Polygamy in the celestial kingdom?
omega0401 replied to annamaureen's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I feel the same way. I think that both men and women who cannot accept polygamy and would be perfectly happy to be married to just one spouse will be permitted to do so. However, Heavenly Father may let them live as married with single spouses for now but I believe that a time will eventually come, in their eternal progression, that those same men and women will come to a better understanding of the purposes and the principles of polygamy that we in our finite wisdom do not yet understand. When their eyes are open and their understanding and wisdom are finally gained (for we learn line by line, precept upon precept) we then may realize what it is they truly are missing. It may just be a fullness of joy that we don't yet comprehend. I think we need not worry about this but to worry more about whether we are living ALL of the gospel and ALL our covenants or we won't even have one spouse!!! We should focus more on that than anything else. Let us work on perfecting ourselves and that will not be achieved in this life but we will be much closer to it. -
Polygamy in the celestial kingdom?
omega0401 replied to annamaureen's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I don't think Annamaureen should worry about polygamy in the Celestial kingdom. For one, the Lord is not going to have you do something that you are not happy about. However, I believe that in situations for members like Anna who loathe polygamy in any form, the time will come when you will change your thoughts and feelings once you come to a better understand of the principle and eternal purposes of polygamy and realize that it is truly a divinely inspired plan of our Heavenly Fathers. I know for some like Anna that may be hard to accept now with what limited knowledge we have so don't worry about that. In time, this principle will be better understood than what we know now. Hang in there! -
A blonde wanted to go ice fishing. She'd seen many books on the subject, and finally getting all the necessary tools together, she made for the ice. After positioning her comfy footstool, she started to make a circular cut in the ice.... Suddenly, from the sky, a voice boomed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" Startled, the blonde moved further down the ice, poured a cup of cappuccino from her thermos, and began to cut yet another hole. Again from the heavens the voice bellowed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" The blonde, now worried, moved away, clear down to the opposite end of the ice. She set up her stool once more and tried again to cut her hole. The voice came once more, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE!" She stopped, looked skyward and said, "IS THAT YOU LORD?" The voice replied, "NO, THIS IS THE MANAGER OF THE HOCKEY RINK!"

There's a charming story that Thomas Wheeler, CEO of the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, tells on himself. He and his wife were driving along an interstate highway when he noticed that their car was low on gas. Wheeler got off the highway at the next exit and soon found a run-down gas station with just one gas pump. He asked the lone attendant to fill the tank and check the oil, then went for a little walk around the station to stretch his legs. As he was returning to the car, he noticed that the attendant and his wife were engaged in a animated conversation. The conversation stopped as he paid the attendant. But as he was getting back into the car, he saw the attendant wave and heard him say, "It was great talking to you." As they drove out of the station, Wheeler asked his wife if she knew the man. She readily admitted she did. They had gone to high school together and had dated steadily for about a year. "Boy, were you lucky that I came along," bragged Wheeler. "If you had married him, you'd be the wife of a gas station attendant instead of the wife of a chief executive officer." "My dear," replied his wife, "if I had married him, he'd be the chief executive officer and you'd be the gas station attendant."

One day, four high school students decided to cut their morning classes. After lunch, they reported to their teacher that their car had had a flat tire. The teacher simply smiled and said, “Well, you missed the test this morning, so take your seats and get out your notebooks and take the test.” Still smiling, she waited for them to settle down. Then she said, “First question. Which tire was flat?”

obvious(?) epiphany about christ
omega0401 replied to bodhigirlsmiles's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
We are all at various levels and stages of learning. I hope you will keep on having a desire to learn. Knowledge and a testimony is one of the few things we take with us into eternity. So keep asking away and I'm sure someone here will have answers you are seeking and I hope you'll keeps visiting us here. -
obvious(?) epiphany about christ
omega0401 replied to bodhigirlsmiles's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
He did die for ALL of Heavenly Father's children. As a result ALL will be resurrected. It is a gift given to everyone. Even murderers and athiests will be resurrected. Eternal life is another matter and that requires faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior and redeemer, keeping all of his commandments and enduring to the end. -
HBO Recreates Portions of Temple Ceremony
omega0401 replied to lusciouschaos's topic in Current Events
In light of what HBO did regarding our sacred ceremonies being shown in public, here is another perspective. At General conference, in October 1984 Elder Bruce R. McConkie, of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said this… I have to love the way Elder McConkie expressed it. My brothers and sisters, let’s stay on that caravan and ignore the barking dogs at HBO! -
Nice ABC News Piece on HBO Big Love Controversy

Would you believe half a day? Seriously, I wish I could believe as easily as you do Wingnut. I don't believe opponents to Prop 8 will go away and leave this alone. Tom Hanks was an opponent. They will do all that they can to advance their agenda. Maybe you haven't heard of a web site that lists many people and organizations that have donated to Prop 8? It's there for a reason. The fact is, when Prop 8 passed Tom Hanks did insult the church and apologized for it a day or two later. I don't remember the exact words he used but it is a fact. That "may" be a good enough reason why he would produce this type of show. If there are any Tom Hanks fans out there...I apologize. -

I just remembered that Tom Hanks made some insult about our church when Prop 8 passed and he later apologized for. Isn't he also one of the producers of Big Love that just happens to be doing something disrespectful about our beliefs? Is this his pay back time? I've lost all respect for Tom Hanks. -

There is a rumor going around that what HBO is doing is probably pay back time for the church supporting Prop 8. Time will tell if this is true but I think the homosexual minority will not let this rest. Not only is our church being attacked for this support but the Catholic church is also being attacked in Massachusetts or it might be Connecticut. I've lost the article about it but some legislation regarding how Bishops control the church finances in that state. There is no evidence to support this but the timing is certainly interesting. -
Just as our son was learning to walk, my wife brought him to my office. He staggered around awhile, then dropped to his hands and knees and took off at top speed toward the office of the company president. We grabbed him at the doorway, but not before he was noticed by a co-worker. "You know," said the employee, turning to my wife, "his father goes into that office the very same way.

