  1. Okay.., this is what you're saying: I don't believe your intentions Anatess. You're just doing a pseudo-conciliatory schlick. I think between the both of us, I would know better what my intentions are. But I don't want to waste my time trying to convince you of it. One thing I'm sure of, Trump is not a Conservative. He can't even properly define what that is. Trump is not a Liberal either. He can't define that either. Trump doesn't look at things in the prism of Conservative, Liberal, Republican, or Democrat. He is just not an ideologue in any way, shape, or form. He simply looks at things as Right or Wrong, Agree or Disagree, according to his world view. He's a Republican because he has more in common with the Republican platform than the Democrats. So he calls himself a Common Sense Conservative. But when he's dealing with deBlasio or Cuomo or Rick Scott, or the city council of Palm Beach,he doesn't see them as Democrat or Republican. He sees them as individual people he needs to work with to get things done. Ben Carson said it quite succinctly when defending his and Falwell's endorsement of Trump to a conference of evangelicals. God sends prophets to support non-believing Kings in the building of his Kingdom, just as Joseph and the King worked together to prepare for famine. I can't find the exact quote. I'll post it if I find it. In any case, if you want a conservative, Ted Cruz is your man. If you want a liberal, vote for the Democrats. If Ted Cruz doesn't make it to the general election, you have a choice between not-really Conservative versus Blooming Liberal. Romney, by the way, is not really Conservative either. And neither was McCain nor both Bushes. Nor Kasich. And I think you will agree Kasich is a pretty good governor regardless of his not-quite-conservative credentials.
  2. Issue Positions that Trump and Cruz agree on: individual Rights Abortion is a woman's unrestricted right: DISAGREES Legally require hiring women and minorities: DISAGREES Same sex marriage is ok: DISAGREES EPA regulations are too restrictive: AGREES Keep God in the public sphere: STRONGLY AGREES Domestic Issues Strict punishment reduces crime: STRONGLY AGREES Absolute right to gun ownership: STRONGLY AGREES Repeal Obamacare: AGREES Vouchers for school choice: STRONGLY AGREES Prioritize green energy: STRONGLY DISAGREES Marijuana is a gateway drug: DISAGREES Economic Issues Stimulus is better than market-led recovery: STRONGLY DISAGREES Pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens: STRONGLY DISAGREES Privatize Social Security: AGREES Foreign Policy Beef up the military: STRONGLY AGREES Support American Exceptionalism: STRONGLY AGREES Increase Border Patrol which includes a wall on the Southern Border: STRONGLY AGREES Migrate Syrian Refugees into US: DISAGREES Issues they disagree on: Progressive Income tax with higher taxes for the wealthy: Cruz Disagrees (Cruz is for flat tax), Trump Agrees Support and expand free trade: Cruz Agrees, Trump Disagrees (Trump is for Free trade only if it is relatively balanced trade) Avoid entanglements with foreign governments as much as possible: Cruz disagrees (Cruz agrees with W Bush), Trump agrees (Trump disagrees with W Bush) As you can see, Cruz and Trump have only a very few things they disagree on. Cruz voters and Trump voters would have generally the same high-level objectives.
  3. No JAG, we don't have 5 months to deal with NeverTrumpers. We have 5 months to deal with Hillary. When the nominee leaves the convention, it will be too late by then to have to convince Republicans to vote Republican when you need all the Republicans to batten down on the attacks from Hillary and bring independents and blue conservatives to your camp. In the entire history of the Republican Party, this is the first time that non-candidate Republicans waged an open war on their own front-runner.
  4. TRUST ME ON THIS... GRAPES AND DARK CHOCOLATE! I used to work 3rd shift, get off at 8AM and go straight to school... I lived off of Taco Bell's Soft Taco Supreme, grapes, and dark chocolate. IT REALLY WORKS!
