anatess2 Posted January 19, 2017 Report Posted January 19, 2017 I just stumbled on this article. It was quite interesting. So, 217 counties flipped from blue to red in the 2016 elections, 209 of them flipped from voting for Obama twice, 128 of them flipped from voting against Bush and then voting for Obama then ending up voting for Trump. But this was not enough to sway the popular vote. Clinton flipped only 30 counties that voted red in 2012. Several of them in Utah. Interestingly, Clinton only got 27% of the Utah vote which is a lot lower than Obama got. This is, I think, due to McMullin taking votes from Trump instead of Clinton taking votes from Trump. So, can we conclude that Utah caused Trump to lose the popular vote? (Not like that matters or anything... just something interesting) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/11/15/the-counties-that-flipped-parties-to-swing-the-2016-election/?utm_term=.46359ebbdbdd Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted January 19, 2017 Report Posted January 19, 2017 I don't think Utah has enough people to single-handedly make up the official 2.9 million vote shortfall; regardless of how individual counties broke. anatess2 and Jane_Doe 2 Quote

That and despite what many would have you believe the popular vote is irrelevant. Both campaigns knew they needed to get Electoral College Vote. Both campaigns worked and planned what they needed to get the Electoral College vote... One campaign succeed... Any talk about how the other should have won is simply sour grapes at this point Quote

So correction the Popular Vote at the National Level is irrelevant (which is where people get the "didn't win the popular vote") The Electoral College votes are a state based system. With most (but not all) states having a winner take all system based on a state level popular vote. Quote

So the popular vote is quite important. This election shows that the electoral college is incredibly important as well, because it makes sure Florida, Texas, New York and California can't pick the president while Iowa, Vermont and Wyoming are ignored.