Good article Fern. Carbon-14 may not be the perfect method. It just goes to show we just don't have all the information yet even when some think we do. I think there's still so much we don't know yet about how the creation came about.
-
Mud slinging? This thread is about the creation right? Just kidding. It isn't my desire to go there either.
-
Really? Education and common sense should have told you how to find out if I was a Mormon. Since you didn't know, well I guess you don't have any. When you can add something more constructive than insults your posts will be worth reading.
-
Yes I am. True blue through and through. What point are you trying to make?
-
Fern, it makes logical sense but I'm not so sure that the earth has the same age requirements that people have. There is an obvious difference between the two. This age assumption may be right or it may be wrong. We don't seem to have enough knowledge to really know.
-
I don't believe the earth is billions of years old. I do believe that the materials from which God made the earth is billions of years old. It does not mean that the earth itself is billions of years old. I believe that it is possible that the earth can be thousands of years old since the time God used materials that were billions of years old.

I think we agree that Jesus is God the Savior and redeemer of mankind. At some point, your investigator will notice from the missionaries and church members at church that we pray to our Heavenly Father. So at some point they will bring the question up of who we should really pray to so I understand your leadership's counsel. Investigators will learn from example or they may question the missionaries about it. I do want to make it clear to whoever reads this thread that Mormons pray to our Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus Christ. We have never been taught to pray to Jesus, to the Holy Ghost, to a Saint or to anyone else for that matter. I agree with what you said. Did I miss the point? I think we’ve agreed that we do worship Christ as our Savior and redeemer. But remember the Jews were under the Mosaic law. In the Old Testament they were to worship Jehovah. When Christ came, he taught the Jews how to address their prayers when he said, “Our Father which art in heaven...: I believe this is significant or he would not have to correct or I should say to "change" the way they used to pray. I totally agree.

You are right but the following question and definition begs to be asked, “In what WAY then do we worship God the Father and God the Son?” I hope you don’t say we worship them the same. They each have their own purpose, after all, they are in a Godhead for a reason. God the Father is the Father of our spirits and we worship Him as such. You can’t worship the Savior that same way or that would be blasphemous. Regarding the reporter. I wished he had followed up his question with President Hinckley with, “If you worship Christ then do you pray to Christ?” I bet his answer would be NO because we worship them differently. LDS worship God the Son, but as I said in my last post, we worship Him as the Savior. We can’t do that with God the Father because He gave that responsibility to His Son. It was His Son that came down to earth to teach us and to atone and suffer for our sins and was crucified and resurrected that we also may overcome death and be resurrected. It wasn’t God the Father that did that. We worship the Savior in that respect. When I said we worship God the Father it was because we worship him as the Father of us all because He and He alone is the creator of our Spirits and that makes Him our Father. That was the definition of worship that I was thinking of but I did not make that distinction clear. Well hopefully these posts will help enlighten non members and a few LDS. I feel that it is good to discuss even the basic teachings of our faith. You’re not in my bonnet at all and it is a serious issue. In fact this has been a good discussion and I’m glad PC brought this question up. I think it will help and it has been an interesting thread. Let me throw out another question. Do Mormons believe in the Trinity? I would say almost. We do believe there are three separate physical persons and they are one God in the sense that they are a Godhead. But we worship each in a different way and we pray only to ONE God that is God the Father. There is a previous post of mine that I wanted to correct. When I wrote about the Trinity I was thinking about the teachings from the Nicene Creed that teaches that there is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, three personalities that are in one substance or being. Later I realized that is not what the Trinity is about. The Trinity believes they are three separate physical persons but worshipped as one God.
-
We believe that there are three Gods but we worship God the Father, one God. I think of the three as a Presidency, God the Father as the President, Jesus Christ as the First Counselor, and the Holy Ghost as the Second Counselor. All three make up the Godhead but it is God the Father whom we worship. The LDS do not worship Jesus Christ but believe Him to be the Son of God, the Messiah, the Redeemer, without whom we could never return to live with our Father in Heaven. We do as he has taught us to do in the scripture to pray unto the Father in His name. It is the Father that we worship. If you have found some LDS that worship Jesus Christ, it may be that they worship Him as the Son of God and the Savior of mankind but not as God the Father. We do not pray to Jesus but we pray to God in the name of Jesus Christ.

The doctrine of the Trinity is very difficult to understand when reading certain scriptures. Stephen, the first martyr of the early Church that we know of anyway, while he was being stoned said, “being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God , And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God ” (Acts 7:55-56). Yet people will read that and still believe that God, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost are still one being. I don’t believe that God wanted this doctrine to be this difficult to understand and I think this scripture (there are others) shows that. If God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are indeed one person why does the Bible confuse us further by having this scripture in there? The three are one in purpose and they represent the Godhood with our Heavenly Father as the one we worship but they are not one and the same person or physical being. I believe the scriptures are easier to understand the nature of God and the Godhead when thought of in this way.

After an accident, a woman stepped forward and prepared to help the victim. She was asked to step aside by a man who announced, "Step back please! I've had a course in First Aid." The woman watched his procedures for a few moments, then tapped him on the shoulder. "When you get to the part about calling the doctor," she said, "I'm already here."
