    Kids

the mom's who don't work in my ward get together every Wednesday from 10-12 for a playdate. We were doing it in someone's backyard during the summer, but when it got cold, we got permission to do it at the church. We just go in the nursery or the gym. The kids love playing together and with all the toys, and the moms get to visit. Works out great. I would suggest looking into something like that if you have a lot of young kids in your ward like I do.
  2. My Grandmother was Catholic, until a Catholic priest announced to the congregation that a baby who had died recently in the neighborhood would be going to hell, because he was never baptised. She couldn't see how God would allow an innocent baby to go to hell, especially considering that the baby had no choice whether he was baptised or not. My Grandmother converted to Mormonism several years later.
  3. I think what he is asking is what questions Lindy had and what answers she found in the LDS church. For example, she may have been wondering, "Where did we come from?" And the LDS answer made the most sense to her. I don't think he is saying he has any specific questions, but just wondered what questions others might have, and what answers they have found.
  4. she has about 5 banned accounts, all banned as a result of spamming me and all the other moderators to be a moderator. i believe she has made a total of 2 legitimate posts on this site in her life time.
  5. I never had a problem with this first post of letting others know about a new site. However, I draw the line when poor internet etiquette is shown. I'm sure what Lindy is taking about is multiple personalities in the chat room saying how ldscity was a better, everyone was over there, and to leave this site. As far as I remember, Sugarbay merely told others about the site, but there were some other members from ldscity who were purely recruiting. After I talked to Sugarbay about it, and sent her a list of proper chat room etiquette, I haven't received any more complaints from the chatters on this site. I actually have only been over there a few times to see how popular the chat room was, after reading all of the recruiting statements. I always just saw one person and a bot.

    Spanking

I was wondering if anyone had come across an article or anything from someone with an advance degree in child psychology or child development where they have stated that "spanking is okay." I have a friend who says that he will spank his children, because it worked for him. To me, furthering the pattern of corporal punishment with the reasoning of, "I was spanked and I'm okay," isn't a good enough reason to me. I was spanked, and it did not work for me. I have read a dozen different books since I became a parent, just so that I wouldn’t continue the patterns that I didn’t like in my childhood. My friend and his wife have also spanked their young nephew while in their care. He wasn’t more than 2. Because of this, I'm very leery about leaving my son with him and his wife. Doesn't matter what I say or evidence I show him, he doesn't agree. I feel like, "hey do what you want with your own kids, but if you touch mine, I'll be calling the authorities."
  7. You could get that injury anytime you play any sport, anywhere. When I played basketball for school teams, we had to sign off about risks, which included death.
  8. That's what I think too. Unless there was a large interest or several topics, such as those who post in the advice forum, I'm not sure if it would be that popular.
  9. Have you met some of these people? I would tend to agree that they do as well.
  10. A new member of the board emailed me about the possibility of creating a forum to discuss public issues, such as politics and political leaders. Previously this type of subject has found it's way in the general forum, but I wouldn't mind creating a separate area if there is a large enough interest. Excerpts from the email:
  11. I always thought it was interesting that JW would come to my door. Why would they want to convert anyone and lower their chances of they themselves being one of the 144,000 who go to heaven? I remember them coming around when I was around 15 or so and telling me that it was okay to drink wine. All in all they seemed pretty friendly and weren't pushy.

    Spanking

There was a scripture that kept popping into my head, but I had to ask my dad about it because I couldn't find it, as I had remembered the wrong wording. It's Matt. 18:6. In looking it up, I also came across this message from President Hinckley “Behold Your Little Ones,” Ensign, June 2001. I will include the portion that really stood out to me as an expression of why I will discipline and teach my children the way I have stated previously. I too had friends who were given "the belt" anytime they were out of line, and it caused me to fear their fathers. I never want my children to be afraid of me or their father. I want them to be able to come to me when it comes to anything, and not worry that I’m going to punish them out of my own anger. I know there are several other sources they could turn to if they don’t feel 100% comfortable with me, and that’s something I’m not willing to give up. I'm not a perfect person, and I can't bring myself to feel anything but loathing for some who dare to hurt a child.
  13. find a contact to buy apple ipods while you're there
  14. I dunno, you could have quite a few more. I came up with 117 popular US names that fit that criteria, and 2632 names from the all name search. (This does include multiple instances of "L" in the name though. Here is the first page from the US names Abril Alden Alice Alize Alvin Angel April Ashly Aylin Belen Caleb Carla Carli Carlo Carly Carol Cayla Celia Chloe Clara Colby Colin Dulce Dylan Dylon Elise Elmer Elvin Elvis Elyse Felix Fidel Haley Halie Hazel Helen Itzel Jalen Jalyn Jamal http://baby-names.yeahbaby.com/
  15. There's a link to firefox at the top of the thread. Not sure what it could be, because I can get into it just fine with IE and firefox. What version of IE are you using?

