  1. I agree with this. The Holy Ghost/Spirit is never addressed as "Almighty God" which I believe takes away the possibility of it referring to the Godhead as a whole. When the Holy Ghost is addressed with the term "God" it's usually addressed as "of God". Maybe an explanation of the Godhead's nature will help some. God the Father: In a prayer to the Father, given by Jesus, the Father is addressed as being the only true God. John 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. This does not diminish the nature of Jesus Christ and who he is nor does it diminish Christ's divinity. "the only true God, and Jesus Christ". Notice how the "and" makes it clear that the verse at that point is talking about the Father and then the Son. Jesus Christ: Jesus is referred to as the Son of God, God of Israel, and our Lord our God. The reason for being called the Son of God is obvious. With being called the God of Israel, that's in reference to ancient Judaism as this was Christ's title as well as others such as Jehovah. Last but not least, our Lord our God. He's our Lord our God because it is Jesus whom we must follow. The "our God" part is referencing to the fact that Jesus is our connection to the Father. Holy Ghost/Spirit: Spirit of God which testifies of all things. Many people use "I and the Father are one" to say Jesus is the Son and the Father. It's not saying he is literally both the Son and the Father. In the Book of Mormon there is something said along the same lines but it's explained. Mosiah 15:1 And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people. 2 And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son— 3 The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son— Jesus is the Son of God because he was begotten of the Father. Since Jesus did/does the will of the Father it would be as if the Father Himself did/does the things that are done. That's the explanation of how the Son is the Father. I believe "I and my Father are one" and "thus becoming the Father and Son" is metaphorically speaking on Jesus simply submitting himself to the will of the Father. With that being said, I do believe, in most cases, God the Father is who the scriptures refer to when they say "Almighty God". It just depends on the context since Jesus is also referred to as "our Lord our God".
  2. I know I'm reviving an old thread but I was looking up some things about Song of Solomon and the link for this thread popped up so I thought I'd give my input based on what I've read. There is a footnote that claims Joseph Smith said Song of Solomon isn't inspired. There's a good chance it was just a scribe that put this and it's just been attributed to Joseph Smith. After all, if it wasn't inspired, why is Song of Solomon quoted on at least three occasions in the Doctrine and Covenants? A verse quoted is Song of Solomon 6:10. In Doctrine and Covenants 5:14 and 105:31, if you read all the things before, you see it's God himself quoting from Song of Solomon. Tell me, if it's not inspired by God why would God quote it? And in 109:73 we see the prophet Joseph Smith, the same person you claim said it's not inspired, quote from Song of Solomon in prayer and he said his prayer came from revelation from God thus making the quote inspired. Song of Solomon 6:10 Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners? Doctrine and Covenants 5:14 And to none else will I grant this power, to receive this same testimony among this generation, in this the beginning of the rising up and the coming forth of my church out of the wilderness—clear as the moon, and fair as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners. Doctrine and Covenants 105:31 But first let my army become very great, and let it be sanctified before me, that it may become fair as the sun, and clear as the moon, and that her banners may be terrible unto all nations; Doctrine and Covenants 109:73 That thy church may come forth out of the wilderness of darkness, and shine forth fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners; Please note that you should read those entire sections from Doctrine and Covenants since the first two appear to be God quoting from Song of Solomon and then in 109 we learn that Joseph Smith said that in prayer when dedicating the Kirtland Temple and he said that prayer was from a revelation. Even if it's not inspired I'd say God certainly approves of Song of Solomon since God himself quotes from it twice and since Joseph Smith, a prophet of God, received revelation on what to say in the prayer.
  3. No, it's not. Regardless of someone calling themselves a Christian, once they attack others they are denouncing their Christianity or at least in my opinion that is. Being a Christian means to believe in and follow Jesus Christ. A very common thing is for others to spread lies about different churches such as ours. The Catholics experience the same thing. I've heard people say they worship Mary, the statues, etc. even though that's not true. When people spread these rumors they're breaking two of the 10 commandments given directly by God: loving their neighbor and not to bear false witness which essentially means don't lie. Once a Christian starts attacking others they are no longer following Christ which, as I said at the beginning, denounces their Christianity.
  4. To me, eternal marriage just seems like common sense. The Bible says whatsoever God binds let man not put asunder. If a marriage is ordained and bound by God how can death break what God binds? That would be saying death has power over God.
  5. No, a question like that is never asked. The only thing asked in regards to that law is "do you keep the law of chastity?" Nothing specific, it's just one question that covers the entire thing.
  6. That's the one my dad has and I've read it too. Thomas Monson is responsible for quite a bit. He's the reason the church is allowed in Germany, he's the one that set up how the current home and visiting teaching is supposed to be, and other things.
  7. It is. What's interesting is he never served a mission yet he was a mission president and is currently the prophet on the earth.
  8. I know what I read. He memorized it word for word.
  9. It's in a biography about him. My dad has it and I've read it.
  10. Back when Spencer W. Kimball was prophet, Germany didn't allow any kind of religious book being brought into the country. The members of the church there would have to meet secretly due to country law. However, they had no church handbook. The leaders of the church was aware of the situation so Thomas S. Monson memorized the entire church handbook used at that time, went to Germany, and wrote what the church handbook said in it word for word to avoid the "no religious book" law.
