  1. I think that you then describe perfectly what Prison Chaplain was defining as a 'cafeteria' Mormon. Pick and choose. Don't like 'Keeping the Sabbath Holy' but LOVE 'Book of Mormon'. Can't be bothered with 'Home Teaching' but can't wait for 'PH Meeting'. The Lord himself stated that he spits out the lukewarm, saying it would be better to be either hot or cold. The days are fast approaching (and, I dare say, from what I can see, are already here) when the sifting will begin, and those with a weak testimony will blow away as the chaff in the wind. It will be sad, it will be hurtful, but it will only hurt THOSE that are blown away. We need to be ready. Both spiritually and temporally. We can't 'slough off' anymore and pick and choose what we will believe...
  2. thank you Anatess! I just got done reading that book (again) and am now on 'Speaker for the Dead'. Didn't mean to hijack the thread. I give you back your keys...
  3. I would like to 'come out' here on this forum. I am a male lesbian. I also have a weakness for free-basing cocaine. It seems unfair to me that I can't act on either of these as it brings me happiness, and I am thereby being true to myself. It sounds ridiculous when put in this context, and just as ridiculous when put in the context that it isn't 'fair' for gays to act upon their impulses. We all have impulses. We all have selfish desires. We all have the opportunity to overcome them and become like our Heavenly Father and return to him. There is a great line in 'Ender's Game' by Orson Scott Card. Colonel Graff and Ender are talking about fairness, and while I don't have the book with me to quote it verbatim, the gist of the idea is that we aren't entitled to happiness, only doing what we are expected to do. Luckily, our HF DOES want us to be happy (his definition, not our very small viewpointed one), but not at the expense of being obedient. And as Lehi said, wickedness never was happiness...
  4. While I agree somewhat Ram about your point, David Koresh didn't go willingly to his death. He was off'd by the government after holing up in his compound. As for Jim Jones, he was just nuts. AND, he'd already killed a US Congressman and knew that the 'one stuff' was about to hit the fan. He also took lots of people with him when he died. Joseph and Hyrum did neither of these. So I think his point has validity, in that, as Joseph said, they went willingly 'as a lamb to the slaughter'.
  5. I was in awe. It was the closest I have ever seen a GA get angry in a conference session, and I would call it righteous anger. There is more to that story somewhere that got him to be so passionate about making sure that it was known that HE knows that the BoM is what it claims to be. I loved conference. I was taken in from Elder Scott's talk on responding to promptings from the Spirit. Conference was a spiritual feast that I will reflect on many times in the next 6 months until the next one...
  6. I will clarify: JF Smith was THE Prophet of the church. Bro Nibley, while a great intellect and one of my favorite authors, was not. That was my point, but I think you knew that. My point was to point out to Belledame that Bro Nibley did not smack JF Smith in the face, but had in fact stated something quite different. Also, as The Prophet of the church at the time I would tend to follow what he said/taught, in spite of what someone without that office would say. As for Eugene England, having never heard of him, I can't say one way or the other what to think of his thoughts. I did see that he was censured in a letter by Elder McConkie at one time, again, about what and why I don't know, but I will take what he has to say with a small grain of salt...
  7. 1) Hugh Nibley was not a prophet---JF Smith was. 2) If I remember right, what Bro Nibley said was that we aren't necessarily the FIRST ones to populate this world, but that perhaps this world has been used many, many times in this cycle, and has been used before for others to be tested on. I have become more and more skeptical of things as they are 'revealed' by science. Not that I disbelieve science, far from it, I welcome the discoveries. But we see things thru such a small prism that for us to say 'this is how it really happened' in regards to many things relating to scientific discoveries is arrogant to the nth degree. The origin of the cosmos has changed and changed and changed, even over the last 25 or so years. We still don't know (as far as I know) what light really is. There is dark matter that fills the universe that is a relatively recent 'discovery' (it is more of a theory that 'makes' things work out as it seems to work out), so we need to be very careful stating that what has been revealed may have to be 'thrown out' in light of recent discoveries... I agree with Hemi on this one: when Christ comes and we are told all things, I think 99.9% of us will go 'really?! THAT'S how you did it?' and it will have a smidgen of what we have learned and a ton of things we never imagined. JMHO...