    Spanking

I found a pdf file off of the love and logic website about spanking that might interest some of you. I don't think it helps anyone to say, "Spanking is wrong," but then give no alternative, because it's quite simple to see that yes it can work. My belief is that spanking can work, but there are other methods which have been proven to be even more effective. I would be very interested (being a parent myself) to see if the love and logic methods are more effective in parenting rather than spanking. I would love to run a mini-case study through this thread to see if another method is more effective than spanking or if spanking still brings about the best results. (But I also know that I don't like anyone telling me how to parent, and I don't want to come across that way either. This is completely on a volunteer / mutual-curiosity basis.) http://www.loveandlogic.com/pdfs/0401tvarticle.pdf - Look at the second page specifically, titled "Practice Alternatives to Spanking" The first two paragraphs really jumped out at me in regards to PC's stance on spanking. I think he is a good and loving parent, who probably has wonderful children who sometimes push the limits, just like every other child.
  17. I'm going to send them an email about it. Sorry about that PC. Does it give the same error in both microsoft IE and firefox?

    Spanking

I believe everyone should have the right to parent how they choose, within reason and the law of course. I think too often these days I'm seeing parents who don't parent at all. I was at the store and a 8 year old boy climbed a rack of magazines and it fell down on him. The parents, so concerned about his injuries, wanted a camera to document it all. (Or rather saw the dollar signs in their own neglect.) If they were so concerned about his well-being, why were they letting him wander around a busy store while they were 2 aisles away? The irony these days though is that spanking can lead to the spanker going to jail for child abuse. And not for being abusive, per say, but because it seems to me that society as a whole is moving away from corporal punishment all together, and those engaging in it still are being frowned upon. Spank a child = he gets mad at you = tells his friends = they tell him to call the cops, and he'll never get spanked again.
  21. eating in the middle of a median sounds dangerous to me. I have done a picnic and a movie on top of a roof before though.

    Spanking

I grew up being spanked, and I know all it did was cause me to be afraid of my dad and I would lie/hide things from him. When I did something wrong, I would resent him for the punishment, instead of blaming myself for my actions. I think if you use corporal punishment with a child who is being violent, it sends the message that hitting is okay. I also think that when you're angry, you can take spanking too far if you do it in the moment.
  23. My take is that even if you use the very best preservation methods, photos and paper are not going to last, or look as good as the first day you do them. Plus if I were to scrapbook, or even do a special book like heritage makers, it will be impossible for everyone to have their own copy of it (scrapbook) or get really expensive (heritage makers). But DVDs will last forever, because you can copy them, and the information on them will stay just as good as the first DVD. Plus it's really cheap to make a copy for everyone. I sold my still camera awhile ago, and now I only use digital. I'm in the process of scanning all of my family photos in as well. I've finally decided I'm also going to be selling all of my scrapbook stuff on eBay over the next few weeks. ($1000s worth. Yikes!) I do like the idea of the heritage maker books. I think they turn out really neat. The problem with me and scrapbooking is I spent so much time at it (such a perfectionist). I turned out an hour long DVD of all of my son's photos from the first year, complete with music and commentary from me and my husband, in the same amount of time it was taking me to do 2 scrapbook spreads. Now I know when he gets married, and he wants the DVD, it’s not going to be a big deal to burn him his own copy.
  24. Yeah I could see that happening. There was a guy I went to school with who was so amazing on the piano, and he couldn't read music either. What is the piano method that teaches you to play by ear? Starts with an "S" I think. It seems it's becoming more popular around here.

    Spanking

I'm a huge fan of love and logic. I never want to spank our kids. This is the points from Jim Fay (Love and Logic writer)
