mountainrider Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I heard this phrase for the first time recently when referring to the Prop 8 efforts in California. Do you have "the same 10 people" that do almost everything in the ward? The "same 10 people" that raise their hand when the bishop needs people to get something done? The "same 10 people" that are willing to follow the prophets call and knock doors on a Saturday morning? Just wondering Quote
Truegrits Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I have not actually counted them, but yes. There is a core group that you (everyone) knows can be counted on. Quote

It starts with a step at a time when we raise our hands to voluntary our time or commitment. It starts with saying hello to your neighbor or waving at them with a smile. It starts with a conversion when someone who is seeking help, being there as a listening ear. Then, it becomes a habit and soon, you begin to feel that inner spirit swell with love, affection, for life around you. Quote
lilered Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Thus the very true saying: If you want something done in the ward, give it to the busieset person!!!! Quote
NeuroTypical Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 We have a yearly wood cutting and selling deal to raise money for youth programs. The kids can chop and stack and sell, but they can't run chainsaws or chippers, so the adults do that part. We've heard a few pleas on some Sundays to show up, because it's "the same people" carrying all the adult load. Quote
Starfish Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 How many of us here think we're one of the "10"? Most of the time, I think I am. Sometimes I have to back out for a breather (out of the "10", never out of the Church) because, truthfully, sometimes Church activity can be overwhelming. There's just always a need . . . always a sign-up sheet. OTOH, every good thing in my life is a direct result of my Church activity. Quote
MorningStar Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Yeah, I thought it was 5, but it seems like more in my ward. :) Quote

Still_Small_Voice Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Sadly, all the service projects seem to be on Saturday mornings. I work every Saturday from 1000 to 1800 hours. That about counts me out of everything. I miss the service projects (not to mention the ward temple trips). *Sigh* Quote
Guest SisterofJared Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Sometimes the same 10 people GET to do everything. I've been in wards where the same 10 do it all-- and I hear grumbling from those who never get included. Perhaps the leaders should reach out to some of those less involved... they may find them eager to pitch in. SoJ Quote
Truegrits Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Perhaps the leaders should reach out to some of those less involved... they may find them eager to pitch in. While that has been tried/done in our Ward, and is true occasionally, for the most part it fails. We especially have trouble with our Primary callings. We will have two/three teachers out on any given Sunday....with no calling ahead of time for subs. And it is habitual.Sometimes the thought is, to call someone less active, and the Calling will give them the motivation to be active. I have yet to see that happen, in my Ward.I am 99% of the time the only one to be there in my "shared" calling; and there is never any notice...and I am the assistant in the calling...Most of our "10" have two and three Callings, and it is not that we would not like to share the blessings, it is that the blessings are not being accepted. Palerider Posted October 18, 2008 Report Posted October 18, 2008 Sometimes the leaders do try to reach out....bottom line is....you can't make them help....:) Quote
