Wow there! This has gotten into a bit of a heated discussion. Calm down a bit, it's not worth getting all hot and bothered about.

Thanks for the replys! It's cleared it up perfectly for me!

As you may know, I'm a returning member to the Church and a few things are still not clear to me at the moment. One of these questions is about the Word of Wisdom. Let's start with what I don't do. Well I don't smoke, take drugs, drink tea/coffee and when I started to regain my testimony of the Church I have stopped drinking alchol. So you may say that I've got all the bases covdered, but I have one thing that is really confusing me as I read online and remember back those many years ago when I was active in the Church previously. Well all those years ago I was told we don't drink things like coke and pepsi because they contain caffeine, and I abstained. Since I've been looking into the Church again I've found that attitudes have changed, on the net it says on some websites that drinking soft drinks like coke is not breaaking the word of wisdom. So does drinking coke break the Word of Wisdom? I know that it may, well does sound like a really trivial matter but it has been going around in my head for a while and I just wanted to get a final answer

How do I know that Mormonism is true? Because the Holy Ghost bore witness to My Spirit of the truth of the restoration. I asked of God and He gave me a witness of the truth of the Church. You cannot prove your faith to other people, they cannot experience my experiences. But they can get their own testimony of the truth in the same way that I received mine. Read the book of Mormon, pray about what it says, and ask God wether it's true.

If you wanted to get your car fixed you would go to a mechanic wouldn't you? You could go to your mate who tinkers around with engines but he may fix it or he may not have a clue, you got to the expert to get the job done. Well if you want to know about what Mormons believe ask a Mormon. They are the experts and Mormonism as they are, well Mormons

Hi there, and welcome to LDS Talk. You have had a really bad few years haven't you, with some members of the Church adding to your problems along the way. It isn't any wonder that you are questioning what you believe after the way you have been treated, and I'm sure that I would be doing the same if I had gone through what you have. You are in my prayers, and I hope in the prayers of the other members of this site aswell. When you moved to New Mexico did you attend Church there? I know that your previous couple of places you lived you had a bad time with church but that doesn't mean that they are all bad. It's good to talk and here is a good starting point to talk through your worries and doubts, it's more or less anonymous here and that can help to get things off your chest. But the best way to get through those problems is to talk them through with a person that you really trust face to face. Is there anyone that you feel you could talk to about this in your local ward? I also get a bit upset about the focus on what appears to be the external things as apposed to the spiritual things in the Church, the dress code etc that you mentioned in your post. And like you said doctors say that a glass of red wine a day can help you with your heart. The thing is though where do you draw the line? That we have a moral code, a standard of modest dress helps I believe to keep us focused on the spiritual side of life. And yes some doctors say a glass of wine does help, but here in the UK there were other doctors saying the direct opposite. The word of Wisdom gives us a benchmark to live by, and like most things it can be a struggle. I'm a returning member of the Church having spent many years away from it. And in those years I have drunk wine and other alcholic drinks, but now that I've begun to come back to the Church, that has got to stop and it is a struggle. Friends who are not members of the Church find it hard to accept that I no longer drink, as do family members who are not members. It's a struggle, but most things in life are. I wish I had the perfect answer to your problem, that I could wave a magic wand and get rid of your problems and doubts, but I cannot. I hope that I may in some small way have helped and that others wiser and stronger in the faith also post their advice. I hope that you do work through your doubts and come to a point that you finally have peace in your life. GB-UK

Hi Pushka, I'm from Newcastle

The traditional view of Jesus as I was taught at bible college comes from the creeds and councils held through the first few centuries of the early church and not from the bible. It was these councils that decided who and what constituted God. As someone has already mentioned it was this that President Hinckley was refering to when he said he did not believe in the traditional view of Jesus.

I tried to get the whole thing from LDS.org library and couldn't. Maybe you can have better luck. Thanks, Dr. T So where does it say he doesn't believe in the Jesus of the Bible then?
-
Interesting, could you point me to a link that has what President Hinckley said please?

I think i'm going to give up on the computer version and get a book to write in, I think it will give me more of an incentive if I have a physical object to write in.

These are the ones that are full of the power of Satan. They are using the cover of islam to do all kinds of evil deeds. I totally support what the USA and the UK and their allies are doing in this war against terrorism. I only wish the more moderate muslims would stand up to the evil being done in the name of islam by these evil people.

Was wondering how good people are at keeping a journal account? I must admit that I am not very good at it and often miss days out. My friend who introduced me to the church was an amazing journal keeper, he seemed to write pages and pages of stuff. I've got a copy of a journal keeping programme and have used it, but not very often How are you like at writing up your journal?

Hi Traveller. So what you are saying is that these people are inspired by Satan to do what they are doing? I would have no argument there, but does this cover all muslims or just those who do terrible acts such as 9/11 and 7/7 attacks in the UK?

There are some wacko people out there at the moment. That he actually believes that rubbish is the real problem and I didn't see any people objecting to it either. I feel very lucky though, it was only a week ago this friday that my family and I returned from our holiday in Spain. If it turns out that they were going to bomb flights into and out of the UK as they have been saying on the news here, then we might not be here right now. It does make you think about what motivates these people to hate us with such passion.

From what you say they are looking out for what they believe is best for their daughter. If I was in a similar situation then I would as a father probably do the same thing. My daughter is only four years old, so i still have a couple of years to go before I have to deal with this situation. But in the end I would do what I believe is in the best interest of my daughter.