  5. If Cruz was leading in the Republican primaries this thread would not be needed. The Republican Party will be in good hands with Cruz. Or even Kasich. But, as it stands right now, Donald Trump has a higher chance of winning the nomination. If Donald Trump becomes the Republican Nominee, the only thing that can make him lose in the general election is the Republican NeverTrumpers - he's basically gonna be eaten by his own. This will be like the Republicans getting handed the football on the 10-yard-line in the Superbowl and they stop running and hand the ball back to the Democrats and guided them to the end zone. There's a reason Trump is resonating with a lot of people including ultra-conservative Tea Partiers like Jeff Sessions, evangelists like Jerry Falwell, etc. It's easy to dismiss them as stupid and angry, etc., but that's not the case. It's good to point out that the people that are closest to him and know him best - the people of New York and Florida where he is a homeboy - solidly support him. Please take a few minutes to watch this Town Hall from April 12. It's the Donald Trump that I know. Minute 1-11 is the usual Trump stump statements... on Colorado/Cruz/RNC stuff... on details on his plans, etc. Minute 11:30 his family joins him. Each kid plus Melania answers how they felt about Trump announcing his candidacy. Don Jr., explains why this is the best time for Trump to run. Minute 15 Ivanka and Eric answers the reason why they can't vote in New York Primary. Minute 19 Audience starts asking questions to Trump and his family starting with Eric and what bond he has with Trump. Minute 22 Audience question about Trump's tone in the campaign trail and what his family thinks about it. Minute 26:30 Audience question to Ivanka on her friendship with Chelsea Clinton and another question about Trump's relationship with Women. Minute 30: Question to Melania on her views on kids and social media. And additional question on Trump's use of social media in the campaign. Minute 35:30 Question to Don Jr. about Trump's divorces. Eric also chimes in. Minute 38: Question to Melania about being a Mom. Ivanka chimes in. Minute 40: Question to Ivanka and her conversion to Judaism. Segwayed into a question on Trump's relationship with his in-laws. Tiffany chimed in about introducing her boyfriend to the family. My favorite part of this interview is on 43:38 when Eric quickly touches Tiffany's knee after the 2 older brothers pulled some "he'll have to go through the older brothers" muscle. Tiffany reaches to touch Ivanka's shoulder. It's a very natural expression of support from the brothers to signal that they're just ribbing her and a natural reaction of Tiffany reaching to her sister for female solidarity. I found this special because Tiffany didn't grow up with the 3 older kids as she grew up with her mother in California yet it is evident that she is still quite close with the other siblings. 44: Question to Don Jr. about what he learned from Trump on how to run a business and how tone is important (honey versus vinegar). 46: Question about alcoholism and how Trump instilled personal responsibility in his kids and what he says to parents with kids struggling with addiction. 49:20 Question about top 2 financial advice he gave to his children (this gives Trump's answer to a thread we have here about Education). 50:30 Question to each kid and Melania about what new thing they learned about Trump in the election cycle. Also question to Trump about what he learned. Trump answered that he learned about how his family gives him the balance that he needs in politics. Minute 54 is special - Trump says the most important thing in life is Family and how the most happy people are those with good families. 54:20 Question on which is tougher - business or politics. Minute 56 delves into delegates.
  6. Yeay! We have another Jewish expert on board! We could use your input on a lot of our discussions around here... WELCOME!
  7. Uhmmm... I don't think so. Differences in discipline/parenting style doesn't lead to mental illness. Rather, differences in discipline/parenting style MAY expose/acerbate/intensify already existing mental illnesses or those predisposed to mental illness. Misbehaved adults does not equal Mental Illness.
  8. Let me rephrase that... Having a girlfriend/boyfriend as a teenager is stupid. What's the difference between a girlfriend and a friend who is a girl? 1.) You get license for physical displays of affection. Uhm... can you say Trouble with a capital T? 2.) You get limits on who else you can hang out with (you can't hang out with Sally, you're my boyfriend!)... you're young! Why limit yourself? 3.) You get roped into spending lots of money. (It's Valentine's, Monthsary of our first date, Easter, Christmas, New Year... You have to buy me a present! I'm your girlfriend!)... if you have your own money that you didn't swipe off your mother's wallet, you're better off putting that money on... say... a mission fund than feeling obligated to spend it on some girl that you're going to have to leave to go on a mission. So, what's a date? Trying out a girlfriend. Guess what, you get more mileage with the "getting to know ya's" by being friends with every single girl you meet and "taking them all out to a ballgame".... all together. You'll get to know more girls, you won't need to be heartbroken, and you'll have a better chance of making it to the temple with your virginity intact. And you won't have to worry about what to do at the door...
