  1. Yep. Either they take it out of context because they actually think their opinion is correct or just to get others to dislike the church.
  2. Could lead codices prove ‘the major discovery of Christian history’? - Yahoo! News These date back to 1st century. They were found near Jordan. While they have no ties to the Book of Mormon, it is important to notice the objects used to write on were plates which is just more proof of people in ancient times of writing sacred texts on plates.
  3. 2 Nephi 5:20 Wherefore, the word of the Lord was fulfilled which he spake unto me, saying that: Inasmuch as they will not hearken unto thy words they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. And behold, they were cut off from his presence. 21 And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them. 22 And thus saith the Lord God: I will cause that they shall be loathsome unto thy people, save they shall repent of their iniquities. The skins were turned dark but that was not the curse. This is similar to Cain's curse. Cain was cursed and given a mark so people would know who he is. However, the mark wasn't the curse. The curse was being cut off from our Lord our God. The same applies to 2 Nephi 5:20-22 with the Lamanites. Read verse 20. That tells what the curse is. The Lamanites were cut off from the Lord our God; that was the curse. The dark skin was their mark just as Cain was marked. Verse 22 helps as well. "Save they shall repent of their iniquities." They were cursed because they sinned repeatedly with no sign of wanting to repent so they were cursed by being cut off from our Lord our God and the mark was the dark skin.
  4. Ok. So it's the same as the phrase "our Lord our God".
  5. We know the scriptures refer to Jesus Christ as "our Lord our God" so it's common to think this is referring to Christ. However, after stumbling upon Matthew 11:25 I'm not entirely sure. 25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. In Matthew 11:25, Jesus Christ actually acknowledges God the Father as Lord of heaven and earth. So when the scriptures say "Lord God" is it referring to Jesus Christ our Lord our God or God the Father, Lord of heaven and earth?
  6. Nope. Quite honestly it's just how close the words are that got me to ask.
  7. Are there any connections between the ancient Qumran community and the Quran of the Islamic faith? I didn't think about how close these two words are until today. Just a one letter difference.
  8. It doesn't say the word "Americas" but it is talking about it in regards to the promised land just as there are verses in the Bible that point to the Americas. My favorite find is that of Nahom.
  9. Scholars have said the gospels weren't written by the apostles themselves and going by how they read it makes sense. We had a discussion in my NT class the other day and the instructor asked us to give our theories on why the 4 Gospels contain different things. Mine was this: it could have to do with the apostles scattering and teaching the gospel. People that heard the apostles teach could have written down what they taught. Some of the scribes might have written down things they felt was most important such as Matthew containing the birth of Christ while not all the gospels have this. In fact, the book of Mark was written before Matthew. Something else I see is Mark 5:7 7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. Could the bold "most high God" have something to do with our belief of exaltation? Read those words and think about them carefully.
  10. To clear this up, in regards to "about what they teach" I was referring to the different events, not the actual teaching. We all know they teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. :)
  11. I'm not talking about what they teach, I'm talking about the actual wording, grammar, and things of that nature. What differences do you see? For me, I notice in the Book of Mormon you see people such as Nephi and others saying "I" indicating 1st person. In the Bible you see things written in 3rd person such as John 3:23-27 23 And John also was baptizing in Enon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. 24 For John was not yet cast into prison. 25 Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying. 26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him. 27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. Notice the 3rd person narrative in these verses? Then take a look at 1 Nephi 1:1 1 I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days. A 1st person perspective. Is there anything else anyone has noticed in the scriptures in regards to wording or grammar or things of that nature?
  12. This is just saying how fast she'd be changed. It's not saying she'd see the 2nd Coming of Christ although nobody knows when He will come.
  13. 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. Does this mean however we judge someone is exactly how we'll be judged at Judgment Day?
  14. Yea. Girls can wear make-up without it being noticeable.
  15. You mean like how Joseph Smith gave a prophecy in 1832 that there would be a war within the US and then we have a Civil War in 1861? Specifically, Joseph Smith said the war would start from a rebellion from South Carolina which ended up being the start of the Civil War. Joseph Smith also gave a prophecy of his own death. He didn't say how it would happen but he knew he would be murdered. Joseph Smith gave prophecy Stephen A. Douglas would aspire (not the same as being part of) to presidency. If he spoke against the Latter-Day Saints he, Douglas, would feel the weight of the Almighty. Years later, Stephen Douglas was nominated to presidency of the US by the Democratic Convention. 3 years earlier he had spoken badly about the Latter-Day Saints. It goes like this in order: prophecy of Mr. Douglas aspiring to presidency but would feel the weight of the Almighty before he died if he spoke against the Latter-Day Saints, spoke against the Latter-Day Saints years later in 1857, was aspired to presidency by nomination of the Democratic Convention, lost, then died about a year later. 16. These things are sacred which is the main reason. Plus, blessing of a baby is usually on a Sunday and done during Sacrament Meeting so that would be disrespectful in my opinion. In my opinion I don't think someone should need a picture or video to remember something that the Holy Ghost would attend. :)
  17. I'll give links to help because of how much there is but I will give an example. The Book of Mormon tells of an old-world prophet named Zenock that prophesied of the coming of the Messiah and was stoned to death for this. According to the Dead Sea Scrolls there was an ancient prophet in the old world known as the Teacher of Righteousness who was driven out of Jewish society and killed for prophesying of the coming of the Messiah. The Teacher of Righteousness is said to have descended from a person named Zadok. The Book of Mormon also tells of a prophet named Zenos who prophesied of the death and resurrection of the Messiah. The Dead Sea Scrolls inform there were many Israelite prophets slain. 18. I think the fact that most of us use the KJV is what throws people off. If you read in D&C 91 you'll see we do believe the Apocrypha holds truth. We just do not believe all of it to be inspired.
  19. The Dead Sea Scrolls also help give the Book of Mormon some evidence as well.
  20. Look, I've dated a girl similar to the one you're dating. Her house was a mess and she was the type that would wear baggy clothes and didn't wear make-up. Did that cause a problem? No. Why? Because I liked HER.
  21. So do you like her for her or her looks? Being afraid of commitment is more important than the things you mentioned about her. "She doesn’t wear make up, doesn’t do her hair, doesn’t care too much about how she dresses. And although I don’t care too much, I do care a little bit." Whatever you do, do not tell her to wear make-up. "Also, she was raised in a very messy house. On the other hand, I was raised in a very clean and organized house. I actually feel bad when I am at her house." That's her parents. Just because that's how their house has been doesn't mean that's how she is. "Third, she doesn’t seem very interested in education. She goes to college, but that’s it – while I study like crazy and consider education one of the most valuable things you can possibly have." She goes to college so obviously she is interested in education.
