What Is The Most Important Event, In History?
sgallan replied to boyando's topic in General Discussion
Allmosthumble - oh and if I don't exist, I don't have a name. It's only logicall Indeed. But I have it on good authority all of reality is just an illusion and we are all just parts of the matrix. Try proving this is not so. -

Heather - I am talking about your general ignorance (and I don't mean that to specifically insult you because you are in the vast majority) about accepted science, scientific method, and what is considered legitimate science..... versus psudeoscience. You, and the majority of others just like you, are why it is so important I educate my child - who is interested in science and wants to be a scientist of some sort - of what is proper science, versus the psudeoscience, and mythologies (of which there are thousands). I feed off of subjects and threads like this. It is what energizes me because I am so incredibly busy all of the time. And yes, in a very competitive educational college market (of which I have worked in most of my professional life - including admissions to an upper tier college), as well as the very competitive high technology market, those kids who spend their limited amount of educational time on learning legitimate science education, versus the many mythologies and psudeosciences, will have a huge leg up on those kids, and young adults, with interests in those fields, who waste educational time and resources. I have personally made those decisions both in the collegiate venue as well as the professional high tech venue. -
Whatever you do shanstress... never forgive. Very biting and dry and right on the mark..... I like that.

Irwin at his best, hillarious and educational..... http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5...7278575&q=steve PS - Shantress, I actually mean what I am talking about. But you are so much better than me I wouldn't expect you to understand.

Heck no. Whatever floats their boat. Down the road when she is competing to get into the better scientific programs, and later when competing to get in some of the better jobs, it will be that much less competition for her. It's to her advantage if people want to harm their kids education...... though it does tend to hurt this countries educational economic advantage. But hey, those high tech jobs unfullfilled will get outsourced (like they are now), and the well education young adults will get the good ones that are left. -

Much like evolution, the Big Bang is the generally accepted theory. I will take what the vast majority of what is taught in the nations, Colleges and Universities over the handful of scientist gadflies, many with a religious bone to pick, any day. It is the biggest reason why I am currently reading Carl Sagan's "The Demon Haunted World" to my kid as part of her home schooling every lunch (I am about to start now)...... to lead her away from the psudeoscience, religious inspired gadflies (and probably any religion or religious beliefs altogether), who do damage to legitimate science education in this country, with significant potential economic consequences. It is the number one reason I consider religion as more harm than good. PS - Thanks for getting me fired up about it though. I had been a bit lax in my lunchtime reading. I needed that fire lit under my butt. -

The most important event? Wouldn't that be the development of the Internet? I stand (sit) corrected. -
Shantress - You ever driven distracted with children in the car. Ever speed. Ever lost track of a young child in the house for just a few moments with the toloit seat up? Or a pets water dish out? Or an open electrical socket? Or ever left your child with someone who might have done these things? Or has any child in your care put themselves in a precarious moment, because you were distracted for that moment? All of these things are examples terribly bad judgement that virtually everybody has done...... and thousands of children get killed over stuff like this. But because you are ignorant of wildlife (and perhaps don't really care for it anyhow), and have issues with the famous in general, and have that American tendency to want to knock down the famous, you make a special exception of Irwin's bad judgement, despite a lifetime of bringing conservationalist awareness, and education, with regards to our wildlife.

With that kind of logic, how can you argue anything? Exactly. But I still people bring the statistical argument into things like the Big Bang/Creation/proof of God/existance of life, etc... debate all of the time. The statistical arguments are pretty easy to dispute just by using the logically fallacious rationale that everything is seemingly statistically impossible. -
DUDE- he dangled his baby in front of a crocodile. Please don't turn this into an anti-USA thing. Heck, Pushka's not a 'bad American' and she agrees with me. We have to agree to disagree here. I'm glad there are some who thought the man was an intelligent being. I did not after seeing him do this. Like I said...... it is an American tradition to slam somebody for doing one stupid thing no matter how much good they otherwise did. But you being the absolutely perfect parent/adult, who never did anything dumb with regards to kids, would not be able to comprehend this....

(Do you have any credentials as a statistician? Maybe you could figure that one out for us.) Statistics are a hoot. For example; at an absolute exact time of today I stepped on a pebble. Statistically it is virtually impossible for me to have stepped on that particular pebble, at that exact time. Had I done anyone of variations, numbering in the many millions, of life activities, starting from the day of my birth, and the happenstance of my birth, with the various permutations (like how did that exact pebble get there) that have nothing to do with me, all added in...... well the odds of me stepping on that pebble, at that exact time, are not pretty much not calculable. The numbers are basically to the power of the thousands, with numbers of zeros in the millions. Yet, I did step on that pebble, at exactly that time. Gee aren't statistics fun? I called them sadistics when in college. PS - Your scientific credentials, that allow you to dismiss the Big Bang Theory, versus the life work of legitimate scientists, are basically non-existant. Thanks for clearing that up. -

What old scientist has to die before the rest of them will come together and agree the big bang theory is so absurd it needs to die as well? Errr...... what exactly are your credentials in science? -
I suspect that there would be naysayers against pretty much anybody, no matter what they did. Especially in the US. It is sort of a national tradition to find the bad in somebody no matter how good they are entotal.....