  8. got em all. PLUS, the BoM, the NT, the PoGP scriptures. And it is MP3. Thanks again for the tip...
  9. Yup, Itunes has it. I just have to subscribe to the podcast, which MIGHT be a video...not sure, but we'll see as they come thru... thanks for the help...
  10. How? I went to BYUTV, and see that they now have a tab that is strictly for all of these series (D&C, NT, OT, BoM, Isaiah) so that you can watch whichever one you want whenever you want. Thanks for the tip...
  11. I have gotten hooked on the scripture series for the OT, NT, BoM, etc., on BYUTV, and saw the episode with Bro Skinner and Bro Brown and two other brethren where he related that experience, and the hushed (yet audible) gasp as the students first saw that phenomenon. When I heard that, I turned to my wife and said that for many, many years I had misunderstood the ordinance of blessing the sick. I had thought the anointing of oil as simply preparatory, etc., and that the actual blessing was the 'main' part (I know, they are both important, but I think you understand what I mean). After hearing that, I suddenly understood why we use olive oil in anointing the sick: we anoint the sick with the blood of Christ which took away our guilt and makes us whole before him. I had heard some other explanations of the use of oil prior to that, but now I understand that EVERYTHING points back to Christ, and having faith in him and in the atonement. So the anointing is what really matters, and it can be sealed w/o a blessing and all would be in proper order (like when conferring the PH on someone, the blessing is optional). When I was at BYU in August, I asked if the bookstore had these series on DVD. Sadly, they don't. I would love to have them to watch. These men have such an insight, both spiritual and historical, which helps me better understand the writings.
  12. It comes with practice and learning. My first couple of years or more were filled with self doubt and not a whole lot of faith. As I have matured, both physically and in the gospel, however, I have been able to develop that faith. I have had remarkable experiences, ofttimes when I myself didn't feel worthy of those experiences, in giving blessings to people. I have stated things there was no way I would know, but of course HF did know about that person and what they needed to hear. It comes to everyone differently. My mind is a complete blank before I begin, but as I speak I speak what I am prompted to say, and sometimes there is silence for a while as I wait for the impressions. It may be different for you, but as you practice doing these things you will gain experience and you will learn how the Lord speaks to you and uses you to do his will. May I suggest you ask your PH leaders (Bishop, EQP, etc) for help in this, and that you be given an opportunity to participate in blessings, even if you aren't the voice? It may help you in feeling that special spirit that accompanies a blessing. It is okay to feel inadequate at first, or even after a long time (I still do from time to time). But with practice comes experience and great blessings.
  13. yup, 'cancer' is always the issue, isn't it? Luckily, mine was an Oklahoma car, no rust whatsoever, but it had been in a front end crash and while the body work done was okay, it altered the front end (he changed the fundamental shape of the front, so when I tried to put New Old Stock parts on the front they wouldn't fit!). So that has taken lots of time to fix. Nearly there, but jobs, church callings, other 'honey dos' around the house make this a project I do when I have some spare time, and I body work, though doable, in this situation requires time. You want to do it right so that the car looks good, not just thrown together, especially on a classic.
  14. I was the same way. But one summer my wife and I were at my dad's and someone had a TR6 in their front lawn for sale and my wife said 'you could buy something like that if you wanted to to work on'. I was dumbfounded because I'd wanted something but couldn't get the blessing. But, being a guy, and knowing that blessings from the better half have a shelf life of about 2 hours, I found my TR250 in about 2 weeks and then drove 12 hours each way to go get it. That way she couldn't change her mind! The time will come when you can get one. Then you get to buy tools!
  15. Not a muscle car, but my picture here is my 'metal mistress', a 1968 Triumph TR250. Mine is not even close to this one, however. I'm trying to get the body done before it gets too cold here so that I can paint it and work on the engine and put the interior back in during the winter. May or may not make it. Gonna paint it Ford Mustang Yellow, with a black interior and am considering putting stripes on, either offset over the top of the car (hood to trunk) or dual stripes (same). Had an opportunity about 4 years ago to buy a 1968 Mustang, the one that had 4 headlights and a fastback rear. Only $5500, and I had the money. But I already had my TR, I had a Miata and a Jeep that I was working on constantly, and I had no place to put it. I REALLY wanted the Mustang, and my wife's blessing besides! But I didn't buy it, and felt I shouldn't. I lost my job not too long afterwards, and so I think that I wasn't supposed to buy it, but still, in the back of my mind.... Cars RULE!
