btw, magic erasers are great for car interiors. When my ex and I bought a minivan a magic eraser was the only thing that got some stains off of the backseat from a toddler's safety seat. They were leather seats so I cleaned and conditioned all of them (a lot of work in a minivan) but it looked amazing afterward. The Magic eraser works great on scuff marks on plastic prior to armorall treatment too.

I would encourage anybody to become a member of the LDS church, but only when they truly believe the unique doctrines we hold dear. The Book of Mormon is a great first step, and as others have said, meeting with the missionaries will help you greatly with the rest. I would also recommend praying to Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, for help and guidance. As you begin to exercise your faith, the answers you seek will come to you through the Holy Ghost. May God be with you always

Being offended is a method to place yourself above others very quickly. It's main accomplishment is to establish an unequal relationship between two people/entities. How dare they say such things!! How dare they believe such things!! The other bad part about being offended is that it is rarely in connection with true beliefs, true intents, or truth in general. After all, people are offended that we believe we can become God, when we don't believe that at all. We simply believe that we can become as God is, as promised in the New Testament. People don't like to be wrong, so the quickest way to avoid that is to assume you're right no matter what, and take offense at anyone that disagrees with you. A very insecure way to live btw.

When is respect due and when is respect earned?
RipplecutBuddha replied to Bini's topic in General Discussion
I think it can be separated, but very carefully. I can treat people respectfully and even love them, but I don't have any requirement to respect their actions/decisions. There could be some random celebrity that I could totally treat kindly and be friendly to them. However I don't need to respect them if I feel their actions/comments are contrary to what I believe is just and true. In that manner, respect could become associated with trust or agreement. -
What kind of music does everyone listen to?
RipplecutBuddha replied to Rapidmc's topic in General Discussion
A quick get-together group called Liquid Tension Experiment has been playing in my place the past few days. They made two good albums worth checking out, and a third that may only appeal to the most intense music geek. Very closely related is my favorite current group Dream Theater. Progressive rock/metal. Longer songs, insanely gifted musicians, and music that keeps revealing itself to you a little at a time after each listen. Think of them as a mash-up of Metallica, Rush, Pink Floyd, and Yes. Odd combo for sure, but I've been into them for years now. -
Who do you vote has the best username?

I vote for my name due to the randomness quality. Also because my first option of Tide_Hiccups just didn't seem very workable.... -
When is respect due and when is respect earned?
RipplecutBuddha replied to Bini's topic in General Discussion
Just to clarify, I always try to treat people respectfully, but that's not the same thing as respecting them. -
There was the girl I dated in college that told me her full life story, I mean from her first memory to the day before we met.....in a three hour period. Yeah...

When is respect due and when is respect earned?
RipplecutBuddha replied to Bini's topic in General Discussion
I'm respectful to people until they do something that demeans themselves, myself, friends, or family. Up to that point, respect is given freely. After that point, respect must be earned back. -
unfortunately, until there are some exactly translated place names that match the Book of Mormon, nobody will consider much of this as relevant. I agree it is fascinating, but because there are no directly matching locations with matching place names, and because the face of the land was changed dramatically at the time of Christ's death, at this point it is all but impossible to be confident of even these findings. Don't get me wrong, he could actually be 100% right on. The fact is we don't know enough to be sure right now. I'm with the others, the real proof of the Book of Mormon lies where it has always been found, personal sincere prayer to Heavenly Father. When the Holy Ghost confirms it to you, there are no questions, you know it.

When I am asked, I simply say 'I don't drink. I never have." If they press further I then explain "I'm a Mormon. I don't drink." Usually that's sufficient. I don't get snotty about it. I simply state it as though I were saying "I'm left handed." (which I am). It's no big deal to me, the fact that others drink and I don't. So I don't act like it is. There's no need for it to be a big deal, nor for it to become a big deal. As long as I keep it played down, 90% of the time that's the end of the discussion, and everyone's fine. (for the 10% that doesn't go well, I keep calm and let the other guy/gal bury themselves in their own intolerance)

I went through a similar process, but at the same time, I discussed everything that happened during my absence from church activity. My reasoning was like this; At the very least the Bishop will have some background on you he'd otherwise lack. This means he'll be better equipped to help you remain active and continue to grow in faith. If the issues of your past are resolved, they're resolved, and the bishop will be happy to leave them there. However, there are some things he ought to know about, especially if it involves an addiction of some kind. This is the most common thing that requires ongoing support regardless of whether it's drugs, acohol, pornography, etc. Addictions are tough to beat, let alone tough to beat by yourself. The bishop can tell you when local addiciton recovery meetings are held, if necessary. The truth is that the Bishop is a judge in Israel and in order to claim the full blessings God wants you to have, the Bishop has to know where you stand. It's not that you need to repent to him, rather you need to report to him of your repentance to God. Finally it sounds like you're on good solid ground again, and congradulations on coming back.

