Is there anything besides church buildings that I would recognize in Salt Lake City?

Until I saw the thread about City Creek I had never heard of it and my dad lives in North Salt Lake. When I saw where it was placed in a video just now I was left wondering if anything I remember from downtown Salt Lake City from when I grew up near there is still there at all.

I moved from Salt Lake City in Sept 1997 and the last time I was back there was in 2002 if I am remembering correctly.

I never saw the light rail before seeing that video of City Creek although I knew SLC had light rail. That picture of City Creek at night with the fountains looks real nice.

From the video it almost looked like City Creek was where ZCMI was. Is ZCMI still there? Is the tall JCPenney building still there? Are there other major changes besides City Creek that I haven't heard of in downtown Salt Lake City?

The street between the temple and the Joseph Smith Building is closed off and it's a park area now.

Oh and I think you'll recognize a few 7-11's, McDonalds, Burger Kings...I think you've seen those before. :)

The Eagle Gate is still there isn't it? Symphony Hall, Salt Palace although it's had a face lift, Delta Center which is called something else now- can't remember what. Pioneer Park is still there and full of homeless folks. We pass them everytime we leave my mother-in-laws house in Salt Lake to get to the freeway. City and County Building on 4th South and State is still there. Does the Walker Building light still flash? That used to be our weather man (along with Bob Welti) because we could see it from our front window. I remember the excitement of coming snow when it flashed red. The Hotel Utah which is of course, the Joseph Smith Building. The Lion House is still there. I love driving down South Temple and seeing all the old mansions and cathedrals. So stately and beautiful. I'd love to own one of those older homes on upper So. Temple. The U of U is what is almost unrecognizable to me now. I think I could still find where I went to pre-school there but upper campus is so different now.

Pretty much the area right around Temple Square is different. The Conference Center wiped out the entire block north of Temple Square, including the Deseret Gym where I had many childhood memories of diving off the high dive. The ZCMI mall and Crossroads mall are replaced with the new City Creek mall. Again childhood memories of playing video games in the arcade there. And the Delta Center (sorry the Energy Solutions center) is newish and the Gateway are new but pretty much that area was scary back in my childhood. The whole upper West and South side of the University of Utah is completely different.

Outside of that, the city is pretty much the same. Trolley Square is the same, the avenues are the same, Liberty park is the same, Foothill road is the same. South of Temple square down Main and State street are the same. Sugarhouse is mostly the same. And most important, the PIE PIZZERIA is the same.

aw... I miss the Deseret Gym too. :( And the little grocery store that was on the corner.... and was later Mormon Handicraft before it was torn down to make room for the Conference Center. Love the Conference Center but I miss the little things that made SLC feel small town.

How about those little shops outside ZCMI-especially the bakery? I remember as a kid what a treat it was to get a huge chunk of warm bread slathered with honey butter. And remember "Promised Valley" in that outdoor theater just east of the temple? And the temple lights coming on at the very end. I still get chills thinking about it. One of the wonderful memories of my childhood. I also remember when the temple was the tallest building in Salt Lake City.

I remember that too. I was just telling that to my cousin last week that I took to Temple Square for the first time.

I guess I asked for all those smart alec remarks;) about the roads and traffic lights and such. But, since I seldom went to 7-11's, McDonalds, and Burgerkings down town I don't actually remember those. The only food places I would have gone to would have been in the two malls that are no more.

I frequented a coin shop across from the JCPenney building which I remember because my dad used to work at JCPenney. And I remember a Dutch Store which is East a few blocks from that JCPenney office building.

Is that old train engine still in Liberty or Pioneer Park. I remember going inside it before they put a fence around it so you couldn't. I spent a lot of time at ZCMI mall and Crossroads mall. Wow both of those gone. I've never been in the new Conference Center and don't remember seeing it nor its construction at all.

I remember Sugarhouse because I used to go to a comic book store up there.

I don't remember the road between temple square and the Joseph Smith Memorial building being closed and becoming a park.

Even the Salt Palace and U of U has changed, wow.

At least Trolley Square is still the same. I remember going there a number of times.

I remember the Delta Center.

I think I need to find a time to go visit Salt Lake City again.
