Late last night, on October 30th, University of Utah student ChenWei Guo was tragically shot and killed in an attempted carjacking at the mouth of Red Butte Canyon.

Police believe the suspect to be Austin Boutain, 24. Deseret News reported that “Guo was shot just after a woman reported that Boutain had assaulted her and was in the canyon with a gun,” and that “Detectives believe the pair had been camping in the canyon.”

According to a KSL article, his parents came to Salt Lake City during the summer and the family was able to be sealed together.

I'm not sure why the death of this particular young man has affected me so much.  I didn't know him.   But there is just something about him and his story that has touched me.

This is a terrible thing.  I think part of what makes it so sad and touching is what he overcame and where he came from in becoming not just a member, but a missionary and example to others.

I'm glad that his parents were able to come and be sealed to him.  His story seems particularly inspirational with his background.

From what I've seen he was an international student from China?

It's a bad thing to have any murders, but when it involves an international student, it can be worse.  Do we know anything about how China is reacting to this?

Thus far, this is all that I've been able to glean from the South China Morning Post

Quote

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the Chinese embassy in the United States immediately requested information from police, and “urged police to quickly break the case” and provide assistance to the family.

She also noted that the embassy reminded Chinese citizens in the United States to pay attention to security due to recent prominent social and security issues in some areas, and the frequency of knife and gun incidents.

Boutain has a criminal history that includes drug, car theft and weapons charges in Minnesota and Alabama dating back to his days a juvenile.

I just read the article.  He set a powerful example of courage that can inspire many.
