prisonchaplain Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Disney DVDs!Apparently Disney gave a license to China to produce Disney classics. They dvds have Chinese characters, and the menu is bilingual. However, the soundtrack is the original English sound, and the movie is standard Disney quality. These non-pirated, legally licensed, 'made in China' DVDs are running about $30 (+$20 for postage) for a 24-movie set. It's probably legal, but is it right? These would cost you about $500 from disney.com. Quote
john doe Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I would guess that a large part of the answer might lie in how you came by the dvd's. Are they legally sold in the US, does Disney have a legal problem with the import or sale of them? Are there copyright issues? Quote
prisonchaplain Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 I would guess that a large part of the answer might lie in how you came by the dvd's. Are they legally sold in the US,It's one of those "too good to be true, but it really seems to be true" kinda deals. There are a few different vendors on Ebay. All of them have high #s and very positive ratings. All insist they are selling legally copyrighted Disney DVDs from China--that they are not bootleg, or pirates.does Disney have a legal problem with the import or sale of them? Are there copyright issues? There's that slight doubt. Maybe Disney doesn't know, or probably, this is an unintended, but totally legal endeavor. The DVDs are China-produced, with Chinese printing. Yet, here they are for sale here. Is it legal to sell media produced and copyrighted in China in the U.S. If not, the vendors are setting themselves up for serious criminal charges, since Ebay is a very public venue, with addresses etc. The packaging includes an actual address, in the U.S.Maybe this is simply a case of buyers getting a product at over 90% off if they are willing to put up with some foreign language packaging/labeling. Dr T Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Do they have regional limits for playback? My brother in law bought a dvd off of e-bay and it wouldn't play here in teh U.S. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 Nope. They play just fine--and my system, ironically, is a Disney Princess VCR/DVD player, hooked to the same brand TV (made by memorex). The ad boldy proclaims there are no regional limits. BTW, I noted that Dora the Explorer is now being sold out of the Philippines, with the same claim--though that one says it uses VCDs. Quote
LionHeart Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 My question is: Assuming this is true, how bad is Disney really ripping us off? L.H. Quote
sf49erfan4ever Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 That happened to my dad. He bought a movie on ebay, and it wouldn't work on our DVD player. The DVD was made in another country, and was completely useless to us. The guy wasn't very pleasant when we contacted him about returning it, either. If I remember correctly, we had to file a formal complaint with ebay. Quote
Fiannan Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 If you do any travel you need to have a region free DVD player -- or know how to convert a standard player into region free. I have DVDs from all over the world so region free is required. We have the Disney Channel and if I had a DVD recorder I could record directly off of the TV. So in my opinion I would not care less about if a DVD is legit or not since almost all movies appear on various movie stations soon after release to DVD and (as long as the DVD is only being used for private purposes) I see no moral problems involved. CrimsonKairos Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 It's like I always say...copyright means I have a right to copy. j/k Quote
Latter Days Guy Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 We've got 2 DVD players and a DVD writer, all are multi regional. I buy a lot of DVD's from abroad because they are usually out a good few months before they are here in the UK. Why's this in the gospel discussion section? Quote
shanstress70 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I'm confused about why a Disney movie costs $500 if it's produced in the US. Are you talking about movies that are still in the theater? Quote
Outshined Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I'm confused about why a Disney movie costs $500 if it's produced in the US. Are you talking about movies that are still in the theater? He's talking about a set of 24 movies. Quote
shanstress70 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 DUH!!! Now I see... missed that part the first time I read it. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted November 14, 2006 Author Report Posted November 14, 2006 I'm confused about why a Disney movie costs $500 if it's produced in the US. Are you talking about movies that are still in the theater? They average $20 a piece, and this was a 24-movie set. Add our 9.8% sales tax, and you have over $500. And, no, these are classics--bambi, dumbo, etc. Why's this in the gospel discussion section?Oops! Quote
BenRaines Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 All I can say is I would be very suspicious. How is that saying "When it sounds too good to be true it probably is". Ben Raines Quote
Fiannan Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 #1 question is -- are the DVDs of excellent quality? Quote
prisonchaplain Posted November 14, 2006 Author Report Posted November 14, 2006 #1 question is -- are the DVDs of excellent quality?I can't guarantee that they'll last as long as the American ones, but on first play, they seem to be as good. Quote
Fiannan Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Something to think about is that probably most DVDs (like most of our clothing) is made in China. I would not suspect that a DVD bought from your source would be of an more inferior quality than one bought at Walmart. Quote
shanstress70 Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 PC, Do you feel comfortable giving me the link to the place where you bought these? I'm interested in getting them as well, since you were the guinea pig! Quote
Outshined Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 I've ordered a set myself. http://cgi.ebay.com/Disney-Collection-24-D...oQQcmdZViewItem Quote
shanstress70 Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Thanks... me too! This will be a great Christmas present for my son. Quote
prisonchaplain Posted November 15, 2006 Author Report Posted November 15, 2006 I've ordered a set myself. http://cgi.ebay.com/Disney-Collection-24-D...oQQcmdZViewItemThanks, Outshined. I can't access auction websites from my worksite computer--so you saved me from having to post "Check Ebay, look for Disney classic movie set." Links are so much easier. Quote
shanstress70 Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 I tried to do a search on ebay but the keywords I was trying was returning way too many results and I couldn't find it from that. And actually, from the link that Outshined sent me I was able to order it for $11.99 plus $17.99 shipping, for a total of $30 - that's unbelievably cheap! Quote
prisonchaplain Posted November 16, 2006 Author Report Posted November 16, 2006 WOW--you beat me by $20! Hope it works well. Quote
