Of course God is limited. He cannot commit blasphemy. All-powerful is,thus, a relative term. Certainly God posesses the ability to sin. If he did not posess the gift of agency, would he be able to extend it to others such as his children? Logic says no, that no being can share that which it does not posess first. Having said that, were God to actually choose to sin in any way, he would lose the power and glory he posesses as a perfect being, thus he can accurately be said to be 'incapable of sin'. In another respect, there is no desire in him to sin, as he has omnipotence to reveal to him the consequences of any sinful choice he could make. Such knowlege further prevents God from making a sinful decision. Thus the real discussion of 'I cannot believe in a God that does (insert objectionable action/position here)' is one that would more accurately be that of our understanding of true perfection, justice, mercy, love, and all other attributes that the Bible lists as those posessed by God. After all, if we truly believe in a God that is perfect in every possible respect, then any objections we would have to what he says/does would then be easily marked down to our limited understanding of the eternal principles involved, and the requisite gaps in knowledge and information associated with it. Unrelated to the discussion, but it's what popped into my head when I read the thread title.

It's moments like these that make me seriously question how committed I am to wanting children. The world has changed so much just in my less-than-forty years, people from either time would barely recognize the other, and it's not trending better in many areas. My other thought is that Heavenly Father knew about all this from the start, and whatever worse things we've yet to realize. Just makes me stop and ponder.

Gospel of Jesus Christ - Easy or hard

Not easy as in effortless to accomplish, but easy as in simple, far less of a mental burden than the Law of Moses was. -

The Pressing Argument: How Do We Wear Our CTR Rings?

You could just tell her they are sections of mechanically pressed and formed sheets of wood pulp bleached white for better contrast against the black ink that is printed on them which require her signature to maximize their full authoritative nature.... -
I liked it a lot, but I had to see it in 3-D because that's when I had time to go to the show.. I wish I had just seen it in 2-D. There were many scenes that were just too blurry in 3-D. enough of them and I'd have gotten sick. Besides that it was an excellent show. great writing, great action, great acting....I'm buying the dvd...

odd, since he clearly stated that he didn't meet the reporting requirement...yet the charges were dropped anyway, meaning there's no case. Of all the people involved in the incident, the bishop was the last one to be informed of any impropriety. Prior to his introduction to the matter, both parents were aware of the situation, and both parents had notified law enforcement officials. According to the father of the young woman, who was unsure if she was being truthful, the only reason the bishop was notified at all was to see if he (the bishop) could tell if the young woman was being honest or not. Now, to my ears, this seems like a young woman either overreacting to a sophmoric act by a young man, or a young woman snapping after several sophmoric acts by a young man. In either case, I doubt something as serious as, say statutory rape occured, but that's just me. Given, then, that the bishop was the last one to be involved, it makes all kinds of sense that he didn't call the hotline, nor law enforcement. As I said earlier in my post, given the facts of the case that we now know, his actions seem far more reasonable. Also keep in mind WE DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE YOUNG MAN DID. So, even at this point, I hesitate to pass judgement of any kind. you're the bishop, and here's the situation Boy does thing/act to girl girl tells mom, mom calls police girl tells dad, dad calls police five other people are told about the event dad can't tell if girl is being honest dad calls bishop bishop meets with girl bishop hears what girl says boy did to her bishop knows both parents are aware of event bishop knows law enforcement has already been notified *strong possibility that offensive act was not a serious sex crime, but more like an inappropirate prank/joke that went way too far.* Bishop gives advice to not call police and to try to forgive boy and move on. The *...* part indicates what we don't know. The rest I gathered from the reports in this thread. It doesn't seem too out of place *If my guess at the actual act is accurate*. Since we'll likely never know what the actual event was that caused all this, we can't really conclude anything. What we know, however, is that the prosecutors dropped all charges despite the bishop admitting he should have handled it better. and after all this....what has changed? A lot of people jumped the gun big time on this by criticizing the bishop from the start without even a fraction of the facts needed to make sense of what really happened. -The bishop wasn't charged with anything -The young man doesn't seem to have been charged with anything -The bishop is still a bishop What I gather from all this is that too many people here got all wound up before they knew anything of the facts, which is what Vort's point was from the first post of this event. Yes the bishop could have called the hotline, but he didn't....big deal...charges were dropped...move on.
-
True, but that wasn't Vort's point. His point was that people were being far too judgemental with so little information available. In that respect, he was spot-on from the start of this case.