  16. I have to say something here, because there is a contention (not angry, but a point being made) that apostles are not prophets, or that Paul was SIMPLY an apostle. Every April conference, and during our ward and stake conferences, we sustain the First Presidency AND the Quorum of the 12 PROPHETS, Seers and Revelators. THE Prophet, or President of the church, speaks for the entire church as pertaining to doctrine and policy FOR the church. It can be argued that the SP and Bishop/Branch President is the prophet for their respective jurisdictions in making policy (as long as it does not contradict church policy). So, I have to say that Paul WAS a PROPHET, and had the divine authority to be such. Peter was THE Prophet and President of the Church during Paul's ministry, but it doesn't make Paul any less of a prophet.
  17. I guess I'm confused on how posting an opinion on a board is considered 'micromanaging'? No one here has any ability at all to enforce any opinion they may hold. Some may argue that they are right to the exclusion of others, but so what? Why take it so personally? And if you've ever had the privilege of being micromanaged at work, you'll know that this forum is far from it... I have found in my years in the church that some people take offense when they are taught correct doctrine because it conflicts with their view of how things should be. We all need to have a sense of humility in hearing other's opinions to see if we are somehow lacking in being as obedient as our HF wants us to be. So when you say 'micromanaging' it makes no sense...
  18. ???What does FTW mean?
  19. Couple of them: Say your prayers, you son of a b****! Rooster Cogburn in True Grit Save Farris! Let's shoot her! Both from Farris Bueller's Day Off Do you know what my son said? No. He said (whispers into phone).. No, not THAT! You know where he heard it? Probably from his father!! NO! From your son! WHAT?! WHAT?! (sound of smacking in the background, and a kids voice 'what'd I do ma, what'd I do?!) A Christmas Story (too many lines to list, but our family has uses many of them in various situations)
  20. Roger Murdock: Flight 2-0-9'er, you are cleared for take-off. Captain Oveur: Roger! Roger Murdock: Huh? Tower voice: L.A. departure frequency, 123 point 9'er. Captain Oveur: Roger! Roger Murdock: Huh? Victor Basta: Request vector, over. Captain Oveur: What? Tower voice: Flight 2-0-9'er cleared for vector 324. Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence. Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor? Tower voice: Tower's radio clearance, over! Captain Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur. Over. Tower voice: Over. Captain Oveur: Roger. Roger Murdock: Huh? Tower voice: Roger, over! Roger Murdock: What? Captain Oveur: Huh? Victor Basta: Who? And the thread is officially hijacked!
  21. Pam, you beat me to the punch: I picked a bad day to give up cocaine! Then, there is: Bobby, do you like Gladiator movies? I speak jive... I'm crying just sitting here remembering all the great lines out of that movie...
  22. Surely you must be mistaken...I'm not, and stop calling my Shirley. From the funniest movie ever made... Sorry Pam, that quote of yours brought that immediately to mind...
  23. I'm conservative when it comes to making sure we don't cross lines on things. Ask some people here on my opinions regarding white shirts and ties. Snow wasn't making light of the TR interview. I didn't see anything in his note that was making light of the questions. I know that some are more sensitive to these things than others, and certainly moreso that I can be at times, but I think, Brother Utahrulzz you're seeing something that doesn't exist: mocking of the TR interview.
  24. Ben, Apparently YOU weren't in the secret meetings either! I guess the church DOES pay farmers to not raise food except for the LDS! Maybe you and I can pool our food storage together to survive since we obviously missed the secret meetings. Maybe that was why our Stake President called for our latest PH meeting to take place in the graveyard at midnight, and asked who had a goat to bring.... Darn, I miss ALL of the good meetings!
  25. Local leader's discretion. That simple. There is no hard and fast rule. But what is the reason for doing it in Sacrament meeting anyway? The blessing is the blessing, no matter where it occurs. I know that people do this in Sacrament for a new baby, and I think there is some tradition (gasp) and perhaps some recognition of a new spirit in the ward, but the blessing would be of the same effect if done at home, and in fact would be more intimate and meaningful, IMO. But that is my opinion, FWIW...
