  2. Welcome! We have a pretty great group of people here. Glad you've joined us.
  3. I recommend Pres. McKay's "Rise of Modern Mormonism" book in the highest terms. Also enjoyed Pres. Kimball's 2nd biography -- the one of his presidency years
  4. Official reasons aside... I think it's pretty obvious that BY and other GAs at the time were racist. And they continued to be racist for generations. But not ALL GAs were, thank God.
  5. Just as a passing comment... It is unfortunate that the detractors of the Church have found such an effective tool in convincing members of the Church that the Church is not true. What tool? The truth, as found in Church History that we members have never been taught. It's a tragedy. HiJolly

And so we should profit by the experience of Lucifer and those who went away with him in rebellion, and forever and always try to make our minds and our wills conform to the mind and will of God, the Eternal Father, and his Son, Jesus Christ, who are one, and who seek our welfare, our happiness and our salvation. PUNISHMENT OF THOSE NOT VALIANT The negro is an unfortunate man. He has been given a black skin. But that is as nothing compared with that greater handicap that he is not permitted to receive the Priesthood and the ordinances of the temple, necessary to prepare men and women to enter into and enjoy a fulness of glory in the celestial kingdom. What is the reason for this condition, we ask, and I find it to my satisfaction to think that as spirit children of our Eternal Father they were not valiant in the fight. We are told that Michael and his angels fought, and we understand that we stood with Christ our Lord, on the HiJolly

  8. I am a happy guy. Yet, the world is an interesting place. I appreciate the truth in this quote:
  9. It's ok because we believe in the basic goodness of people. Even gay people. It used to be that we LDS assumed the worst of gays because it was thought that they CHOSE to be gay. Based on some things (that could be debated, but I don't want to), the Church has changed its view, and IMO rightly no longer makes that assumption (even though President Packer chooses to still believe it). While I don't think these are the same, at the same time I also am very curious how the BSA/Church are going to arrange things on a practical level. I look forward to hearing the 'plan', and I really hope it makes sense. I think maybe you're assuming it _can't_ make sense. God always changes his instructions to us, depending on how we are. Really, it's a pretty much constant thing, as long as there are prophets on the earth. No need to lose your testimony, unless it is founded on false ideas. In which case, you're vastly better off changing with the Church. HiJolly
  10. My wife & I saw the movie today, and we both enjoyed the romp. And we're glad we didn't have to "witness Kirk's sex with multiple aliens". What movie was Vort watching?
  11. For those well acquainted with Gematria and the four levels of meaning as taught in Kabbalah, there is a lot going on in Song of Solomon. Mystics speak of their relationship with God in a very similar manner. HJ
  12. I read the book and absolutely loved it. Don't see any justification for your claim. HJ
  13. Aside from Vort or Snow's posts, that's unquestionably the most UNromantic thing I've ever read on this site. Wet blanket! HJ
  14. OTOH, you've got to keep in mind that the temple conveyance of the second anointing was kind of a 'pun' in sacred ritual. It was the fulfillment of the FIRST anointing of the temple endowment. And of course this can only be given by the Holy Ghost (or any member of the Godhead) personally. Not by Joseph or anyone else in the temple. So it's a pun. Maybe there's a better word for it. Suggestions? The symbolism in ritual is essential, but to my mind this level of symbolism is a bit mind-blowing. HJ
  15. Historically speaking, the 'fullness' of the MP was first taught by Joseph in Nauvoo. It was given by the second anointing and included, among other things, the keys to sealing on earth and in heaven. Therefore, one receiving the 'fullness' via the temple second anointing could thereafter perform eternal marriages, having authority within themselves to do so. This is why Pres. Heber J. Grant felt he had to discontinue the second anointings, to finally cut off the polygamist offshoots who claimed they had the priesthood keys to eternal sealings. Of course all the apostates had to do at that point was point out that Joseph saw God as 14 year-old and before the Church was established, thereby proving that the priesthood is outside and independent of the Church. ...and subsequently why Spencer W. Kimball when he had become prophet restored the second anointing. There's a reason the other General Authorities described him as a prophet's prophet. Of course he also did what he could to limit apostacy, removing from the Church the practice of established prayer circles within our Stakes (done outside the temples). I love history. It's a bit scary at times, but is a treasure in my life. A treasure only possible via the guidance of the Holy Ghost. HJ
  16. God works through both our conscious and our subconscious minds -- I know that much. But unconscious? Hmm... I've had visionary dreams, but couldn't really reflect on it until I was conscious. But my subconscious might be able to while I'm still unconscious... There's a lot we don't know about how all that works.
  17. I've enjoyed the thread. While perfection in this life is unattainable for us, sanctification and yes, being called and elected, I am absolutely certain, is possible. For me, it is valuable to ponder the relationship of being elected but yet not perfect. Just_A_Guy, I guess I really fail to see your POV. Sorry. The ACTIVE membership of the Church is paralleled by all 10 virgins. WE ARE both foolish and wise. How can we take offense at the truth, except via the natural man? As for Brother Snuffer. He says he was charged with writing the book by none other than the Savior Himself. I say, read the book, ponder it, and see if that claim seems justified based on Snuffer's works. I have done so, and am happy to have done so. It has blessed my life. You can be skeptical, of course. You can even characterize his book-writing as "taken it upon himself to spoon-feed doctrine that should be coming" to us anyways, but I don't suppose that helps anyone nor does it correctly convey Brother Snuffer's mindset. Just my opinion. HJ
  18. That is SO exciting! My first experience, I was a bit alarmed that they were insisting that I commit to covenants that I didn't even know what they were about. And I haven't gone through the temple prep classes lately, but 10 years ago when my sons went through them, I noticed they didn't discuss them. I personally took a 'leap of faith' and went ahead with the endowment (they give you the option to leave), and I'm glad I did. Just to ease your mind, here are the 5 covenants we make in the endowment: 1) obey God 2) accept the Law of Sacrifice (as it has been explained to you) 3) Law of the Gospel (ditto) 4) Law of Chastity (they explain it) 5) Law of Consecration (they explain it) So you might want to ponder those. Hope this helps. HJ
  19. I used to be a member of the Scottish Rite Research Society (SRRS), even though I'm not a Freemason. I have several very good friends who are Freemasons and temple worthy Mormons, one of which is a rather influential and nationally known Freemason. Freemasons are not a problem, to themselves or anyone else. Period. HJ
  20. No, I'm good for another 8 years or so. HJ
  21. No need for tickets; Yes, it's in the Tabernacle now but we'll be moving to the CC after Memorial Day. It's close enough that it makes no real difference. HJ
  22. I hope you're planning to see the MoTab Choir. In person it's really amazing and powerful. Thursday night @ 7:30 is rehearsal; Sunday morning @ 9:30AM is the live performance. (be there by 9:00) HJ
