Oh my gosh...I love the works by Jon McNaughton...truly an inspiration. I came across a female artist who showcased one of her incredible oil paintings at the Mesa Temple Visitor's Center last Sept. I forget her name & would love to to find out her name, plus see if there are any copies available of her work. The Visitor's Center was featuring artist's works for a short period of time & I can't remember if they were local artists or not. Her method was unbelievable as the people in the paintings literally came to life. The one picture that took my breath away was a picture of one of the 10 Virgins. This picture literally shined with an inner light...the light from the oil lamp, the eyes of the Virgin, etc. It was such an incredible painting & I would love to find this artist again, as well as, her works. If this sounds familar to anyone, please let me know.

I have 3 that I really enjoy:

Walter Rane

Liz Lemon Swindle

Jon McNaughton

Thanks for posting these. I've never heard of them, but I looked at Swindle's work on Google and liked it quite a bit. I especially like her depictions of Jesus (I'm not a fan of the blond, blue-eyed Jesus in so many LDS representations). I may have to find some prints of her work.

I love the sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks. I especially love his sculpture of Joseph Smith "The Vision". I love his sculptures at the Hawaiian Temple--"Hawaiian Motherhood" and "Lehi Blessing Joseph". The friezes on the Hawaiian Temple were also done by him and his brother J. Leo Fairbanks. Another of my favorites from Avard Fairbanks is "A Tragedy of Winter Quarters". This was originally shown at the reopening of the Chicago World Fair in 1934. That statue depicts a young father and mother, standing in a moment of silence over the open grave of their infant wrapped in a thin blanket. That particular sculpture always reminded me of my ancestors who came to Utah by wagon and handcart.

I am familiar with him but I had no idea some of the sculptures I have seen were done by him. I had just posted over the weekend this photo on facebook taken at the Hogle Zoo in SLC. The animals were sculptured by him.

I learned something new today.
