforce, the one rule applies.. Keep your head down. Quote

slamjet Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I would hate to join the military these days. As patriotic as I am, I can't stand the thought that the enemy is so ambiguous and if they get a splinter in your custody, you're court marshaled. The country is so polarize that shooting anyone would likely get you into trouble. Even some of the Generals are into political correctness. No thanks. Quote
QuestionableSanity Posted March 29, 2011 Report Posted March 29, 2011 Go for it. I still wish I could enlist. =( Quote
dash77 Posted March 31, 2011 Report Posted March 31, 2011 Don't be fooled or exploited by the TV commerials that dramatisze the benefits and say nothing about the negattives. Quote
ModernLife Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Like other posters said, if you are going to join any branch make sure you join a job that is needed in the outside world. I am air force vehicle maintenence got a great job while in and got the skills and certs for this job in the civilian sector if i get out. Quote
NeuroTypical Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 If I had to do it over again, I would have done a stint in the military. Quote

MrBallroom Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 I went into the Marines after high school, and for me, it was the spiritual strengthening of my life that has defined the direction my life has taken, and has been the frame of reference on which most of my major decisions have been based. With three decades and change having since passed, what advice would I give? First of all, make sure you sign on the dotted on the line into a military occupational specialty (MOS) for job skills that are easily transferrable into a civilian job that will pay the bills and provide for either yourself, but also for a family as well. Second, make sure you stay as actively involved in the Church as possible. Given that it will be your first time away from home, you will have a chance to an influence for good on the lives of others who may not have the support mechanisms in their life that you have in yours. Make it appoint to be friendly and flexible in working with others, both in boot camp and beyond. Remember that today’s jerk in boot camp may be your section chief at your next base, so be sure to treat one and all with the same respect and dignity that all people should be treated with. A very important thing to remember: Make sure in your dealings with others, that you do nothing improper that can give your enemies something by which they can attempt to ‘hang you out to dry’. Do your best, be your best, remember who you are, and Godspeed in your wise choices… Quote
grandshahi Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Joining the military is very honorable. I am in my early 30's and I was a big wimp then. Looking back on it, I totally should have joined. I would feel honored if my son chose to join the military. Get all of the training you can. After you are out, you will be more mature and ready to find a career that fits. Good luck! Quote
Guest MormonBoy4Life Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 To be honest, don't do it. Go on a mission. It's a commandment. I am 19 and was close to making the same mistake as you at 18, same branch of service too. Mission first, Marines later. Quote
