  1. Could the difference come simply from our use of the word 'intelligence' for smarts, and that the way the Lord uses it to describe us in our pre-spirit body state (one of 'light and truth)? Perhaps there simply wasn't a word for Joseph to use to describe us in that existence, and intellegence was the one most close to it? We are all still intelligences, clothed in a spiritual and now a mortal body. We can increase our smarts here on the earth during this lifetime, but does that necessarily increase our intellegence self?
  2. Beeche, You are exactly right. I have moved around several times for better jobs, and have had 'signs' that what I was doing was right, and at times nothing at all. I guess the surest sign of a 'sign' is that the Spirit will then confirm that it was indeed a sign. We all fall into this trap. It is easier. 'Tell me what to do, and I'll do it', we say. In reality, that was Satan's plan. Tell us exactly what to do at all times, take away faith, take away growth, take away using your own brain, he'll just shepherd us right back to where we were. We wouldn't have to have any of those pesky problems like making our own decision, etc. D&C 8 and 9, Elder Scott's most recent talk, etc., show us how the Lord confirms to us what is real, what is his will. However (warning, MY OPINION), many times I believe that he simply doesn't care one way or the other. I do believe that He steps in in some cases, but in many, we are to work it out for ourselves and grow.
  3. ESPN College Game Day this week in..... PROVO! For the BYU-TCU game... Wish I were in Utah for this! And the worst part? It is being shown on Versus only, and DirecTV and Versus (Comcast) are fighting, so I can't get Versus. I wrote a nasty note to both of them today, telling them to quit being babies... I can't believe this. But my girls are both in Provo, so I told them to head to the stadium and get on TV...
  4. Jamie, Just so you know... God may forgive you, but the Forums NEVER will!
  5. Not to hijack the thread, but I love Amulek. He obviously had a background in the gospel because after a short time with Alma he is able to bear powerful testimony, so much so that he confounds Zeezrom (who, after repenting, was another great one). My favorite line by Amulek, which I believe speaks to our souls to some degree, is when he says "I KNEW but I would not KNOW". As the Nephites were, in reality, transplanted Israelites, it is POSSIBLE they are talking of multiple wives, but couldn't it be more likely that Amulek was instead responsible for not only his wife and children, but also his mother, aunts, cousins, etc, since he was well known and probably well off. And, if he was the first born (since we're speculating here) the head of the family would have fallen to him, which may be another reason for saying 'women' instead of 'woman' or 'wife'.
  6. I read through the recipe, and while the French are like the Chinese in that they'll eat anything, it actually sounded good. Like bacon, like brown sugar, love ice cream.
  7. I believe it is Texas/Oklahoma. Good game so far... Don't know why this game is not played in late November. I know that it is probably OK/OK State then, but I would think that this game would rank as a more bitter rivalry...
  8. If there ain't barbeque ribs, Iowa chops, and T-bone steaks in the CK, then it just won't be heaven!
  9. Again, from Japan. Took this French guy out for 'real' Japanese food when he visited our company. We got a half tuna head. And it was flippin' HUGE! Really good meat. Gave the eyeball (it was about halfway between a golf ball and baseball in size) to the French guy, who, of course, ate it!
  10. My worst food experience happened on my mission. Had 'natto', which is rotten soybeans. They look like they are covered in snot and smell like dirty socks from a high school men's locker room, with some jock thrown in. I mean, truly nasty stuff (and yet, my wife and kids love it. I make them eat it at the other end of the town when we eat!). Anyway, I had stopped on the way to an English class (we were visiting the other Elders) to pick up some sushi. Thought I'd try it. I gagged it out. Literally. Not good in Japan, but they looked kindly on this awkward American trying it out. And then there was the time I made chili, and we were making cornbread to eat with it. Didn't have any buttermilk to make the CB, so I put some vinegar in milk to 'curdify' it and use. Except instead of a little bit I put a lotta bit. Worst cornbread ever.
  11. On Cleveland Ave in Columbus OH. Because of Honda, there are lots of Japanese places there. They also have 2 Japanese foodstores that sell a lot of good stuff. Look on the internet and you'll find where they are.It has been years since I was there, but they had a great spider roll. I forgot to add to mine: Italian: Again, Buffalo absolutely rocks with Italian food. A little place called La Castelana serves the best spaghetti and meatballs (the sauce is absolutely amazing). They are a little place with traditional red/white tablecloths. There is another place my wife and I like as well, called Desiderios close to us. When we leave Buffalo, I will miss the food. Really, really great food. Weather sucks, but the food is great...
  12. Pizza: Most anywhere in Buffalo, but a place called Santora's makes the BEST Buffalo Wing Pizza, and great Buffalo Wings with bleu cheese dipping sauce (and I HATE bleu cheese!) Pie: Mayer Brothers here in Buffalo. The BEST pies ever. Greasy spoon: Waffle Huts all across the South. LOVE them. Mexican: Some hotel in Aguascalientes Mexico. Stayed there a couple of times. Japanese: Nearly anyplace in Japan . But in the States, Sapporo Wind in Columbus has great sushi, and HaruIchiban in Atlanta has great 'regular' Japanese food.
