  1. ?? I only add that you make a distinction that doesn’t exist. The Sacraments are a sign of Christ’s mercy, in who, we are saved. There is no other name by which we are saved, and our salvation is wholly through God’s loving mercy.
  2. Humane Vitae, an encyclical from Pope Paul VI in 1968, is considered prophetic. http://w2.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-vi_enc_25071968_humanae-vitae.html I think the two compliment each other in in many ways.
  3. A thoughtful post, thanks for sharing. If we’re going to throw out statistics and profile based on them, then ~85% of homicides in the US would be reduced by removing access to a single demographic: men. I agree that the secular/godless, anything goes, with no objective morality and an associated need for self reflection and repentance, is one of the main issues.
  4. Acts is not silent. It lists in chapter 1 the requirements to replace one of the Twelve. It names two men who met the requirement. Just two. No more. Certainly no one born during or after Jesus’ selection of the Twelve, would meet the qualifications laid out in Acts 1 21 Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us,22beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection.” 23So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Your comparison is illogical. I said Paul was not an Apostle, with a capital A, meaning he was not one of the Twelve. The word apostle means one who is sent. Paul, with Barnabas, were set apart for the special evangelization of the gentiles. Paul is the “Apostle to the Gentiles”. Barnabas was also called an apostle, one who is sent, in chapter 14 of Acts he too, was not one of the Twelve. No doubt, Paul has a revered place in Catholicism, the ending of Acts has him arriving in Rome. With Peter, they are celebrated together as Sts. Peter and Paul, the founders of the See of Rome. Beside the Gospels in the NT, it’s Paul’s writings that make up the majority of the NT. There are many reasons for this, but an overriding one is his developed theology, that has its pinnacle in his Letter to the Romans. As a side note, the Catholic and Orthodox churches have given the title of apostle (lower case) to other people. One of my favorites is Mary Magdalene, who we call the “Apostle to the Apostles”, because she was sent by Jesus, to tell the Twelve of the Good News of Christ Risen. file
  5. 1)This is kind of super wow and what, as in you believe the Apostles didn’t hand on something? 2) I thought the LDS Church taught that John the Apostle never died? That like the three Nephites he’s around somewhere still? 3) History supports Catholicism, in that, the Apostles did not ordain Apostles they ordained their successors, and called them by different names, ie, overseer or presbyter. The only new Apostle ordained was to replace Judas, and Acts clearly defines the requirement for Judas’ replacement. No man anywhere, meets those requirements today.
  6. I’m have a full fledged Utah Mormon accent. The two that crack me up every time are chester drawers and Sundee.
  7. But neither exists without the other. I worked for DB many years ago. It is wholly owned by The Corporation of the First Presidency, whose board members are all, in the LDS First Presiddency and LDS apostles. The appointment of CEO is determined by Deseret Management , the corporation that has all the LDS for profit businesses under it. There is nothing that happens in the for-profits that is not approved by the boards of the two corporations. Not saying that is a bad thing, just pointing out that the “split” is more of an accounting thing. At the time I worked for DB, Marvin J Ashton was the Chairman of the Board, of DB. With tax law changes, how DB reports to the non-profit side had to be revised and the board was rebuilt with no Apostles on it. With the DB board reporting to the two boards above it. BTW, I loved Elder Ashton and was sorry to see him go from DB and sad when he died.
  8. The best coffee maker at my work is a Mormon fellow, but I can’t convince him to add it to his job description. He know how to calculate and measure. ??
  9. Same here, but the official coffee maker at my work doesn’t make coffee. She makes some kind of awful crap that is not drinkable. However! If I add one of those free packets of hot chocolate to the cup of bad coffee, then it is better. Or! I can just make the 5 minute drive to the Sev. People who don’t drink coffee, do all kinds of weird things when they do make coffee. And my works seems to always assign the coffee making duties to someone who has never made coffee in their life. I.e. Keeping the day old coffee in the caraf and brewing poorly measured and low grade grinds into the day old coffee.....there ought to be laws against that sort of thing.
  10. Yeah,, their coffee isn’t all that great, and way over priced. I like 7-Eleven’s better.
  11. The SLC airport smoking rooms were phased out last year, and are now gone There is a Starbucks in the Marriott downtown, that is next to the Gallivan center. The Gallivan center is a popular spot in the winter, to go ice skating, and the Starbucks in the Mariott is a popular place where the skaters buy hot chocolate. It’s packed full of kids and teens buying hot chocolate. I’d wager they sell more hot chocolate than coffee on winter weekends. I’ve bought hot chocolate for kids there, myself There’s no way to know what is in a Starbucks cup by looking at it. It’s a huge assumption to think it is always coffee and kind of weird to worry about what other people are drinking! ??
  12. Hello Fatima. Eve is depicted in a mural in our church, as part of a group of OT Saints, so you’re answer got me to searching for the answer. Tradition has them in Heaven. Their memorial is celebrated on December 24th (optional). Also, the Harrowing of Hell has, in Tradition, that Adam and Eve were among those who were released. CCC 635: “Greatly desiring to visit those who live in darkness and in the shadow of death, [Christ] has gone to free from sorrow Adam in his bonds and Eve, captive with him - He who is both their God and the son of Eve.”