The oldest question and how to deal
RipplecutBuddha replied to Backroads's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I have found that the true humble seekers of truth tend to come to us on their own ready to hear what we say and give faith a try. Any time I come across religious debate I generally don't give it the time of day, as there are very rarely any open hearts involved on either side. It's just not worth the time and energy. Regarding temple truths, whenever a non-member asks me what it's all about I tell them "Join the church when you believe it's true, then come talk to me a year later. I'll discuss some of it with you then." I will sometimes go so far as to explain that everything in the temple centers around Christ and his Atonement for us in some manner, but only when the discussion is respectful in tone, and I won't usually venture more than that. I just find it best that way. -
Only if the company were publicly owned would this become a moral and even a legal issue. (ah, the other shoe lands against the attack on big public-owned business being evil, but that's another discussion). As long as all the legal obligations regarding corporate profits have been addressed (payroll, taxes, etc.), all remaining funds can be used as the owner sees fit. At the end of the day, he runs his busniess affairs legally, and eagerly so. What he choses to do with the money he has earned is just as it ever was with whoever earned money for their labor. It's his business how it is spent and nobody else's. I understand they're upset that someone dares to disagree with them, but eventually they'll either accept it, let it go, or simmer in miserable hatred the rest of their days. No matter what, being offended is a choice.

Here's what I think. The owner of Chick-Fil-A was asked a question about his personal opinion/belief. He answered the question honestly. His answer flies in the face of what is currently deemed to be acceptable, and has thus been called hateful, intolerat, etc. However, neither the question nor the answer have any connection to how he manages his business. Go to any of the restaraunts and you'll see it's true. They serve customers that come into the store, just like any other business. Saying you want to boycott Chick-Fil-A because the owner thinks marriage is between man and woman only is like wanting to boycott Sears because the name starts and ends with the same letter.

I worked at a grocery store as a cashier at 18. Legally I could not sell alcohol to people though they could bring it into my register. Whenever that happened, an assistant manager (shift supervisor) would perform the act of ringing up the alcohol, then let me finish ringing up the order. We had a separate liquor store with its own register, but hey, all items could be checked out through any register. I have no clue why this option was not used in such a case as the OP. The clerk in question could have rung up the items allowed by Ramadan, then have someone else (not muslim) ring up the remaining items. I agree this was abhorrent customer service and a waste of employer's money.

Christian Bale: Not just a hero on the screen
RipplecutBuddha replied to RipplecutBuddha's topic in Current Events
Okay, I'm going to re-state my case very carefully. You seem intent to point out that the only reason this nutball did what he did was because of the Dark Knight series. You seem intent to state that it was the movies and the movies alone that was the trigger to his actions. You seem further intent to state that Christian Bale is somehow liable for the actions of a severely disturbed individual. You seem to disparage Christian Bale for a heartfelt expresson of shock and sorrow for what occured and a desire to lift the heavy hearts and heal deep spiritual wounds. Please allow me to point out some items. 2 Nephi 2:26 26 And the Messiah cometh in the fulness of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the fall. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given. D&C 29:39 39 And it must needs be that the devil should tempt the children of men, or they could not be agents unto themselves; for if they never should have bitter they could not know the sweet— Now, I understand your position on violence in our culture, and largely I agree with you. However, you seem to be attempting to lay this atrocity at Christian Bale's feet when you and I both know that's not how accountability works. That's not how the Gospel works. According to your rationale, I could go kidnap a busload of tourists on your birthday and run it off a cliff screaming the whole time "I'm Rameumpton!!!! I'm Rameumptom!!!!" And magically, you'd have to change your screen name and feel guilty and sorrowful the rest of your days for something utterly disconnected to you. We both know that's not right. -
Christian Bale: Not just a hero on the screen
RipplecutBuddha replied to RipplecutBuddha's topic in Current Events
Okay, so now that we're into hair-splitting, do you honestly think Mr. Bale had anything to do with the screenplay, it's writing or interpretation?? He was merely the physical representation of a fantasy situation based on a comic book. Nothing that the killer did (except trying to look like the Joker) resembles any part of the Dark Knight series, and in that exception he followed Heath Ledger rather than Christian Bale. Yet somehow Mr Bale is still guilty by association?? The only connection I would allow in my logic is that Mr. Bale is part of the great hollywood machine that has no fear of using violence and death to attract the allmighty dollar. Keep in mind he and his wife (yep gals, Christian Bale is married) went to Denver on their own initiative, as quietly as possible. Even the film's studio went out of their way to state that his visit in no way represented the studio. That alone may or may not tell you where you could place your mistrust rather than continue to hold the sword of public injustice over the neck of a man who was compelled to do the right thing in the midst of an awful tragedy. What about the camera crews that filmed the movie? Are they just as guilty? How about the director, or maybe the catering crew that was on location for the filming? I know, let's try blaming this awful tragedy on the dipweed that actually had the weapons in his hands, and realize that if it weren't for the Batman movies, he'd have likely found another source of inspiration for his idiocy, and it may or may not have had anything to do with Hollywood. Madness has existed for a far longer time than Hollywood, and countless people have died throughout time at the hands of such maniacs. Blame it on deep mental issues that nobody caught in time, and realize that when Judgement Day occurs, I highly doubt Christ will ask Christian Bale anything about it. -
Need help finding part in scriptures...
RipplecutBuddha replied to apricots's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
And here I thought I'd be able to suggest Nephi or Sam, both good parts for a man, unless you're looking to play the heel, as it were. For that there's Laban of course, but that's just a bit-part really since it ends very early on with no real development in it..... -
