Fiannan Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 If anyone spends any time overseas, spends time reading news articles or watching TV, and then return to the USA, the one thing they will notice is how stupid the news networks in the USA must consider the average American. What level of education do the info-tainment networks of CBS, NBC, ABC and even CNN nowadays strive to aim towards? The news is shallow as well as so biased it is maddening. That's what is so wonderful about the internet -- at least one can view information from around the world. My suggesting is that people interested in good reporting in this election year try out the following publications:The Independent | News | UK and Worldwide News | NewspaperNews and Views from The Times and Sunday Times | Times OnlineTelegraph.co.uk, News, Sport, BusinessLatest news, sport, business, comment and reviews from the Guardian | guardian.co.ukNow there are a lot of journals out there from the USA that have excellent reporting but just for general information that goes way deeper than the American press is willing to do then these are good sources. A few years back I did hear one commentator say that if you want good information on the British royal family it's best to go to US publications that have no vested interest in protecting the royals -- he then said that if you want good information on US politics it's best to go to British newspapers since they generally have no vested interest in furthering the objectives of a particular political party in America. Elphaba Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Latest news, sport, business, comment and reviews from the Guardian | guardian.co.uk I really enjoyed spending time with the Guardian. I found these three articles that you will, I'm sure Fiannan, really enjoy.A man alone: the twilight of the Bush presidencyAmerica's falling out with the president: the devious world of George BushBush May Convert to CatholicismElphaba Quote
ampat777 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Hi!! You are not wrong but I can´t completely agree with you. The news shown in the US and in Europe is just different. In the US you have lots of stations who show lots of local news because that´s the most important for the people living there. After the local news there is the national politics as that´s always a hot topic for the national viewers. In Europe (I speak for the countries I know, Austria, Luxemburg, Germany, Belgium, UK) it´s always been a tradition to have 3 parts in the news show: the local news, the world news and the sport news. They do show about what´s going on in the world but don´t think that they are neutral and not biased! They are not! Usually it´s only the bad news about the US that you are show and never ever something positive. They show the negative side of the Iraq war but not the other conflicts in the world where troops from the own countries are involved. As for the best news sourse in the EU and one of the best worldwide I would recommend BBC news. They usually show the important news and are not too much biased. But don´t forget that the average American or Europea or from wherever he is will not watch the best news show if he isn´t interested and open to do so. Many just don´t care. Eric Quote
Elphaba Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 What level of education do the info-tainment networks of CBS, NBC, ABC and even CNN nowadays strive to aim towards? When I was in the business, we had to write at a 10th grade level. It's not as easy as you'd think!I agree it is extremely unfortunate. Elphaba Quote

We might watch local news on TV, and I will occasionally suffer through 15 minutes of tragedy TV (aka headline news) during lunch, but that's all. When looking for other sources, look at these also. One from Israel, one from the Arab viewpoint. They often have starkly different commentary on the same news. Haaretz DailyArab NewsLM Quote
skalenfehl Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Excellent post Fiannan. I never watch the mainstream media or news. Quote
Aphrodite Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I have to admit I noticed a real difference in news when I have been in America. I remember thinking, it only seems to report on American news. I have always felt isolated from the rest of the world when I have been in America. Maybe because the country is so big it doesnt have the time to devote to other countries. For example, I dont know if you have heard but recently a woman who has been held underground for 24 years by her father was released-this was in austria and it was front page news for at least a fortnight. It wasnt even british news. I always come back to England to find out some huge thing has happened or someone famous has died! lol my family joke about it.I agree BBC news is the best-in fact i am about to watch it now!! Quote
Aphrodite Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Oh yes and when the news did report on something british they never pronounced things right!!! Quote

Aphrodite Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 ;)Exactly why I find it difficult to understand Brits...they talk funny! Haha-not the BBC news readers-you pretty much have to have a certain voice and accent-I cant imagine any northerners reading the news-they are mostly well spoken southerners, although we do have one welsh one. Hemidakota Posted June 17, 2008 Report Posted June 17, 2008 I remember when I searching the truth about TWA Flight 800, I turned to the local French news newspaper [France] after receiving some inspiration using REMOTE VIEWING that solidified what I seen. Don't ask about remote viewing...not for the faint of heart. LOL Quote
RachelleDrew Posted June 18, 2008 Report Posted June 18, 2008 I rarely watch/read/ or listen to American news stories anymore. CNN is overrun by stories about Britney Spears or whatever. Quote
