Pookies Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 As I mentioned in another thread, I was on another forum that discusses news and current events. Of course the issue in Texas brought out all the bashers on the planet I think. People confusing the mainstream Church with the FLDS, saying all the beliefs are the same, posting falsehoods, rumors, lies, etc. Anything you can imagine negative, they posted it. I did my best to set things straight in a non-argumentive way, posting sites, information, facts, statistics, etc...and still they argued. I didn't expect people to shout "Hallelujah" and run out and join the Church, but it would have been nice if at least one person would have said, "Oh, I was mistaken....", or "Oh, I didn't know that.." The hatred out there for the Church is frightening. Now I just need some kind words and reassurance. Quote
MaidservantX Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Welcome to the site, Pookies. I encourage you to go to the "Testimonies" portion of this website. There are some powerful first hand stories of people who actually are participating on this site. I personally have been changed and uplifted and reassured by many of these stories and testimonies. God bless. Stick around and participate! :) Quote
Palerider Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 welcome to the site....hope you have a good expierence here Quote
Flyonthewall Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Trying to set the record straight with those who are only interested in bashing, is an uphill battle. If you kept your cool through all that, then you came out on top. Quote
skalenfehl Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Welcome! There are great people here, worthwhile topics to discuss and many new things to learn about the gospel and each other. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. Quote
Guest Breezy Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 I'm not LDS, yet all the crap that gets spewed forth regarding you guys drives me completely insane. I can only imagine how it must seriously try the Saint's patience. Why the heck doesn't anyone ever show the protests that happen at Conference? Geez try something like that at a Baptist convention or the Methodists conference and the media would go into a frenzy. I get into trouble pretty often when I correct family or the husband when they spout something that is mistaken regarding the LDS. So I often find myself in the peculiar postition of defending a faith that isnt my own. When the media reports on events like Texas then I find myself having to explain why Mormons and Fundies cant be thought of as the same and how the FLDS got started ect.ect ad nauseum. Bless the LDS for their everloving tolerance for this stuff cuz I gotta tell ya these days I feel like smacking people upside the backs of their thick mormon bashing skulls. So much for me having the whole love thy neighbor thing huh? ( sorry for the rant I'm back to lurking now:)) Quote
ruthiechan Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Breezy your post gave me the warm fuzzies. Pookie, some people don't get it, period the end. Don't worry about them. There are people who will and it's for them that we rebuke falsehoods. Quote
Moksha Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Now I just need some kind words and reassurance. Let unkind words simple roll off you. Don't laugh at these words or react to them.Feel love instead. The Church does good things. Quote
WillowTheWhisp Posted April 17, 2008 Report Posted April 17, 2008 Some people just look for anything they can find to criticise about something they don't understand. Then even when they are told that they have the wrong end of the stick they refuse to accept the truth. It's pointless arguing with people who have already made up their mind not to listen to you. As Moksha says all you can do is love them. Tell them that when they are prepared to hear the truth you will be prepared to tell them, until then save your energy for something more worthwhile. :) Quote
Pookies Posted April 18, 2008 Author Report Posted April 18, 2008 Awww, Breezy, thanks for defending the church, even though you aren't a member. I wish everyone would make an effort, like you have, to understand the doctrines of the church, and not believe falsehoods. You are very kind. :) I'm not LDS, yet all the crap that gets spewed forth regarding you guys drives me completely insane. I can only imagine how it must seriously try the Saint's patience. Pookies Posted April 18, 2008 Author Report Posted April 18, 2008 Thanks, all, I do feel better now. I guess what really, really, upset me more than anything else was not that what they were saying wasn't true....it was that, even after I posted unbiased sites with correct information about whatever aspect they were bashing, they still bashed it...it was as if they either didn't care or didn't bother to read it...I just don't get people like that. I mean....they can still disagree with the concept...just disagree with the right one, you know what I mean? Quote
jjrogers Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 I think the thing to remember is that bashers don't care if it is true or not. They just want to hate and critisize. Nothing we say or do will ever change their minds. So we heed them not and have happy lives. Quote
Flyonthewall Posted April 21, 2008 Report Posted April 21, 2008 I takes a special type of person that can post on a board that is not freindly towards their belief. I have "lurked" at one site that is not freindly and down right abusive towards LDS beliefs, and the end result...I get snippy with those around me. So I have decided not to lurk there anymore, because I don't need to go out of my way to read things that upset me. It's not the disagreements that upset me, but the mindless contempt, condescensionand mockery used. Quote

I mean....they can still disagree with the concept...just disagree with the right one, you know what I mean? I know exactly what you mean - you can tell some people what we really believe and they will tell you that you are wrong and then proceed to tell you what they 'know' what you really believe and that you just don't realise it! I know that is the point where we really should walk away but it's hard to do isn't it when you know someone is misrepresenting your beliefs and way of life? Quote