  13. I wouldn't poo poo this girl's experiences so quickly. If her family is doing things that attract and keep evil spirits around (simply drinking and smoking, IMHO, don't necessarily do this) then even if she has the home blessed, etc., it will make no difference. They'll just come back. And I believe that it is in the BoM (Samuel the Lamanite??) where it was prophesied that '[we] are surrounded by demons and can't get rid of them' (I've paraphrased, obviously)? Some, I believe, are surrounded by demons because of unrighteousness. Others, though, I believe, are more spiritually sensitive to such things. Elder Ballard (not the current Apostle, but Melvin) said in the 20s in a great talk 'Struggle for the Soul' that if we were able to see the hosts arrayed AGAINST us and surrounding us at all times we would quail at the sight and not get up in the morning. And I too am a believer that these things are real and do afflict some more than others. And I don't believe that there are 'good' spirits that just 'hang around'. That isn't in the plan. We read in the D&C how spirits appear to give directions, and simply hanging around, getting mad, etc., isn't part of our HF's plan. I would suggest she get a blessing from either her Bishop or HT. She may not be able to get rid of them from the home, per se, but she can have protection then, and have that peace that comes from that.
  14. As long as you don't let your Bishop know, you'll be okay. Once he knows, they'll get out the '2nd set of questions' for your temple recommend, which include such things as 'how do you like your spare ribs best: Texas or Memphis style?', 'do you drink Coke, Pepsi, or any other sugary drink?', and the last stumbling block, 'do you use white flour instead of whole wheat? If so, when will you quit?'
  15. I have only joined a couple, and it seems (SEEMS) to me that it is for a 'blast' message, where the moderator can send out a message to everyone about that topic you've joined (like 'Daddy drinks because you cry a lot'). at least that is what I think it does. Otherwise, it is just a waste of time, like most of the things on FB...
  16. were you watching Miller last night on the Factor? He used that phrase...
  17. Don't assume it is his first name. We're talking about GAs, so his name may be something like... R. DAVID Jones...:)
  18. Both you and Justice (I believe) stated that the 1st resurrection ends with the coming of Christ to usher in the millennium, and that those that die during the millennium won't be resurrected by changed in the twinkling of an eye.I haven't heard this before (not saying it isn't true, I just haven't heard it). I have always thought that the morning of the 1st resurrection INCLUDED the millennium, in that we are resurrected (albeit changed in the twinkling of an eye). Why is there a space between resurrections? What sources do you have to back that up (again, I'm genuinely curious, not trying to defend one or the other), that the the morning of the 1st resurrection ends with Christ's coming?
  19. go to the square foot gardening website to learn a very simple way of gardening. I did that this year (with a 4 X 4 box) as well as having a small area to garden (dug up a prior flower bed to plant my tomatoes in, as well as peppers and some other things, not more than 15 feet long by 4 feet wide). Got my seeds from both Heirloom Seeds and Baker Creek Heirloom seeds (be sure to get non-hybrid seeds, which is why I went to these two places for seeds). I had great success in both areas. The square foot garden was very easy to do, almost no weeding (really, I spent this year about 30 mins total, all summer, weeding), and everything grew great. I got a bunch of peas, some edamame (soybeans), 3 harvests of radishes, some okra, some carrots, and some onions and tomatoes from this little patch. My regular patch has strawberries, tomatoes, cukes, zukes, peppers, Japanese radishes, lettuce, and carrots. (made Fried Green Tomatoes the other night with the tomatoes that won't ripen, as it is already cold here in Buffalo, and they were fantastic) I will use both again next year, but probably build another box so that we can can more stuff for long term. Also got a dehydrator from Wally world. I am in LOVE with that. Much easier than canning, and stores in a much more compact space. We love our garden, and love the fresh produce. I will have lettuce for a couple more weeks, until it gets really cold here, and then I'll get everything ready for next year. Good luck.

Yup. I am currently an associate chimp, after having been a head gorilla for a while. May make orangutan soon, but it will be up to my monkey butt boss....
  21. It can be construed that way. Obviously, abandoning a balanced budget is no good, no matter if your the gov't or a family, if you spend more than you make eventually you have to pay the piper. However, I submit that there is another, bigger, reason for the mess we are in now. The rise of special interests (of all types) with their hands out and a lack of political courage by our 'representatives' on both sides of the aisle, and a fundamental shift in what the function of gov't is (small, border protector or large nanny?) I think explains it just as much if not more. Letting people keep more of their own money is NEVER the wrong thing to do. I still believe in my heart of hearts that if we abolished the automatic withholding of our wages for taxes, medicare, etc and had people have write a check or send in a money order on Apr 15, we would see a revolution the likes of which hasn't happened here since the Civil War. Instead, people think of their tax return as 'getting money from the gov't' or they use it as a savings account (they could have made more putting it in the bank and then paying their burden, at least they would have gotten interest off it it). The gov't knew people would associate their return as gov't largesse, and not what it really is: excess money that they paid in, interest free, to an entity that could care less about them. I think that a return to what gov't is supposed to be, which is a protector of borders and a builder of infrastructure, would take care of this problem. The gov't is trying to act in a way that it never was designed to do, and hence we have problems.

You got that right. I spent 7.5 months unemployed and although we had some money stashed away and I did get a small severance, we went into the hole and are still, 3 years later, trying to dig out. And it didn't help that my current employer, Monkeys R Us, cut my salary by 15%. Good luck Pam. I know how hard it is to keep your spirits up and give a darn about anything. But the Lord has his eyes on all of us, and tests us to the utmost (at times), but always rescues us eventually.
  23. Perhaps that is why the dresses were so flowery??
  24. Sifting, sifting, sifting.... Pray you aren't found on the opposite team, wondering how you got there... He is treading very dangerous ground here....
