Well, Utah is the most Republican state in the country and you have to admit the Democratic Party Platform does not reflect the values or beliefs of the LDS Church, regardlerss of what Sen.Reid says.

I used to vote Democrat until I joined the Church.

Even regardless of what the First Presidency says?

Latter-day Saints as citizens are to seek out and then uphold leaders who will act with integrity and are wise, good, and honest. Principles compatible with the gospel may be found in various political parties.

And your point is what?

My point was... the quote. You say that the Democratic Party is incompatible with church members, the First Presidency says otherwise. I just wanted to point that out because a lot of people here forget that message.

The Democratic Party has views that are incompatible with church teachings. Abortion and Gay marriage just to name a couple of obvious ones. The Democrats also have the reputation of being the anti-religion party....especially the Christian religion. I find it amazing that so many are able to turn a blind eye to these issues and still vote for their candidates. I find it equally amazing that anyone could believe that bigger government is better and that higher taxes and increased government spending actually grows the economy and creates prosperity.

Of course, I am also amazed that anyone buys into the Republicans being a conservative party or a party of fiscal responsibility. This quote is attributed to Abraham Lincoln, I haven't researched it to see, but I like the quote and think it is spot on:

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

The First Presidency tells each member to vote their conscious. Most members in Utah vote Republican.

Sen. Reid says the Democratic Party is more sympathetic toward the poor, like the Savior would be, but in reality the conservative Republicans donate more to charity than any other group.

Just what politicians of either party do you really think are "wise, good and honest":):)

Very Interesting

U.S. Census Bureau, 2006 American Community Survey, August 2007

What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961;

Buffalo, NY (2nd)20hasn't elected one since 1954;

Cincinnati , OH (3rd)...since 1984;

Cleveland , OH (4th)...since 1989;

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.'

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats---yet they are still .....................

I have to say this on all my posts involving American politics... I'm not American. So, I am neither republican nor democrat nor anything else...

But, let me see if I can give you a certain perspective on this one that might help you understand LDS people voting democrat.

First of all: I'm pro-life. Even more pro-life than most pro-lifers. I do not believe in abortion as an answer to rape or incest.

That said, I can understand completely, why a pro-lifer would vote Democrat. By principle, this is when somebody would take the decision out of the government and place it completely within a woman's free agency. It's basically giving the woman freedom to choose... just like what they call themselves - Pro-Choice.

I saw a bumper sticker once that said, God is Pro-Life. Well, yes, BUT, God is Pro-Choice as well, if you really think about it.

Now, what is not right - is when you put abortion rights out of the democratic process of VOTE and hide it behind "Medical Privacy" in Roe vs. Wade! Because, in majority of the states, abortion was banned by virtue of public vote. Putting a federal override on these state laws in the guise of "Medical Privacy", is a COWARD'S WAY OUT. If you really feel strongly about CHOICE, then put it on a Federal VOTE! Otherwise, let the law stand as it is. I would support whatever the people voted on, if that is truly what the MAJORITY wants.

I can write something just like this for gay rights as well. But, it will make my post too long and nobody would want to read it...

If you think what the majority votes should stand, I hope you don't live in California.:)

Not sure I understand what you're referring to. If it is proposition 8, then I'm very happy for Californians. It shows that majority of Californians still find family as the nucleus of society.

If the time ever comes when majority of the people would support gay marriages, then, I would support the LAW of allowing gay marriages - not that I would stop proselyting on the perils of a gay society - and then hope that the opportunity arises again to change the law.

I can also understand why LDS people would vote in support of gay marriages. There are certain privileges offered by government to married couples that are not available elsewhere. For example, medical decisions, healthcare coverage, inheritance, etc. But, if I was an LDS who is leaning towards supporting gay marriages for these reasons, I would rather fight for allowing people to choose their "dependent" or "beneficiary", instead of legalizing gay marriages. Except, that option is not on the table.

Just to make it clear: If I could vote in an American election, I would vote pro-life and anti-gay-marriage.

No, I'm referring to all the other things the voters have passed over the years just to have their vote thrown out by the courts. Proposition 8 isn't over yet. They don't give up that easily when things go against them.

Oh, I see what you're saying. Yes, it must be frustrating, especially, since the court judges are appointed. You can't even "vote them out".

Posted

Yep, those Federal judges are appointed for life. Great retirement plan too. Death.

But they may not be so quick to mess with Prop.8. That is in the California Supreme Court. I'm not sure about California, but supreme court justices are elected in my state(Ohio). I'm sure someone here knows the situation in CA.

Rather than easing up on the Demos - why not take down the Republicans as well. I have believed the differerence between the Republicans and the Democrats is:

The Democrats say the wrong things and do the wrong things.

The Republicans say the right things and do the wrong things.

At least with Democrats you know what you are getting.
