Vort Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Lectures on Faith are not considered doctrine/modern scripture. The Lectures were included as the "doctrine" portion of the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants, They were removed from the 1921 edition with other items; that were not considered official revelation and binding doctrine by the church. I would definitely not start there in my research fro insight on LDS beliefs about the Holy Ghost. I agree that the Lectures on Faith were never accepted as scripture and thus were removed from the Doctrine & Covenants. But my understanding is that they accurately reflected the Prophet's understanding of faith -- or at least they were Sidney Rigdon's summary of those understandings, approved by the Prophet for use in the School of the Prophets. So while perhaps they should be used with a bit of caution, I think they're an excellent place to start some research. Just_A_Guy 1 Quote
skalenfehl Posted December 9, 2014 Report Posted December 9, 2014 Disagree. Lectures on Faith are scripture and were specifically written as doctrine by Joseph Smith who held himself accountable to God for its content. Furthermore, by common consent, the LoF were accepted as scripture by vote of all members from the top down. The LoF were removed by a committee without common consent. My answer to the OP is read the Lectures on Faith. They constitute some of the most profound doctrine on the subject of faith that can be or has ever been written to understand what is required to come unto Christ. We must know who we worship so that we can know how to worship Him, another tenet of Joseph Smith. Quote
The Folk Prophet Posted December 10, 2014 Report Posted December 10, 2014 Interesting. Is common consent required to de-canonize something? Quote

If they were scripture they would be published as such... is their truth in them yes. Quote
skalenfehl Posted December 11, 2014 Report Posted December 11, 2014 I apologize. I started a new topic so as not to derail this thread. To the OP, my understanding of the Holy Ghost per LDS scripture is it is the Comforter, the record of heaven, truth of all things, that which quickeneth all things. The Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit and with the Father a personage of flesh and bone and the Son also a personage of flesh and bones, are all one God. In heaven, all are one. Quote