  11. As you're aware, after you're baptized you also are confirmed a member of the church and you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost meaning it will be with you as a constant companion. Since the Holy Ghost is in fact one being how is it a constant companion for everyone that's been confirmed a member of the church and has received the gift of the Holy Ghost?
  12. Don't you just love how prayer involves the entire Godhead? We pray to God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ and we receive our answer from God the Father through the Holy Ghost.
  13. Food and water because without them you'll die.
  14. It's helped my testimony grow even stronger for Jesus Christ's church. Many will say to not read any anti-mormon material. That is good advice. I, on the other hand, do read the anti-mormon material but I do so that way I can see what people talk about, research what they talk against, and then have an answer. In other words I look at it so I know what to expect from others so I can go ahead and give them a response. It gets them off guard too.
  15. I didn't think about this until earlier when I was going over some notes for my New Testament class I'm taking college. Many of the books of the New Testament were written years after the events took place. For example, it's believed that the tax collector that wrote the book of Matthew. I was wondering if it's possible that the same could have happened with some of the books of the Golden Plates.
  16. When the church was first restored it was the adult men that would have the Aaronic Priesthood.
  17. In my opinion the anti-Christ is here. Anyone that's completely against something is an anti-. There are people completely against Christ so that makes them anti-Christ. The Book of Revelation is an interesting book of scripture. My favorite is Revelation 14:6. Revelation 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, This is one of the verses in the Bible that refers to events in regards to the Book of Mormon. The angel that was seen was Moroni. He told Joseph Smith of the Golden Plates and described their contents as having the everlasting gospel. It is being preached to all nations. It doesn't say the angel would preach the gospel to the world, it says the angel has the gospel that would be preached.
  18. Yes. Joseph Smith received revelation from Christ that temples were to be built. Although they are important, the main thing is being obedient to Christ who is the Son of God. If Christ says do something, do it. It's not the thing he says to do that's important, it's the fact that it's Jesus that commands it.
  19. I understand your concern. I do wonder why the child cannot be sealed to both the biological and step fathers since adults may be sealed to other people.
  20. I hope I helped a little.
  21. Here's an interesting unbiased site: Godhead, Not Trinity - Mormon Beliefs - ReligionFacts Read what the links within this link says. While it says Jews recognizes the trinity as polytheistic, this site recognizes our belief about God as monotheistic.
  22. It depends on the context "Elohim" is used. "El" is what actually means God. If it's used alone it's singular but if there are plural verbs it is plural. If you want to make sure you use it in the singular way just use "Eloah". In other versions of the Old Testament you see the being talking from the burning bush with Moses is addressed as Elohim and in that sense it's referring to the God of Israel: Jesus. It's interchangeable. The scriptures address all three of the Godhead and states who they are. Anyway, I'll use scripture to clear up exactly who they are. (Jesus praying) John 17: 1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. In these verses you see it is Jesus himself that addresses God the Father as the only true God. Keep in mind this does not diminish the divinity of Christ. In fact, it shows how divine Jesus is by acknowledging the fact that he is the Son of the only true God. Also, there are verses where Jesus refers to the Father as "my God". You see this when he's on the cross, "my God my God why hast thou forsaken me" and when he told Mary he hasn't yet ascended to his and her (Mary) God. You see Jesus refer to the Father as "my God" but you never see the Father refer to Jesus in the same manner. In Hebrews 1 we see "Therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee." If you take the middle it would say the same thing. It would read as follows: "Therefore God hath anointed thee." This is the Father talking to Jesus. Now to Jesus: Psalms 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. Jesus is described as the Son of God and our Lord our God. Many non-LDS will try to use this to say Jesus is the one true God even though it was Jesus himself that said the Father is. The reason he is referred to as "our" God is because we have to go through him to get to the Father. Holy Ghost: Throughout the entire Bible the Holy Ghost is addressed as the Holy Ghost, Spirit of God, and many other names. To summarize this: God the Father is the only true God as Jesus said. Jesus Christ is the Son of God; he's also our Lord our God because it is by him that we will get to God the Father, the only true God. The Holy Ghost is the Spirit of God and bears witness to what is true. With all this being said, it makes you wonder why people created creeds and had to have councils to decide the nature of the Godhead. If people are going to believe in the trinity that was brought into Christianity by Constantine they can at least refer to it as the Godhead, the biblically correct term. Here's some history about the trinity. Constantine was a Pagan his whole life. He was never an official Christian until his death. He had declared that the trinity would become a Christian belief. The thing is the trinity's origin is in Paganism. The reason many early converts to Christianity voted for the trinity is because many of them converted from Paganism so it was a familiar doctrine to them. Also, many were killed because they refused to believe the doctrine Constantine incorporated into Christianity. Keep in mind that the trinity idea was non-existent in Christianity before Constantine said to make it a belief. People say that the way we believe is polytheistic. This is untrue. Polytheism is the worship of more than one God. We worship one: God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ.
  23. Again, irony that the person was dressed like a devil.
  24. It's ironic that they'd wear devil suits since the devil is the master of contention which is what the protesters was wanting. lol Wow. Good thing those anti's don't come here. Here in the south we retaliate.
  25. Or just keep them in your pockets like most people do.
