Kawazu Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) Howdy, In a conversation on Facebook, I had brought up the Church's Relief Society as part of a tangent. My friend said: Relief society? Sounds like a knitting club to keep the women folk out of the hair of the elder beards and their man activities. Is there anything clever or informative I can say, by way of reply? My Relief Society knowledge is low. Edited May 11, 2011 by Kawazu Quote
NeuroTypical Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Suggest that he come say it to my wife's face, who is one of the only people in our ward who does actually knit - but she might place a knitting needle somewhere painful to remove. We're supposed to be a peaceful people, but some dumb comments are just best responded to with a little token violence. Quote
Wingnut Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 If the person is interested in actually learning about what Relief Society is, you can help with that. If they're just being snarky, then I'd let it be. If it's the former, I'd suggest perusing this year's visiting teaching messages. The General RS presidency has focused them on the history of RS, and I've found them helpful and enlightening. It helps to know why we were founded, what our purposes were/are, and how we are to accomplish them. It also gives a bigger picture and sense of belonging. Speaking of belonging, the Relief Society is the oldest and largest women-only group in the world. Stick that in your (friend's) pipe and smoke it. Quote
Kawazu Posted May 11, 2011 Author Report Posted May 11, 2011 Thanks, guys. I've known my friend for 20 years and we were just messing around. He's a pretty cool Catholic dude. I, on the other hand, deserve some scorn for the conversation I started on the Facebook. I think Pam has friended me, (don't look, Pam!) :) Just to be clear, is there some sort of equivalent to Elder within the Relief Society? My friend was asking… Quote
MorningStar Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Yes, but it's a secret. Shhhhhhh ...... Quote
Kawazu Posted May 11, 2011 Author Report Posted May 11, 2011 Just for the sake of relevancy on the subject of roles of women in Church, I found this blog post interesting: Women in the Scriptures: Around a Half Million Women Hold Leadership Positions in the LDS ChurchI haven't really taken the time to personally verify these statistics, though–numbers aren't my strong suit. volgadon Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Why would we have a Relief Society instead of sending the women home early so they could cook us lunch? Your friend's comment was ridiculous. Quote
RipplecutBuddha Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 You could have asked how often the Knights of Columbus suit up in their full armor, where the horses are kept, etc.... Quote

Bini Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Ok I found that to be funny! Lol. Ya never know how much truth there is behind some things. On a serious note, I'd still just "LOL" in response and laugh it off. A comment like that doesn't seem to want a serious answer. Quote

A comment like that doesn't seem to want a serious answer. My friend is both a gentleman and the scoundrel. (He's the same guy that e-mails me articles extolling the health benefits of coffee.)On a side note, if anyone is looking for some retro-videogame-comicbook style artwork, (or commissions of any sort), his Etsy profile is Acrylic Painting Frankenstein Monster Universal Boris by jacosta This is the Frankenstein painting. There are others. Also, to LOL is good advice. The conversation I started wasn't exactly serious in nature. Edited May 11, 2011 by Kawazu Quote