  9. I COMPLETELY ABSOLUTELY WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree on Trade Schools! I wanted to go to trade school! I wanted to be a programmer! There was no need to go to college! Heck, Steve Jobs dropped out of college! But yeah, this was not practical in the Philippines where applicants for burger-flipper at McDonald's have Associate's Degrees because of the level of competition. But once the US economy gets straightened out again where the jobless rate is not as crazily high, then yeah, there's really not that much of a need for a full college degree. And guess what... a 6-month trade course in underwater welding leads to a 6-figure income out the gate... 6 months of work pretty much pays for all that "college".
  10. You don't need business to fulfill covenants. You don't need business to serve. When you do engage in business, it is for profit. There is NOTHING wrong with that. Unless you can feed 5,000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish by praying to the Father for it, starting a business to make a boatload of profit to turn your 5 loaves and 2 fish into more loaves and fish is your surefire avenue to be able to perform that kind of miracle.
  11. Yep, Plan B is always great. In my son's case, his Plan B is... Piano Teacher. LOL. P.S. His uncle is a Pianist too. He's Catholic, so he gets paid $60K to be the Music Director for the Catholic Church. His son who is only 16 is also a Pianist (but wants to be a Doctor). He makes $100 per Church Service (Mass, Weddings, Funerals) to provide the accompaniment and lead the choir. He sometimes makes $500 in one week! No such thing for Mormons.
  12. While this is a contributor of the decline of today's society, this really has nothing to do with Mental Illness.
  13. While this is a contributor of the decline of today's society, this really has nothing to do with Mental Illness.
  14. On mental toughness: Just like physical toughness, mental toughness also has to account for mental health. An asthmatic, for example, can be taught and trained and disciplined to be physically tough. But, it doesn't change the fact that he will have to fight through the elephant sitting on his chest and have to be cognizant of his limitations.
  15. If you've been here a while, you might have noticed that I'm big on education. It's a Family Tradition. My dad is one of 9 siblings and in that family there is 1 lawyer, 1 general surgeon, 1 teacher, 1 architect, 2 nurses, and 3 engineers. I graduated from Computer Engineering even as I'm more interested in programming because my dad insists that there's more money in engineering. He's an engineer. My brother graduated from Electronics and Communications Engineering even as he is more interested in soccer because my dad looks at him and says Soccer is not a career. My dad is right about something... there's more money in engineering. And without my dad, I wouldn't be where I am today. My brother especially... because he sustained a bad injury while playing professional soccer and it affected his game... he retired early and is now using his Engineering degree to feed his family. That said... I am not raising my children the way I was raised when it comes to choosing a college education. My eldest son, for example, wants to play piano for a career. I can just hear my dad in my ear... Piano is not a career. It's a hobby. If you're Mozart, you can make good money. If you're not, you're looking at piano teacher... peanuts. So be like my uncle who is professional musician on the weekends and a Pediatrician during the week. Or my other uncle who sings with his guitar for weddings, funerals, and church services and a lawyer during the week. But, I'm not telling my son that. Rather, this is what I'm telling him.... Find something you really, really, really love to do. Something you could spend your entire life doing for free. Get really, really good at it. The best. Learn perfect work ethic. The money will come. I'll help you figure out how to make money out of it. So yeah, he's trying to get good enough to audition for Julliard. But if he doesn't make it there, then BYU has a really good music program. So, he's only 14 and he figured out there's actually people who are interested in buying 15-30 second snippets of music he can create in his digital audio workstation for $10 a pop. My other son who is 12 is helping him with the drumbeats... people buy 4 measures of drumbeats for $12. The 12-year-old doesn't want to be a career musician though. He wants to build bridges and skyscrapers.