I'll go with the big bang. -
My my Shantress - Must be nice living in a rock proof glass house. How do you ever handle the rest of us what with your obvious perfection?

I don't know about a second chance, but do you think he'd have a beer with me? He'd drink wine, you'd have the beer. :)

From the AP.... CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and conservationist known as the "Crocodile Hunter," was killed Monday by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44. I am saddened but not shocked. You knew the odds would catch up to him at some point. Unlike others who want to survive this thing called life..... Irwin died while truly living life to it's fullest. I can't think of a better way to go.

Who Is It That Really Converts Out Of A Religion?

Reni is a drummer. She has her own set, and plays advanced band for the local middle school band. The band teacher lets in the home schoolers. She can play a basic beat on her set, and knows a few songs she can play too as well. She hasn't gotten skilled/creative enough to make up any riffs yet. Who knows if she will..... musicians usually have a natural artistic gift and Reni is more of a technician. She gets the technical percussion abilities, and the ability to keep a good beat, from band. But learning music is important to a rounded education in my opinion. Take care, you seem like a kid with a good head on your shoulders. :) -

My kids name is Reni. People usually spell it Renee. Rene. Our last name is Gallan. People often spell it Gallon and more often Gallen. Even people who have known us for years. I am familiar with the misspelling of names. :) ps - My kid is a bit of a prodigy. Google Reni Gallan and she pops up in several places. She almost has her dad beat. -

Desire' Nauvoo is a discussion board for the LDS. It is busy and LDS only. The vast majority being adults and most of them very very smart. I don't know of a busy LDS only teen site. I am way past being a teenager so I have never checked into it. The heathen thing is a joke. You would be amazed at how many people think this sort of thing about those who do not believe in god. After awhile I just decided to call myself that as a bit of a joke. :) -

About the site.. I have a strong impression it is for people who live there..."We citizens of Nauvoo freely agree to these principles" Lurk for awhile. It is a disucssion board, started off of a site, started by Orson Scott Card.... LDS author of note. They are very strict about their rules and you basically agree you are a true believing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints otherwise you are not allowed to be there. And you won't be for long if you are not what you say you are. I suspect the majority of participants of that board live in Utah. I have never posted there, nor do I lurk anymore. I know about it from members who are among my on-line friends, and have lurked occasionally in the past. Desire'...... I word of advice.... don't be so quick to judge. You will miss out on an awful lot if you don't learn to check things out without pre-judging first. I just linked you to a site that is exactly what you suggested you wanted. A site where I guarantee you I disagree with the majority of participants on almost everything philosophically and politically. Just because I am a godless heathen doesn't mean I am out to corrupt you in anyway. -

My mother is anti-mormon, and disowned me forever ago, but that is okay. My ex-wife abandoned me, and my little one, when she was nine. I do not understand mothers that can do that to their babies. I don't think I ever will. In my opinion, I had a not so good confrontation with you earlier, and it was nice to be able to talk to you this way, and not feel threatened. Discussion boards are like that. You sort of did that teenage thing of judging those not like you in a harsh way. We all do this to one extent or another but that thing came under the category of don't judge a book by it's cover. For example, I may not believe in god, but I spend most of my personal and professional life, educating, coaching, and helping others, and have given up a considerable amount of money to do so. It took FOREVER for me to find this site actually, and I found it in hopes that everyone would be members, but non members add a nice spirit to all of this too! Here is a site that is strictly an active members only site..... http://www.nauvoo.com/ubb/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi -

Ya... please don't take this wrong.. it is 100% curiosity, I promise! No problem, I did say I'd answer anything. Why did you join this site? What made you come here? Well it was about eight years ago when I first tried out this religion and I am a bit of an internet junkie. The conversation was pretty good, so I have been here on and off since then. Is your friend on this site, and you just came for them? I don't think I know anybody face to face from this site. But a number of people here know me in many ways - from my kid to my athletics to my drug addicted wife - every way save an actual face to face meeting. You will find it hard to stop anyones beliefs online, and if you were to suceed, it seems like a waste of time anyway..(Not saying that is why you are here! Sometimes it feels that is why Josh is here though)... I am not looking for converts. I just see no particular value in religion or religious beliefs for me. That and I just don't believe in god. But if your religion works for you, and doesn't affect me in any adverse way, then I would actually recommend you keep it. -
Good thing I don't live in AZ..... I can still keep my donkey in the bathtub! CRAP! (Scott runs to get his donkey out of the tub!!)

Well, you don't believe in God at all.. I joined for spiritual upliftmint... Alot of non-members joined to learn... Why did you join?? I had a friend who is/was a member. The people were very nice. And it was my last shot at religion. I was a Baptist (on my own without parental involvement) until 13. Then a none believer until my late 30's. Tried this religion for about a year (which is how I am on this board), and it didn't make any more sense than any other religion, nor did I really ever feel anything other than out of place when praying and so on. So I just quit going. At this point in my life (46 now), I see no particular value in religion, nor religious beliefs. Any more questions? :)
