ribbit Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 I got on this site to hopefully find people who were already canning, dehydrating, preserving foods, setting up water filtration for $ instead of $$$, etc. Is there somewhere else I can go? My local Mormon church doesn't answer the phone! I need help with this stuff and could really use the companionship on this journey, too. Quote
NeuroTypical Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Hi ribbit,Folks on this forum might be able to help you. But if you don't get what you're looking for, you can also try here: Got Lamp Oil It is an online community of mostly LDS people focused on preparadness issues. Happy canning! Quote
ribbit Posted April 6, 2011 Author Report Posted April 6, 2011 I can't seem to find people locally to help me learn. I like to learn by doing and by observation and I'm reading manuals and booklets. Quote

Most likely the phone you are calling is at the Mormon meeting house and you are calling when no one is there. There are a couple of things you can do if all else fails. 1. You can drop by the Mormon meeting house around 10:00 on Sunday. Hopefully you will not pick a "conference" Sunday when no one is there - if this happens - try the next Sunday. Chances are - this will not happen.2. You can Google "LDS mission home" and the area where you live. Look for something that says "Mission Info" or something like that. Call them and they will get you in touch with some Mormons that will help you.The Traveler Quote
havejoy Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 If you live in South Texas near Houston I would be willing to help you later this year. Quote
mnn727 Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Heres another site that would be a good resource - its non-Mormon though there are a number of Mormons that post there, its more of a homesteading site. and they have a couple of sections that would help you , primarily the 'Preserving the Harvest' section Homesteading Today - getting back-to-the-land practicing sustainable, agricultural, ecologically sound, energy efficient, self-sufficient lifestyles Quote

I don't know about other states.) have extension services. These services are to teach people to garden, bottle fruit, etc. They are a good resource. There should be a Relief Society sister whose calling is to help find resources for food storage for the people in the ward interested. Talk to you RS Pres or the Bishop. Also, Call your local Bishop's storehouse. They might be able to help direct you. Quote

Guest Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Also, check to see if you have an LDS cannery near you. They are open to the public and they teach you how to can your own stuff. You can also get supplies there for very cheap. Call this phone number 1-800-453-3860 ext. 83472, give them your address and they'll tell you where the cannery is closest to you. Hope this helps. ribbit Posted April 10, 2011 Author Report Posted April 10, 2011 All excellent suggestions. I did email my extension agent, asked about local people already doing this stuff. He's been helpful to me in the past. I am excited to find local classes, that would be the best! I always seem to be doing things out of books and I am never sure I 'get it right'. I don't want to 'get it wrong' when I am trying to put back food for emergencies! Is anyone else storing eggs? I read that a coat of mineral oil will preserve them for nine months. I just used my hands and popped them right back in the cartons. Quote
