Holly3278 Posted October 22, 2006 Report Posted October 22, 2006 Today I am visiting a Mormon Church for the first time. I have become highly interested in the Mormon Church and have decided to make my first visit today. I do not have a dress to wear but I am wearing my Sunday best which is black dress pants and a nice sweater. I hope that they accept what I am wearing as I know that most of the women will be wearing a dress or a skirt. I don't have either unfortunately. Anyway, please pray for me. Also, how long will the service last or does it vary? Quote

inthearmsofsleep Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Awww... there's always next time! As long as what you wear isn't immodest, then they won't care. If you wore a clown suit, you might get several stares...but they wouldn't refuse you entry (unless you were causing a distraction or something). Quote
begood2 Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Maybe you would like to start with just the sacrament meeting instead of all three meetings? There is a short break between the meetings and some leave, because they are unable to stay for all three. The majority stay, but they don't make fun of those that have to leave early in my ward. Traveler Posted October 23, 2006 Report Posted October 23, 2006 Once when traveling I met a man (LDS) that had not been to church in a very long time. I invited him to come with me the next Sunday. He said all he had to wear was a clean tee shirt and levies. I said that I would wear a tee shirt and levies as well - I hoped no one would say something because I had attended Church (as a visitor) a couple times in a suit. Every one treated us very well - there were not problems. No one can control what someone might say. Children have a tendency to say things in their innocence that may cause some embarrassment. I invite all that wish to - to come enjoy an LDS worship service. The Traveler Quote

insertwittynamehere Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 When we go to church, we go to serve/praise The Lord. Its appropriate to do this in our sunday best. For some this is a nice dress, for some this is a nice pair of dress pants. For some this can be a clean pair of levies and a clean tee. As long as it is your best, and you mean well, it is appropriate. The Lord knows the true intentions of your heart and even if you dont have time to take a shower before you go to church and go looking dirty for whatever reason, The Lord is grateful for your decision to attend. We attend church to strengthen our testimonies... our testimonies cannot sit stagnant. They are either constantly decreasing or increasing and thus, any time we are able to attend church is a help to our spirit. Being in our best dress adds to our attitude and puts us in a positive mind set so as long as one sincerely has on what they consider their best, good for them. If they dont for an honest reason, kudos to them for still making the decison to come to church and I would expect members of that ward to give kudos to them as well. I can only imagine they would understand. Though, we know not everyone or ward is flawless and in those cases we just have to get over those members who would shun those who cant quite make it to church in their sunday best or what others might consider ones best and realize their not perfect either. There has recently been a case in my YSA branch where a young lady who is not a member but is investigating The Church has been attending our ward for a few months now was recently approached by an older lady in the ward. This investigator happens to not own any skirts or dresses so she wears pant suits (which we all love her for and are all are completely fine with and just love that she comes to church) so this lady approaches her and tells her the suits arent appropriate and that she needs to wear dresses. Also, if she isnt going to stop wearing them, she needs to not come at all. Now this was completely uncalled for and this is exactly what I'm talking about above. There are very rare cases in The Church where this happens and we are members and investigators need to remember and realize that these are individuals who are making calls that are not their own. This young lady has not been back to church since and as a ward we are desperately trying to call her and get her back. We love her.. she's such a sweet girl and what she wears has absolutely nothing to do with anything. She wears what she considers best and we appreciate it. I think she is finally realizing that this older lady had no right to tell her not to come to church and is thinking about coming back.. which we're extremely glad for. But anyway, this post wasnt meant to be so long but I found this story related quite directly so I thought I'd share. --insert Quote
begood2 Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Insert (great post), I enjoyed reading your post. I also agree with you that it's not our place to be judging other people's worthiness and attire for church attendance. PS: I hope the lady that you spoke of that was investigating the church decides to return. Quote
Laureltree Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Many use to kneel at the saviors feet just to hear his word, some would be dressed in such devine materials while others wore rags and older robes. I do not believe in my heart that the lord cares what you wear, its where your heart is that counts. hugs and prayers LaurelTree Quote
Blessed Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 LT, Your post reminded me when I was in France at a small country church. They were serving communion and we had to go up to receive it. One old lady crawled on her knees to get it. It was the most moving thing I have ever seen. Quote
Guest bizabra Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 Women are discouraged from wearing pants to a service? Really?BIZ: Yes. When I was a young mormon grasshopper, I thought I would be struck dead by lightning if I even so much as touched a toe into the chapel if I was wearing pants. The boys could go through the chapel if we were having some activity in the cultural hall for which pants for girls was permissable, but us girls would be reminded that it was "irreverent" for us to do this. It was verboten. It was almost considered to be a "sin". Quote
blazius Posted October 27, 2006 Report Posted October 27, 2006 I’ve been thinking of visiting a Mormon church for some time now, just to get a feel for the attitudes toward me, an outsider, and the atmosphere among the parishioners. I don’t know why, but I am reluctant to attend. It’s not because of my clothes (I have the proper attire), and it’s not because of my skepticism of the religion. I guess the reason I’m reluctant to attend a Mormon service is that I’m afraid of being judged. What I mean is, will I be frowned upon for attending only as a seeker? Will I be ostracized because I’m looking for answers? Will I be singled out for being single, at 28? Anyway, this is my dilemma.blazius Quote
