marshac Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 After spending this evening doing my husbandly duty of cleaning the bathrooms, my arm is totally dead. Why you ask? Hard water crud at the water line in the toilet... I've scrubbed for about 20min or so, and I saw some progress, but I lack the strength to continue scrubbing. Anyone have any tips on removing hard water junk shot of a chisel? Quote
beefche Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Try using CLR. It's found in any Walmart or Target. Spray it on, wait a while, then scrub. Do again if necessary. That stuff is amazing. The key is to give it time to soak in. Quote
beefche Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 You might try using a shower spray preparer thing in the toilet in between cleanings. It's the stuff you spray in showers after each shower that helps reduce the mold, hard water spots, dirt, etc. Quote
GingerGolden Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 If you pour about a 1/2 cup of baking soda in the toilet tank and let sit over night it should remove the mineral buildup in the tank and in the bowl. Not sure about hard water junk shot of a chisel, but maybe the baking soda will help with that too. Heck use a whole cup, surely baking soda can't hurt unless you follow up with vinegar (?) Quote
pam Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I've used denture cleaners to clean stuff like that in the toilet bowl before. The tablets you can just drop in the water and let them do their thing. They have always worked pretty good. Quote
Dravin Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 While I know the idea is to not scrub, pumice is a wonderful thing. Quote
Guest Alana Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I HAVE THE ANSWER!!!! First, my horrible hard water toilet story. This toilet was completely caked with hard water deposits. I took out the water, and filled it with several bottles of CLR, using towels so that it would stay moist all the way to the top. Then I scrubbed scrubbed scrubbed. Nothing happened. Then I got a pumice stone and I scrubbed, nothing happened. Then I got desperate and tried a giant screwdriver to get it off. Did nothing. I also tried a few different brands of CLR type things. NOTHING! Then one day I went to the dollar store and got a bottle of The Works toilet bowl cleaner. I put the whole bottle in and left it for about an hour (watch out for fumes!) then went back and scrubed it with a toleit brush. I figured, even if it was going to look crappy at least it could be germ free. When I flushed something wonderful happened. EVERYTHING, all the hardwater deposits, ALL OF IT came off! That toliet now looks brand new:) SO there you have it 'The Works' toliet bowl cleaner. Best stuff on the face of the earth. It is pretty potent though, so don't breath it in. Oh and if you get The Works bathtub cleaner, don't put it in a spray bottle, I almost died... Quote
pam Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Just take a shotgun to it like the guy at the fastfood place in Centerville. You'll never have hard water build up again. Quote
marshac Posted March 15, 2009 Author Report Posted March 15, 2009 I checked out "The Works" and it appears to be HCl- no wonder it gets rid of the hard water stuff- I wonder how my cruddy "automatic toilet bowl cleaner" tablet will react with the hydrochloric acid... I know the tablet treated water started to melt the latex gloves I was wearing, so I should probably wait until the tablet in the tank is used up before I attempt any bathroom chemistry. :) Thanks for all the ideas! john doe Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I've used a razor blade to get rid of old build up that won't come off any other way. Quote
Wingnut Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 Check out Linda Cobb's website (I love her book: Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean). Here's a link to the tips page, just click on the bathroom link. Queen of Clean Quote
Moksha Posted March 15, 2009 Report Posted March 15, 2009 I went to an industrial cleaning supply store and got a bottle of clear solvent that sprayed on. Needed to be left 10 minutes and the gunk easily scrubbed off. I assume industrial cleaners are stronger. Can't remember the name of the stuuf, but they would know. Quote
rodheadlee Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 We use white vinegar, pour in a bowl full past the mineral line and let it sit for about an hour. It should wipe right off with no scrubbing needed. Our toilet is a seawater toilet so I don't know if this makes any difference. We use white vinegar to clean mold and mildew off of our wood too. marshac Posted March 21, 2009 Author Report Posted March 21, 2009 I'll give the vinegar a shot- i'll report back in an hour! Quote
marshac Posted March 21, 2009 Author Report Posted March 21, 2009 No dice- although I do have an overwhelming desire to color easter eggs now I'll try the acid soon Quote
Guest missingsomething Posted March 21, 2009 Report Posted March 21, 2009 I know the tablet treated water started to melt the latex gloves I was wearing,EWE... this means you touched the toilet water... Quote
