Meerkatarmy Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 When I get baptized I will pay the tithe, am I right in thinking I can't do it until then? I am unsure how it works do I give the bishop 10% in cash or is it a standing order or what?I am off work sick on disability benefits so it won't be much, I feel embrassed that other people may be paying 1000's and all my 10% is worth is £170. I know it isn't about the size of the tithe but the willing heart that is important but I still think how many temples will that build? How many missionries will it feed? ETC Quote
estradling75 Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 After you are baptized. There will be an little box with tithing slips and envelopes by the door to the Clerk's or Bishop's office.Grab a slip, grab envelope, fill out the slip, put your money and the slip in the envelope. Seal envelope. Hand envelope to member of the bishopric. That is all any of the regular members might ever see or know about how you pay tithing (the handing of the envelope) Quote

Meerkatarmy Posted March 4, 2014 Author Report Posted March 4, 2014 Thank you for that. I let pride get the better of me. I can give other things than money, time skills etc. And when I can I will help missionires you are struggling financially etc Quote
Guest LiterateParakeet Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 You are not alone in the pride thing, trust me. I believe it is the last sin any of us will get rid of because any time we sin we are putting our will about God's. When we are sufficiently humble to stop doing that, we will stop sinning. :)That is the simplified version, but suffice it to say, I battle with my pride all the time. I think I'm making progress though. Also, remember the Lord doesn't NEED our money--he knows where all the gold and other riches are. He WANTS our hearts, and it sounds like you are giving that to him already, so good job! Quote
ditd Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 Ok firstly the act of paying tithing in the UK (I just moved away)You can do this 1 of 2 ways:Firstly as mentioned you can find forms and envelopes (usually outside the Bishop's office) to use (I usually keep a few at home).- You write onto the white one your name, ward and the details of your tithe and or other donations- you then tear off the white first page and put it into the envelope with your tithe and offerings (either cheque or cash) then keep the yellow page for your records- you then give the envelope to a member of the bishopric (either the bishop or his 2 counsellors) who I'm sure the missionaries can introduce you to or point outThe Alternative Method is that you can set up a standing order. For this it is best to talk to the ward clerk who will help you to do this as he will provide you with the appropriate details and in some ways it feels cleaner as you're not carrying money around and I always worry about my terrible counting abilities----------Gift Aid aka complicated bit - feel free to ignore-------------------------The good thing paying with a standing order is that if you are eligible for gift aid it can count towards your tithing - again your ward clerk will explain. Because gift aid is taken from taxes it means (rather basically) that any money you donate will have your income tax for that amount refunded to the applicable charity (the church). If you are able to gift aid your tithe, it means that you end up only paying roughly 8.5/9% percent tithe from your pocket because the government will make up the extra with taxes already paid. Again you can get advice from your ward clerk about your eligibility and exact amounts that you pay and the government will make up------------------------------------------------------------------------I agree with Suzie's post - 10% is 10%, sometimes it is so much harder to give that little when it is all that you have!I know you probably know the story :) but I thought in sharing this with you because it touches me every time: Quote
Roseslipper Posted March 4, 2014 Report Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) you start tithe paying when u r baptized, but if u want to donate money before your baptizted u may its the same method get the tithing slip and envelope, give it 2 someone in the bishopric. Dont concern yourself with your tithe amount we all earn different amounts of money example so my ten percent is different then yours and his and hers it doesnt matter. And it doesn't go around the ward who pays what. Tithing is a private matter. And your right we also tithe our time and talents to build up His kingdom. I never heard of the gift aid way before So how did u hear about the Church? Let us know when u will be baptized It will be a great day for you. And we will rejoice with u!!! :)Today is the day I was baptized so many years ago. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. Edited March 4, 2014 by Roseslipper Quote
Meerkatarmy Posted March 5, 2014 Author Report Posted March 5, 2014 I had two missionaries come to the door just at the right time of my life, I experience the help of Holy Sprit that day and everyday since. I read the book of Mormon and I know it is the truth and I know this church is the rightful one. I am eager to be baptized but don't want the bishop to think I am rushing things.I love the missionaries and owe them my salvation, I want them to baptize me. Also I would like to give them this to share to remind them of home Assorted Candy Hamper Large Quote
Sali Posted March 5, 2014 Report Posted March 5, 2014 Meerkatarmy, thank you for strengthening me today. Your humble words have really touched me and I really needed it. You sound a lot like me when I joined the Church. It is a wonderful feeling isn't it? I'm still here 30 years later. Being baptized was the best decision I ever made and my baptism was very fast too. When you know it is right, then it is right for you. I have never regretted my decision, it changed my life for the better. Christ changed me so much and I am just so grateful for Him, as I don't know where I would be now without Him. Quote
