  1. I read ISIS is hiring.
  2. ad ho·mi·nem ˌad ˈhämənəm/ adverb & adjective 1. (of an argument or reaction) directed against a person rather than the position they are maintaining.
  3. Altruism, self-preservation, or genuine compassion. Altruism reminds me of college biology course, where a paper published regarding an altruistic gene was discussed. Tied to religion of course, and the so-called "God gene". My paper against, was that the authors provided no evidence of a altruism or God gene, i.e., which allele(s) had mutated from godless, self-preservation to altruism. Things that make you go ?.
  4. At a business conference years ago, one of the marketing give-a-ways that are done all over a expo floor was fake full sleeve tattoo with the company's log all over it. It was hilarious, and looked very real as long as you didn't get up too close for inspection. That's what the sleeves you posted reminded me of. Wouldn't cause much of a stir at mass, people would just be, oh, there's another colorful Catholic...our parish is full of em (errr, us).

  7. I first saw him in "Kinky Boots". Still my favorite of his films, where all of his talents are showcased.
  8. Think of it in a new way. When you see a woman who is pregnant, you see that there is a child in the world, who is not yet fully present in the world. Focus on bringing about the Kingdom of God now, in 2017. God's Kingdom is in this world, now, yet not made fully present. Faith, hope and charity are the virtues to practice in this endeavor. Also change how you are self-reflecting. Self-reflecting is good for discipleship. At the end of the day, make one assessment. Not with the intention of beating oneself up, or of self judging. But with the intention of cultivating discipleship. With love for God and recognizing, truly, that God loves you. What went well during the day. What did not. For things that didn't go well, how would you change how you react, or think, or do, or anything at all, to move the not-so-well towards discipleship. Then you have formulated a plan for the next time, should it arise. You'll be prepared. If in that daily reflection towards discipleship you determine there is something to be repented of, do so, and believe, in your heart and mind, that you are fully forgiven. And last, remember to love your neighbor as yourself. Notice in that commandment you must love yourself as well as your neighbor! See in yourself what God sees in you...someone who is loved so much, and worth dying for. Cease self judgements, as in, judging your eternal destination. ONLY God can judge us. Move your self reflections away from self judgement and towards discipleship. It will take time, prayer, practice and grace. Don't be discouraged, Don't give up. May God bless you and guide you.

  10. Z For Zachariah Following a disaster that wipes out most of civilization, a scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and a miner (Chris Pine) compete for the love of a woman (Margot Robbie) who may be the last female on Earth. I watched it because I like Chiwetel Ejiofor.
  11. Facebook is not a must have invention. The internet has uses for minors, such as school work. One of my teenage nieces refuses to be on Facebook. She says it is for old people. When my daughter was 13 yrs old, MySpace was The Thing. I work in IT, and had her internet activity whitelisted. I allowed MySpace as long as I was her friend and approved all of MySpace contacts. She had a fit, telling me I didn't trust her. I explained more than once that I do trust her, but I do not trust all of the other people on the internet. Now that she is an adult, she has told me she gets it, and understands now what I was doing I taught her IT stuff when she was young. HTML at nine, that kind of thing. At 13 she was making a fan site for the anime she enjoyed, I allowed all of that, no problem. Just because a parent restricts internet activity, does not mean they are Luddites. By the time she was about 15 I had taught her how to build a PC. One day I find her surfing freely all over the internet, and so I knew, she had figured out how to turn the whitelist off. My IT heart was proud. Good job! Is what I was thinking. But what I said was, I can still monitor your internet activity, so watch it girl.
  12. The fact is old folks were once upon a time....teenagers. We remember how we were, and how our friends were, and so wouldn't trust our own teenage selves. At least not all of the time. Teenagers can be sneaky lil twerps one minute and the most awesome people in the world the next moment. Keeps the old folks on their toes, and one day, they'll be the old folks with memories of their teenage selves, turning an eye askew on the newest crop of teens.
  13. Seems to be all about the brazier, so maybe try changing that out? There are bra options that make for smoother look. Wearing less tight fitting clothing, well fit, not baggy, would be the way to go in any hot/humid climate. Highly recommend cotton linen, and avoid knits.
  14. For myself, when grace that is left out, then that is the ...but, but... I do like this song.
  15. Usually, your every day Catholic makes no difference, in the context of discussing the human soul, the words spirit and soul are synonymous. In other contexts, Spirit can also refer to the Holy Spirit. Catholic and other Christian scholars have much commentary on St. Paul's "mind, soul and spirit" (nous, psyche and pneuma). Among these the RCC rejects a duality of the soul, that is, that man has two kinds, one called spirit and one called soul. Also rejected is that man is made of parts. The human being is viewed as holistic, so when the "parts" of a human are discussed it is with an understanding the parts are signifying something about being human. Not a description of separate pieces, entities or other disparate things We can be nuanced about our usage of spirit and soul. Sometimes spirit can signify that part, or state, of the soul that is in a higher communion with God, often as related to our more carnal tendencies. Such as when St. Paul says the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. St. Paul's "mind" is viewed as the higher rational aspect of the soul, especially in its communion with God. Hope that helps.
  16. Sure. A couple of things. Reincarnation as you describe is how people with a Judeo-Christian background describe Eastern philosophy/religious ideas. In them, there is not a belief obout a soul. Eastern beliefs distinguish between being, doing, having. Being is the focus, in one way or another, of all meditations and discussions of "enlightenment". The paths to enlightenment are about being. Westerners usually confuse being and doing as the same thing. In Roman Catholicism a soul is the supernatural "ingredient" of a human being. A human being is an immaterial, incorporeal soul and a corporeal body. Where Mormonism uses the metaphor, a spirit is slipped into a body like a hand into a glove...this metaphor does not work for Catholics. Philosophically we reject the concept of two material things taking up the same space. We are beings, human beings, and a human being is body and soul. Metaphorically, our soul is like a spoonful of water dropped into a vase of wine. At death, the corporeal body dies and decays. The immortal, incorporeal, soul does not. Soul separation isn't quite accurate, though, as it is more one aspect of our being dies and the other does not. The resurrection of the dead restores the corporeal to the incorporeal, and visa versa. The being, that we are, is human, and this being that we are is both a soul and a body. Having been interested for a few years in Eastern philosophy, and practicing Hindu concepts during that time, I view Roman Catholicism has similar, but different, concepts. St. Paul tells us we are children of the light and should walk in the light. This is instruction on being...who we should be. Which is what God has created us to be. It is who we are. Catholics get this, that is, that we are called to be as God created us. In other Christian traditions there is the same understanding of being, and in others this teaching of St. Paul's (and similar passages elsewhere) are viewed as what we should be doing. Absolutely our understanding is tied to the understanding of our soul as being, as human beings. The Western conflagration of being and doing, being and having, permeates our culture, including in the media and arts. But they are not universally held ideas.

