mormongurl Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I read somewhere that someone said a person couldn't be a temple recommend holder and still take the medications that a person that suffers from mental illnesses takes. I dont personally buy into this philosophy but I was just wondering what your opinion is. As a person that takes alot of medications these meds are neccessary for my mental stability. I am perfectly stable and live a happy and prosperous life and am raising 2 daughters on my own and am no harm to them whatsoever. Mormongurl Quote
MarginOfError Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Anyone that says that a person taking medication for mental illnesses can't have a temple recommend is probably suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness commonly known as stupidity. On the other hand, a person with a mental illness whom a bishop feels isn't prepared to understand the lessons taught in the temple might not be given a recommend. But that stems from the individual's ability to comprehend (similar to the concept of accountability for baptism) and not from the use of medication. Quote
beefche Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Thanks MOE. I'll raise my hand in support of your answer. Quote

Tru2u4eternity Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I know for a fact that is not true because mental illness is something that is in my family. A person choices are the defining factor in their worthiness to attend the temple. If a person is mentally ill say bi-polar but they are faithful to the gospel and its standards then there is no reason why they should be denied the priviledge to go vise versa if a person is mentally ill and makes choices that cause them to be unworthy to go then they have to be accountable. Choice is the key thing here. Heavenly father doesn't punish us for our afflictions he reprimands us for our sins...being mentally ill is not a sin. Quote
yenni Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 This is not true at all. I have depression and my Branch President as well as my Relief Society President recommend I take anti-depressants. For the most part it is a chemical imbalance that is out of my control. A mental illness is still an illness and needs to be treated like anything else. Quote