  13. The light rail, named Trax, has a stop 1/2 block away from Temple Square. Lodging will be less expensive, away from the downtown area.
  14. St. Mary Magdalene is my patron saint. I chose her because like me, she was a sinner who converted to Christ. She has the title "Apostle To The Apostles", because she was sent by Jesus to report to the Twelve her witness of Christ Risen. St. Anselm called her "Friend of Christ". What an amazing thing to be counted as a friend of God! My personal aspiration, to be a friend of God, inspired by her...I am a work in progress. She is also the patroness of our diocese. "Most blessed lady, I who am the most evil and sinful of men do not recall your sins as a reproach, but call upon the boundless mercy by which they were blotted out. This is my reassurance, so that I do not despair; this is my longing, so that I shall not perish." (From St. Anselm's prayer.)
  15. More I am often surprised at the intended outcome, which changes me. God's will isn't changed, I am by seeking to be conformed to His will. Persistent prayer is for our benefit. It prepares our hearts. The passage you used as an example it is encouraged as a protection against apostasy Spe Salvi has an excellent section on the topic, that I recommend.
  16. Hello Traveler, My career is in tech. My religious background is N/A. ? As in I converted to Catholicism from atheism. I'm not a believe for the sake of believing kind of person. I'd say yes my faith has been proven, in my own experiences. To answer your question I believe prayer is a means by which we align ourselves to God's will. "Thy will be done." I believe the answers to all questions are found in seeking out the will of God. Both in prayer and in practice.
  17. I think so too. Some are myths, in the usage of the word, as meant to convey important truths. Anagogical, allegorical and moral, not entirely literal. Adam and Eve as an example conveys the important truths that God is our creator, who was disobeyed by our first parents, which had consequences. I view the snake and the supernatural plants and fruits as allegory. There is also heaps of anagogy, particularly from a Christian POV (and Catholic Eucharist).
  18. "Live at Pompeii" David Gilmour live in concert. It was, as a Rolling Stone review called it, stunning. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/david-gilmour-talks-stunning-new-pompeii-concert-film-w502048 Also just happened to be screening in the very same theater where I saw "Pink Floyd The Wall" in 1982! Serendipity.
  19. This addresses God's immutability. God seems to "change His mind", but it the point of view of humans. God's will or purpose is always served. Often OT stories reveal God's nature, particularly a salvic nature, His justice and His mercy, which are unchanging. Prayer is a good example, where we may ask God for this or that, but it is always God's purpose that is served. When our prayers are answered positively we didn't change God's mind. In the answers to our prayers, there may be a lot going on, including God's nature is revealed to us.
  20. You're calling is you're calling and do not do anything that is someone else's calling.
  21. And there are two "r"s in the word library. (Not libary.)
  22. The verse you site, in context, is addressing women. There are multiple verses through the NT that address Adam. Romans 5:12-19 is one of my favorites. The reason is the same as Eve's. the fruit is good to eat so why not give it a try? And the same old thing people do today, we don't need to obey God's command. "I can do what I want" in this case, the temptation was "do what I want" to be like God, (The sin of pride.) Not sure what you mean by gain. The temptation was disobey, eat the fruit because it is desirable to look at, tastes good, and you will become like God in doing so. The question is what was there to keep. They and their progeny living in the immediate presence of God, immortality, a good life. Christian doctrines have the belief of original grace, which was lost. Lust is viewed as a disordered consequence of the fall. "Be fruitful and multiply" is understood as a blessing. God does not require us to sin in order to be blessed. Christians also believe in a Plan of Salvation. It has a name, Jesus Christ. We also believe Jesus was prepared before the world was created. We don't view God as thinking or acting in a linear fashion. That is our view, as creatures living in time. You can think of it as, watching someone paint, the final creaction comes into view over time. We view God as seeing the entire painting all at once, without there being a "time" (our view again) where He did not. The painting is not yet finished, from our view. The universe continues to unfold.
  23. Some adult women use Halloween to dress in ways they never would otherwise. Living out a fantasy for a day. Don't confuse fantasy with reality. Adult humans, male and female, instinctively behave in ways that attract a mate. Societies and men largely dictate what that is, for women. Modesty is a choice, to put the matters of the flesh aside and as Jane Doe pointed out, cultivate a Christian virtue. Most of the Western world are cultivating, exclusively, the carnal senses. Whether it be overeating or baring as much as possible. It is what sells because the natural man/woman, is carnal and sex is fun (duh). It's like asking why does a dog like a bone? There are women who wear high heels who are not looking for a mate. We aren't animals. We're rational beings who can wear things for our own enjoyment and for no other reason, than that. What women do or don't do isn't always about men.
  24. A friend of mine teaches kindergarten, and says she has had kids start who don't know how to open a book. Now that's appalling. The kids who have been read to and have had their own books do better in school, is her advice.
