Backroads Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Another girl on another forum is trying to convince me to try this. Any experiences with it? (Oil pulling=swishing oil through the mouth for 15-twenty minutes for health benefits) Quote
Dravin Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 What is the supposed benefit and what is the supposed mechanism for that benefit? Oil is usually used on skin to trap in moisture but if your gums are needing to be coated in oil to keep them moist that's one serious case of dry mouth. Quote
applepansy Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 What kind of oil? Coconut Oil has amazing health benefits but its not liquid unless you warm it up. Olive oil has health benefits too but it has to get into your system more than absorbed in the mouth. I don't think I could gargle with any oil. Quote

Wikipedia had this: Oil pulling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaTwo things stood out to me:While scientific evidence is lacking to support any systemic benefits of oil pulling, some studies have suggested that it may reduce oral plaque, halitosis, and gingivitis. So does regularly brushing and flossing, and they don't require this:The practitioner rinses the mouth with approximately one tablespoon of oil (sesame and sunflower oils are the most recommended) for 15–20 minutes on an empty stomach (before eating/drinking) then spits it out. beefche Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 I"m still confused on the benefits of doing such? There's no way people are doing it for better oral hygiene--I'm guessing it's either a weight loss thing or an overall health thing. But, I guess people stop using their brain when they hear such great stats (that are probably not supported by any real data). Think about it--first, can you honestly say that anyone can gargle for 15 min straight???? Second, how does gargling promote weight loss or overall health? Maybe if you are gargling every hour for 15 min it will cut down the time you have to snack? Stupid fads..... Quote
Backroads Posted June 28, 2012 Author Report Posted June 28, 2012 I heard something about some sort of detox??? Quote
Guest Posted June 28, 2012 Report Posted June 28, 2012 Having way too many snakeoil-believing people in my family, my guess is that they claim the oil pulls out toxins from the mucous membranes. Probably some nonsense about oil-soluble free radicals or some such. Quote
Backroads Posted December 8, 2012 Author Report Posted December 8, 2012 Okay... I actually started doing this a couple of times a week after a couple of dentists told me it's better than your average mouthwash--apparently gets into all the nooks and crannies. My mouth actually feels cleaner. Quote
halie Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Yeah, my dad and I were both diagnosed with irritable bowel years ago, but now that all this is going on with my dad, it's looking like it's more than that. Quote
Iggy Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Okay... I actually started doing this a couple of times a week after a couple of dentists told me it's better than your average mouthwash--apparently gets into all the nooks and crannies. My mouth actually feels cleaner. After having to deal with periodontal disease for the past 6 years, and the loss of half of my teeth as a result of not taking care of it properly. Was not told that this disease needs to be treated on a daily basis~after the root scrape and deep cleaning.Any way ~ new dentist, aggressive treatment to save the remaining lower teeth. Brush with nearly any toothpaste of your choice. He prefers Crest. Using this little brush shaped like a tree, http://www.gumbrand.com/interdental-brushes/ brush between the teeth close to the gum line. Then I am to floss, rinse & gargle with water. Then rinse with 2 teaspoons of Act mouthwash. Swish through the teeth for 20 to 30 SECONDS. Spit, do NOT swallow. Do NOT drink or eat for 30 minutes after. My gums had receded so much I was afraid the teeth would just fall out on their own. After 3 months, the receding has stopped, and now more of my teeth are covered by my gums. I had deep pockets of 4-5 also. Last Monday went in and the pockets are at 2-3. Great improvement. Because I will have a partial retainer on the lower jaw - I will have to be extremely diligent with my cleaning of those remaining teeth. The upper teeth will be extracted. There is too much bone loss to save them. Had I been flossing, using the interdental brushes, and using a mouthwash, my upper teeth would not have gotten beyond saving. Personally, I can not see how swishing oil in your mouth where no natural oil ever exisits will help to keep your mouth, teeth and gums clean. Act is a moderately priced mouth wash. Give it a try and see how clean your mouth feels after.Note: Flossing & using the interdental brushes removes plaque and food debris. Swishing anything liquid in your mouth for 15 minutes will rid you of all solids - but it will not removed plaque. Quote
