  1. There is a widow and 6 boys without a father who would probably disagree with you. It's offensive to me to imply that ministering to one person in the spirit world could be more important than being a husband and a father on this earth.
  2. I still don't see any specifics, while turning to God is a nice ideal it offers no practical solutions. God is not going to come down and fix our country. Beck repeatedly tells us what's wrong with our country but if he really wanted to do something about he would run for office, but I don't think he will.

    Doubts

I think this is a good attitude to have. I too struggle at times with past doctrines and practices and it can be difficult at times to reconcile and wrap your brain around. You may find that there may not 100% satisfactory answers to your questions and doubts, but doubt is as much a part of life as belief. I enjoy studying church history but I think if you want to be happy in the church you need to look at the church today and look forward. Good luck!
  4. Another local news article, though nothing much new. Redesigned Phoenix Temple will cover more of site
  5. Judging from this article, it looks like the neighbors still aren't pleased. New north Phoenix temple design still has critics
  6. The temple site is in my stake but I didn't go to the open house as it was intended for non-members in the area. I haven't heard yet any specific feed back, althought this article was in the paper the next day. Judging from the article it sounds like the results were mixed. I'm sure there will be those that won't be happy no matter what. Legally I don't know what recourse the residents would have if they still oppose it as the purpose of the redesign was to stay within the current zoning laws. 7. They're announced the new plans for the Phoenix temple. I actually like this one story design better than the two story one, it's not as tall and boxy and I think it will fit into the neighborhood better than the previous design. Hopefully the neghbors will like it better as well. Tonight there is a open house planned at the chapel on the same lot for the neighbors to come and see the plans and ask questions. 8. I'm currently reading Mormon Enigma and enjoying it, I second the recommendations for Rough Stone rolling. For more modern history, I would recommend: Amazon.com: David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism (9780874808223): Gregory A Prince, Wm Robert Wright: Books
  9. I wasn't joking. You asked a question and I answered it honestly. You should know by now that if you bring up Glenn Beck, no matter where or who the company is, LDS or non-LDS, you're going to get a wide variety of opinions about the man.
  10. There's a perfect example of this in the August Ensign under the visiting teaching message. It recounts the story of the women in Kirtland giving up their china to be ground down and mixed in with the plaster for the walls of the temple. August 2010 Turns out though this story has little basis in historical fact of the time.
  11. If I were in DC on that date I would be anywhere but the Lincoln Memorial. I would gladly visit the memorial before or after the event when I could enjoy it's quite and solemn beauty without Beck there to ruin the moment.
  12. The trib has an article about the funeral Mourners remember ousted LDS leader’s desire to help others | The Salt Lake Tribune The Deseret News reallly wimped out on this one, heaven forbid they publish any information about the man that might reflect negatively on the church, such as his excommunication and conviction of child molestation, even if it is the truth. We shouldn't shy away from the truth, even if it isn't "faith promoting". I was talking to a few guys at church and I asked them if they had heard he died, turns out none of them even knew who he was. I was surprised, I remember when he was a GA, it was a big deal that there was a native American GA. I remember when he was excommunicated, it was not long before I went on my mission.
  13. Unusual choice of hobbies, among that crowd I'd be happy to say I'm a philatelist.
  14. Why is this not appropriate? Next time you go to an endowment session listen carefully to what you covenant to not divulge outside of the temple, it's very narrow and specific and has absolutely nothing to do with garments. The moderators must not agree with you as this thread is still going strong. I think it's a good thing that people that get together on a forum and talk about things that are important to them. It's a uniquely Mormon experience to have a group of people talk to each other about their underwear.
  15. Special Garments Edit: Pam beat me to it, here's a link to the distribution services web site about special needs.
  16. I'd like to see a reference for that if you can find it. I did find this from President Hinckley:LDS.org - New Era Article - Words of the Prophet: Seek Learning A couple of excerpts: Seems to me he's saying that eventhough marriage and family have priority, an education is encouaraged whether you get married or not, even if it is for a "just in case" situations. The church teaches us and expects us to be self sufficient, I don't see why that wouldn't apply to women as well.
  17. My wife works from home too, there are times when she's not busy, but there are other times when she's working furiously to meet a deadline. Her visting teachers don't understand the concept of working from home. They insist on visting during the day, eventhough evenings would be better, they called several times to make an appointment during the day but my wife politely turned them down because she would be busy working. So the VTs ignored her wishes and showed up one morning unannounced, interrupting her work. I conside HT/VT an act of service, but it shouldn't create a hardship on the person being visited just so you can count your visit that month.
  18. Interesting site, I enjoyed it for the most part. Some things could have gone without mentioning though, like Google and digital books, those are relatively recent things that you don't have to go back very far to be without.
  19. Current temperature is 104 degrees, tomorrows predicted high is 110. You'd be a fool to fast from water in this environment for any amount of time.
  20. Um, I'm a man and I do all those things (except the flowers) so does that make me a woman? Am I acting like woman when I clean the bathroom? Am I acting like a woman when I bathe and dress my children? (we're past diapers thankfully, but I changed my fair share). My wife would strongly disagree, she thinks very highly of me when I help around the house. You didn't mention laundry, I do most of the laundry in my house, does that make me a woman too? The proclamation to the family defines divine rolls for men and women, but it also says they are "equal partners", it doesn't say a man can't be nurturing or a woman can't make a buck or two. It amazes me how many women (and men of course) in the LDS church try their hardest to keep sexism alive. I was in a welfare meeting this past Sunday and the ward mission leader said he visited a man in the ward who is less active, lives alone, recently widowed, and of poor health. The man's kitchen floor was very dirty and in need of cleaning but he couldn't do it himself due to his health. So in the meeting the mission leader turns to the RS president and asks if some ladies could go over and clean the man's floor. The RS president asked if the man had home teachers, the HPGL confirmed that he does and they visit regularly. The RS president was a little confused because with no woman in the home she really doesn't have any direct strewardship, so the mission leader suggest maybe some young women could go clean the floor. So I spoke up and said why can't the home teachers do it? If they don't know how to mop a floor then something's not right. The bishop thought about it a second then agreed and told the HPGL to inform the home teachers, I told the HPGL that if the home teachers needed any help I'd be happy to volunteer. It just drove me crazy that because man needed his floor cleaned the knee jerk reaction was to send a woman to do the job.
  21. True, but how the world perceives the church can either help or hinder missionary work and the growth of the church. The fact is that many outside (and even some in) the church perceive it as a patriarchal organization lead by old men. Men have the priesthood and women don't, and even the leadership positions available to women are limited, and they still ultimately answer to a man.
  22. That's only sort of true, church policy specifically forbids such a second ceremony, unless it's a simple "ring" ceremony, but a second wedding ceremony is not sanctioned by the church. The only exception is in countries where a civil wedding is required first, then they go to the temple afterwards.
  23. Anything is possible, I think women may receive the priesthood some day, what's continuing revelation for if not to bring about change? Today women perform priesthood ordnances in the temples (washing & anointing) and some women were ordained in the early days of the restored church. Women and Authority -- chapter 17
  24. Of course she felt like you were judging here, you just told her that what she was doing was wrong. I'm amazed that we worry so much about other people's underwear. We are so quick to judge people on how they are wearing their garments or if they are wearing them at all. How other people wear or don't wear their garments is of absolutely no concern to anyone but themselves. If you feel someone is not wearing it appropriately it's not your place to correct them, you should only worry about yourself.
  25. No. I'm going to get back to my Diet Coke now.
