    Bishop

Hello all, Reading many threads on this site, I often come across "Talk to your bishop." My question is how does someone become a bishop in the LDS church? Why are people often told to consult with them? What special talents/resources, etc. do they have that others might not have? I know each person is different and therefore this answer will be individual to your experience with your bishop but what have you noticed or believe about your own bishop? Do you believe that they always give the right advice? Do you think they are more knowledgeable than others in your ward? What else can you tell me about the bishop? I've met a bishop when I lived in Salt Lake. He was not as knowledgeable about his church or the LDS doctrine as his wife. Was that a rare thing or is that common? Thanks for your ideas, Dr. T
  2. Hello all, This is sort of long (and probably boring) but I was doing some reading on the concept of God's omniscience and thought I'd share with you. Omniscience On the most superficial level, this means that God knows/has knowledge perfectly, eternally, etc. all that is or can be known (both possible & actual knowledge)—past, present & future. Though the word is not used in scripture (omniscience or omniscient) it is clearly portrayed or communicated in passages describing the length/breadth/depth of God’s knowledge, revealing that he “sees”, “hears”, and “knows” all things/nothing is hidden from him, etc. Or (1). Or For any person S, S is omniscient, defined: For all propositions p, if p (is true) and p is (logically) knowable to S, then S knows that p (is true)

  5. Sorry only have white. gimmie back my gnome and we can talk.
  6. Never mind just_jason76. Sorry for not being clear.
  7. That an interesting idea Capin. I do not see why that criterion (for the most part) cannot be part of a normal conversation. What is the inconvenience of a discussion going on for a long time? Also, you seem to say that you plan on attacking/anticipating what the opponent would say and then go from there. Yet you talk about “We no longer seek enlightenment and wisdom and growth…” Is not this type of discussion that we are proposing toward that end? If we only prepare to “defeat” someone, etc., how is that accomplishing what you hold so dearly? Thanks
  8. Hi just_jason76, No sir. I just said "apparent contradiction". But for arguments sake, are you familiar with any prophecies when juxtaposed, advocate for separate action? Now I'm talking about an old LDS prophet and a new LDS prophet? If so, how do you reconcile that? Thanks
  9. Thanks for the link Jason
  10. Hello Ray, Maybe things could be clearer for me if you define what you mean by species. Thank you
  11. Hey Ray, I'm guessing that you've been asked this but I'm interested in your response. Would Hitler (hypothetically), after repenting from all his misdeeds be saved or not? Thanks for your ideas.
  12. From my experience, there is also a color thing amongst Latino subgroups. Darker the skin the more prejudice. I know that is a generality. I'm only speaking from experience. Dr. T
  13. Thank you Shan. That helps.
  14. So, normal discussion while taking different views would not be of use? It has to be in a format like that? Why?
  15. Man I'm getting slower and slower!!! I know see your point.
  16. Clear as mud to me
  17. Hi CT, So you would not be interested in the discussion or debate that does not have a judge? Just wondering.
  18. Hi Ray, I'll try quoting it from your last post to find out. That is a great idea. As far as blasphemy of the H.S. is concerned it is not connected to murder sir. It has to do with speaking against, (attributing the Holy Spirits' work to Satan) the Holy Spirit." If you’d like, reread the context in the Bible. Thanks
  19. Hey Fiannan, He wouldn't have to be a neuropsych to evaluate the data. I hear what you are getting at and I think "what if Michael Jordan was a child molester? Would I say his basketball prowess is bunk?"
  20. Hello Martie, I'm sorry that you are in this situation. I do not want to add to your stress so please understand taht I am not saying that this is happening in your situation. I do know that this type of "addiction" often progresses to prostitution use. I only bring this up to make sure that you consider the possible dangers and talk to him directly about it. Just my two cents
  21. Hello Ray, Here is what God says about it: Mat 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy [against] the [Holy] Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. Ray, will you please educate me on how to post something like you did? You wrote a D&C link and also did it when you said, "here." How do you do that? Thank you
  22. Milk or Dark?
  23. Me too Palerider. That is a true statement
  24. Hey CT, If you want to debate an athiest, try infidel.org.
  25. Hello all, Ray, I believe that murder is forgivable/pardonable. An example is when the soldiers crucified Jesus. What did Jesus say to the Father? AK is correct. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the unpardonable sin. I also agree with you Ray. It only takes one sin to not be saved. Thank God for Jesus’ life, death and resurrection! Jesus wipes away all past, present, and future sin. I agree with you also in repentance, conforming your life to the life of Christ and I disagree with you that if someone doesn’t repent of a sin, he will not be in heaven. What of those people who die before then repent of a lustful thought? Just curious Ray, how many times a day do you repent of sins you commit? Thanks