  16. I agree with this. But I need to qualify it with my statement. In Captilism - Business exists only for Profit. Business is the entity. Not the person. A Corporation, for example, is an entity. The Stakeholders are the people. The Corporation is simply the balance sheet. There is no reason for a business to exist unless it makes profit. A Business that exists without profit is either 1.) a money-laundering scheme, 2.) a charitable institution that didn't realize they get tax breaks by declaring themselves a charity. Now, there are Businesses that are non-profit. This doesn't mean that they don't exist to make profit... rather they exist to spend all their profits, which can be in the form of giving profits back to the consumers through price breaks or giving profits to the employees through paychecks. But... they're still in business to make money. Now... a businessman usually engages in business to fulfill a need. For a business to succeed, that need has to be something the businessman cares about. In this sense, the businessman executes service through his business. But, the business is there to make a profit so the businessman can do more service. If profit was not the objective, then he is better off organizing a charity to perform the service rather than create a business. The interesting thing about this is... a businessman who only thinks about profits in the execution of his business plan usually fail in business. The businessman who thinks about the service in the execution of his business plan usually succeed. That's the self-correcting beauty of Capitalism. It rewards good ethics and punishes greed within the system without needing government control. In addition... like you say, what a businessman does with the profits can be good or evil. Desiring more profit so the businessman can do more good is what Capitalism is well suited for. Desiring more profit so the businessman can do more evil is the downfall of Capitalism.
  17. I agree mostly with this. In addition though... a lot of times parents say, I can beat that crap out of them. Kinda like that the kid who just can't play the violin has to because that's just what we do. We play the violin. Now, there are times when the kid really has to. But there are times when... meh, you be you. My conversation with my son a month or so ago is a good example of this. My son has been battling a back problem for weeks and so I told him he'll have to stop jiujitsu until we figure it all out. Then one day, on the way to the doctor he tells me... Mom, what if I have cancer? I was a little taken aback by the question and realized he was serious. So I answered it seriously, "Well, if you have cancer then we'll take you to an oncologist and see what we can do about it.". And he says, "Well, at least I won't have to go to school anymore.". And I tell him, "Nope. You're going to school. You're going to seminary. Nothing much will change except we'll have to adjust your schedule around your chemo.". And my son replied, "That's right. Never give up. Never surrender." This would be the same for mental health issues. A lot of times, parents think - I'll beat it out of him. And on the other end, a lot of times, parents think... Oh, my kid has depression, he doesn't have to go to school because he'll be depressed... or whatever.
  18. You guys wanted to kill yourselves.... I wanted to kill somebody. My sister, in fact. Threw a knife at her even. Yes, mental health is part of general physiological ailment. And yes, it can be alleviated by healthy lifestyle choices including proper nutrition. Chemicals are released by the brain in response to stimuli. Sometimes, the body's chemical release system misfires or is just broken so it releases the wrong chems or it releases an unbalanced amount. This is the same concept as allergies. The body releases histamines in response to stimuli when it is not supposed to. The problem with the medical community in the US is that they go into focused specialties and forgets the whole. So that solutions to physiological problems are targeted for specific ailments without much regard to its effect as a whole. It's very reactionary so much so that mental health treatment gives this chem for that which caused a side effect here, so they give chems for that which caused another problem there until you end up with a chemical cocktail that causes more problems than it solves. The medical community, including sociological healing, needs to step back and look at a person as a whole instead of a sum of parts. Mental health can be better managed if it is approached as a teamwork of solutions that brings together nutrition, physical activity, mental exercises, discipline, faith healing, and chems as necessary. It also helps if the community broadens its understanding of what is normal for a person and only tries to effect change if that normal is not pleasing to God. For example, there's nothing wrong with an autistic person going to school with his shirt on backwards. It does not bring him farther from Christ,
  19. There's only one object of our worship and that is God. So I have no idea how you got worship on this discussion. And no. The objective of an economic principle is to be able to live in mortality in service of our God. The service is the eternal stuff, not the economy. The fact remains that when you have vast resources in your storehouse, you have a greater capacity to serve. So that, a billion dollars can do a heck of a lot more service than a couple thousand.
