    Love

Beauty is the raw reality seen through the eyes of Love. My view is that love is the intent and desire and action to see that the object of love receives everything they need to grow, prosper and become their very best possible self. It is not romance nor politeness nor lust nor pleasing words.
  2. I'm sure this is not what the OP is really about, yet I have found it useful to tally up my remembered spiritual experiences. Does the mention equate to 'sharing'? Perhaps it will be seen as boasting, though I really hope not. It's just what I recall of my experiences. As I said, pondering this has been a good experience in itself, for me. 1960s . feeling ....... always 'knew' the Church was true 1967 . inner(?) battle. before baptism heavily tempted to commit suicide 1968 . 'one' with God . upon confirmation rec'd _baptism of fire_ ............. *** 1971 .. visionary drm . prepubescent sex education 1975 .. agency forced . decision point on happiness 1978 .. attitude adj .. dream of mission field and my feelings 1981 still small voice. during mission, perfect recall of baptism of fire + msg 1985 . prompted ....... guided to speak out, re-activating old friend 1985 pure intelligence. discernment of brother-in-law's sister's condition 1993 . 'one' with God . immersion in _Love_ in last Sacrament meeting ......... *** 2000s .. dreams ....... many dreams; mechanism of dream recall; ....................... role of subconscious mind 2005 .feeling ......... rekindling of hope (Stake Conference - spiritual self-reliance topic) 2006 . 'one' with God . leaping heart pierced by _Joy_ w/ concurrent vision ... *** ....................... in Jordan River endowment room 2010 . agency prime ... decision point on Truth - sacrifice and gift *** = This is why I sometimes describe myself as a mystic

  4. jinc1019 mnn727 church These three comments are very good. Emotions, feelings, claims of knowledge, spirit of God/revelation/inspiration. Our conscious minds deal in all of these and must make judgements concerning their accuracy or utility in our reasoning concerning the world around us. What we often don't realize is the impact and even involvement of our sub-conscious minds in all of this. A good book to help us understand the basics of this is Robert Burton's On Being Certain: Believing You Are Right Even When You're Not:. When church says "When you know, you KNOW!", that's right. But it's hard to understand, put that way. mnn727 helps by saying "there is no doubt in my mind", and that helps us gain a bit more understanding. Certainty is a very complex emotion, never produced by the conscious, thinking mind. It is generated by the sub-conscious, thinking and feeling mind. Which operation we cannot know, cannot perceive. We have differing degrees of certainty that arise in our minds, and the strongest, most unable-to-doubt degree is that conveyed by spiritual epiphanies we call 'revelation' -- sourced not, as we think of it, in our own minds, but from the mind of God. So to boil it all down, in Mormon-ese, when we say we KNOW a thing, it is never to be taken as a evidence-based secular or scientific knowing, but rather as a CERTAINTY that is irrefutable in our own selves. We cannot doubt it, because of the intensity of our certainty concerning it. This is what we mean when we say in testimony that we 'know' a thing.

  6. Isn't it interesting that Joseph Smith Jr. used this very scripture - which was revealed through him - to estimate the age of the earth at 2.5 billion years. Think about that. Being 2 billion years shy of the reality was actually pretty good for the 1840's. HiJolly
  7. My opinion is that it doesn't matter. It's totally your choice.

  13. "I did not like the old man being called up for erring in doctrine. It looks too much like the Methodist, and not like the Latter-day Saints. Methodists have creeds which a man must believe or be asked out of their church. I want the liberty of thinking and believing as I please. It feels so good not to be trammeled. It does not prove that a man is not a good man because he errs in doctrine." (Joseph Smith Jr.; History of the Church 5:340)
  14. The Doctrine & Covenants IS indeed binding doctrine for all the church. In it, this is said: Doctrine and Covenants 68:4Â* But you see, this is at the individual level, person by person, for that is how the Holy Ghost testifies -- to the individual. ...and the Bible, of course.
  15. Oh, I do care, but... Back when the KJV of the Bible was produced, Faith didn't mean what it means today. Back then, it meant TRUST. Not some over-emotionalized, over-wrought belief. My salvation depends upon my TRUST in the atonement of Jesus Christ, and my TRUST in Him to save me. My willingness to lay aside all my sins and follow Him. But if I don't follow, then I don't really TRUST, either. I like what James has to say on this in the New Testament.
  16. On an institutional level, the previous link I provided explains it. Doctrine (or, scripture) is found in 3 places: the Scriptures; the official proclamations of the First Presidency; and the 13 articles of faith. On a personal level, scripture is whatever the Holy Ghost attests to(this is found in the D&C). And that explains why we have so many personal viewpoints/ beliefs that don't agree with everyone else.
  17. Mormonism is a lot like ancient Judaism/ Hebrew religion. What we think is not so important. What we DO is everything. Of course having the mysteries of Heaven revealed is awesome, but if we truly love God, we will do His will. If we have not Charity, all the rest is meaningless.
  18. Joseph's teaching on the subject does not rise to the level of Scripture, at least at the institutional level. There is a passage or two in the Bible that could be thought to touch upon the subject, but it is VERY unclear to most people.
  19. As God is now, man may become >> this is clearly taught in scripture. As man is now, God once was >> this is NOT clearly taught in scripture.
  20. Good thoughts, jinc1019. I personally don't think the Garden of Eden was _ever_ on this mortal world, but it was on the earth in a spiritual way. Mormons say that this mortal earth is in an un-glorified Telestial state of existence. And that before that, it was in an un-glorified terrestrial state of existence. And that when the Millenium comes, it will _return_ to an un-glorified terrestrial state. "The earth will be renewed and receive its paradisaical glory" (AoF #10) (I take "glory" in this case as non-literal, at least until after the Millenium). I don't think the "Fall" of the Earth brought the Garden with it, but it seems Joseph disagrees, perhaps only in a particular sense. I'm ok with that.