  18. Canon Law is not even a doctrine or dogma of the RCC, it sets forth the laws by which the RCC runs. It does apply Doctrines and Dogmas to the Laws that run the Church. And as I said, in some cases, yes, I agree with you. But not every abuse case is exactly the same. Canon Law doesn't save anyone's soul. Bishops absolutely did not want to remove Priests from receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as without it, their soul would be lost. This is why abuser Priests are not excommunicated. As an excommunicated person is cut off from the Sacraments.
  19. Not being your parent, I'm somewhat amused. But dang if you were my daughter, I'd seriously consider a lifetime ban from all screens. Get it under control lil chickie!
  20. Canon Law is not scripture. Most of Canon Law is ecclesiastical, ie, human law, with the intent of applying divine law to a society...that society, being the RCC. And no, my point was exactly, that Justice is not something that secular institutions can fully provide. Recognizing the difference between justice and vengeance, is a Catholic thing. Jail, in the majority of countries, does not limit anyone, including clergy, from receiving the Sacraments. That is what Catholic prison ministries are for. The problem that has been revealed in some of the abuse cases, is that the Priests who committed crimes were not sequestered and secluded away but moved by their Bishops from parish to parish. Some of the Priests abused children in every parish that they were assigned to. These are the worst of the cases, with hundreds of victims of a single criminal. Other cases, the criminal was removed from ministerial service, but the crime was not reported. In these instances, yes, I agree with you. The Bishops then were following Canon Law, until 1997 when it was made mandatory by US law to report child abuse. It's in these cases, where there are instances of a Bishop giving the criminal priest the benefit of a doubt. That after having received psychotherapy, and having been declared "cured" (a 1970's thing apparently, that pedophilia could be cured with therapy) the priest would say, in effect, "Oh yeah, I'm cured.", all the while continuing on with their predations and leaving a trail of victims.
  21. Canon Law does not protect criminals and the abuse was church wide, not only in the US. In Ireland there were religious orders circling the wagons. In Africa there was a group of priests working together, as a band of predator rapists. Around the world, there were Bishops protecting criminal priests over the welfare of children. And there were some Bishops who were dealing the best they could, including getting outside help in the form of psychological counseling. Those who had good intent, but they erred in giving abusers the benefit of the doubt, allowing the predators to continue their crimes. Child abusers are the best liars and manipulators. And there are priests and bishops who have been wrongly accused. It's devastating, all around. But to NT's point, the secrecy has, and is still, being laid bare. Massive changes have been made in the US, all having the goal to protect children and prevent criminal predators from being ordained in the first place. We are healing yes, but we are not yet whole. The search for Justice, is the heartache. No matter how many are imprisoned, or how many victims are paid, Justice isn't satisfied. I think it impossible, to provide any restitution that would satisfy our need for Justice. But it doesn't mean we should stop trying. An article I read several years ago, put it best: "Let us return, wounded, to Christ." It is only in Him, where complete Justice is found, and where we can be made whole. The suffering of the victims and the sins of the abusers, are not hidden from God.
  22. I think a distinction can be made between reprimanding and advising. A trusted non-parent adult advising a teenager on personal matters is fine and happens all the time. It's the parents who freak out, because the kid is seeking or getting advise from someone other than themselves. Sorry to break it to all you parents of teens, but they are seeking and getting advise from all over the place, which you have no control over. Better to teach them what advise to take or not to take, i.e., how to reflect on all advise that they receive and how to discern when to slap and when to thank.
  23. I don't have a problem with a trusted adult talking with someone else's kid. i do have a problem with the same trusted adult not being transparent with the girl's mother. It just needed to be a phone call to the mom, beforehand. That's the what the heck, I mean. Each situation is different. With this one being on social media, I think it is even more appropriate for a youth leader to have the discussion with the girl. For more than one reason, including other teens in the group have seen the video and may be unsure about one or more things. The youth leader has a responsibility to all of the girls in the group.