  20. Read the story again. Think on this. Who is at fault when a cassette tape manufacturing company loses money because some wise guy invented CDs? Is it greed that makes a cassette tape manufacturing company hire the CD-manufacturing-expert CEO whose talent has a market demand of $10Million? Is it greed that makes the CD-manufactuing-expert CEO lay off the cassette-tape makers who can't transition to CDs? You, my man, has this crazy idea that Businesses exist for the purpose of giving people jobs. Not so. Businesses exist for the sole purpose of making profit. And that, my friend, is capitalism. P.S. Your friend is dumb. The smart guy would sell the business for a billion dollars, give the employees a share in the profit and then open up 10 more businesses with the rest of the money and hire more people who will be a part of more success.
  21. And here's another one. Painting all CEOs as a cardboard box character. This is just another flavor of wealth envy. I'll give you a real-life example: Winn-Dixie Grocery Stores hired Peter Lynch as the CEO and a few years later filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Peter Lynch got millions of dollars for bonus. The Florida newspapers excoriated Lynch, employees - especially the ones that got laid off - went screaming to the press, etc. etc. Well, guess what. Winn-Dixie got in the mess they were in from years and years of not being able to adjust to the demographics of their customer base. This is not just a CEO thing... This is a Board of Directors thing and a market competition thing. Publix takes the niche of the upper crust and Walmart SuperCenters took the lower crust. Winn-Dixie was squeezed in the middle - not quite good enough to be Publix but not quite big enough to get Chinese products to compete with the price guarantees of Walmart. So, they hired Peter Lynch to solve the problem and offered him $10 Million bonus if he can bring them back to black after years of being red. Peter Lynch took the job, analyzed the situation, decided the best way to do so is to lay off a bunch of people then file for Chapter 11 to stay the creditors as he cleans up the place and reorganizes. It took 3 years but Winn-Dixie remained in business even as they closed some stores and opened others. They went in the black while still in bankruptcy and Lynch got his bonus per contract. The press screamed and Lynch told Winn-Dixie they can keep his bonus until he gets them completely through the bankruptcy. They got out of bankruptcy with a leaner and profitable profile, the Davis' who owned the place lost a bunch of money, Lynch got his bonus which he took a bunch of and invested in Winn-Dixie stocks as he believed in its profitability in the future. The Davis' then decided to sell Winn-Dixie to Bi-Lo which crashed their stocks. Peter Lynch earned every singly penny of that bonus and deserves a whole bunch more and it is so sad that his good name and character got skewered by a sensationalized media who has no desire to understand what it takes to run a business... or a bunch of liberals who like to skewer CEOs because they're rich.
  22. Right on. Ever since my very first novel (that was not assigned as a Reading Material in school) - The Mystery of the 99 Steps - I've always looked at the characters - in this case Nancy Drew - as an interesting study of the 3rd person instead of putting me in Nancy Drew's shoes. I'm thinking about it right now and I think it stems from me as a Filipino reading American books... it would be too much of a leap to be an American Detective. Rather, I'm more interested in what American Detectives are like and how they own top down jalopies. And that's always been how I see the characters in the story including Elizabeth Bennett. It's like I'm getting to know this person as a friend. That's why I really don't like Twilight, Hunger Games, and Divergent... I don't wanna be friends with those stupid girls. Now movies... yeah, there are movies like Superman The Movie where I fantasize flying with Superman like Lois Lane. But no, I don't fantasize being an airhead reporter who can't spell and has to be saved from her airheadedness. LOL. But yeah, I know lots of people who measure the meaning of their lives against their favorite novels.
  23. I don't remember that class in school.
  24. Field of Dreams applies here: If you build the field, they will come. Basically, build a system to the best of your ability rooted in Christ that is full of love and adventure that brings out the best in young women and fulfills the young women's motto. Then invite the young women... they will come. If they won't, then they've exercised their free agency and there's nothing more you can do. For specifics on what that system entails, that's where prayer and reflection and meetings with your YW leadership and Bishop comes into play. They're the ones that know your ward well and have the inspiration of the Spirit through their authority in their callings.