I wonder how many people followed this case. I wonder how many of them wanted the bishop to be drummed out of his position, if not out of the church itself, because of the initial news reports. Let me explain it this way; When a case is still open, or under investigation, it is standard behavior for law enforcement officials to withhold significant amounts of information from the public. It protects the investigation itself, and in the case of when charges are filed, it helps keep the court proceedings on a more neutral basis. So, how many people were thinking what I was thinking...that the bishop was the first to hear about these allegations, only to find out after the fact that the truth all along was that he was really the last one involved to hear anything at all. The parents had already called the police and reported it....if I were the seventh person to hear the story, and I knew law enforcement had already been notified, and her father asked me to talk with her only because he wasn't convinced that she was being honest, would I seriously think about calling the cops as well? Would I have told the young woman to call the cops herself? I have to say I doubt it, were I in his shoes. I understand there is a great need to protect our children, but remember we were kids too, and I'm sure more than one of us did our share of lying to our parents. Most likely not on this level of legal severity, but the truth remains, and Vort was right all along. We never were in posession of all the facts in order to make a safe judgement, yet how many of us did so anyway? Even now we don't know what the specific allegation was. Most of the time it's best to let the situation play out and see what goes on from there. It's just too bad we aren't always patient enough to do so.

Why is Faith the 1st principle?
RipplecutBuddha replied to cryophil's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I would also suggest reading a short book titled "Lectures on Faith". I think it will explain the importance faith plays in our lives (and the importanct faith plays in religion specifically) far better than can be done here. Be prepared for deep thought though because the book gets deep very quickly. My favorite part is where the fact is pointed out that faith is the basic motivating element of all human action. To use examples similar to the text itself, what person would bother eating if they had no faith that by so doing their hunger would be abated? What man would embark upon a massive engineering project if he didn't have faith in his own designs or the ability of others to build what he had designed? Would you go to work if you didn't have faith in getting paid for your time? Faith is merely acting on a belief based upon facts that are, as yet, unproven. The truth of the matter is, everything we do is based upon faith in some way. Even begining this discussion has required your faith that it would be an educational exchange of ideas. So if faith can be demonstrated to be so essential to everyday human existence, what then could its importance be in our religious endeavours, if not the very first essential ingredient to any activity directly connected to them? If you have no faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, what would be the purpose of pursuing any further religious growth? On the other hand, if you DO have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, what is to prevent you from seeking any and all religious growth you can experience through his Gospel? -

I got a better one, saw it live at the Boston Pops Orchestra, enjoy. The Stradivarius violin is of course one of the most treasured in the world. The sounds that come from these legendary hand-crafted instruments are revered by musical enthusiasts around the world. Sadly, examples have been more and more rare to find, and some of them have not weathered the test of time very well. One example is that the piece of wood at the end of the neck that holds the tuning pegs can have a large effect on the sound of the instrument. The name of that piece is called the scroll, due to its curled shape on classically designed violins. Some Stradivarius violins have been found with damaged scrolls. The result is that the instrument cannot be tuned properly, and can even render the instrument unplayable. Recently, however, one of the oldest violin makers still producing hand-crafted violins has begun making replacement parts for the Stradivarius, and replacement scrolls have been made as part of this effort. The process has been very painstakinly slow due to the need for exactly the right wood from the best part of the tree. Every effort has been made to replicate these parts as best as possible. However there has been a problem. With five known Stradivarius violins having had their scrolls replaced, there has been a noted efffect. In almost every way, the new scrolls have been perfect, with one exception. For some unknown reason, whenever a natural C is played, the tone of the instrument completely changes and the note comes out dull and somewhat weak. It took a large amount of detective work to isolate the scroll as the culprit, as well as a great deal of time. As a result the replacement parts have recieved notoriety for the dull sound they have caused. Already they're being called "The Dead C Scrolls".

New Study: 1 in 10 Marriages are Interracial
RipplecutBuddha replied to HoosierGuy's topic in General Discussion
Let me say it this way; God sees no difference, therefore I ought not see it either. -
I like the thought. It places repentance in its proper spot as a tool to accomplish the goal, rather than allow it to be seen as a possible obstacle to happiness, which was never the intent. It also emphasises the life-long process that approaching our Savior needs to be. Thanks for the message.

New Study: 1 in 10 Marriages are Interracial
RipplecutBuddha replied to HoosierGuy's topic in General Discussion
probably the idea that we're all of one human race, and that skin tone differences are just that, not anything indicative of something that would warrant breaking humanity down into different racial components. I happen to agree with this particular world view, but until we get there, we will see many more horrible things done/said because of our differences rather good things done/said because of our common ground. -

When I said God commands polygamy, perhaps I should have been more clear by saying "It is generally understood that God has allowed and even commanded polygamy in the past, while at other times specifically forbidding it." I had assumed most of us here understood that and I was wrong to do so. My apologies. -

My younger brother and his wife have a BMW wagon. It's a great car, and he loves the power for sure, but he's one of the best drivers I know, along with his wife. However, I was in San Diego when the BMW Z3 was big...I'll concede the point with the higher-end BMW's on that basis alone. Just remember, there are always exceptions
