Guest pimpberries Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 My suggestion would be to start with the Missionaries. We all need to crawl before we walk and gaining a testimony.....a belief in basic gospel principals will give you a sure and solid foundation by which to gain further light and truth. Good luck on your journey!Yeah, I suppose I should slow my roll; you're right. Quote
Guest pimpberries Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 My guess that the treasurer of the pantry would be someone who works in the local Bishop's storehouse. That is a volunteer position and then also works, as you mentioned, as the local fire chief. I still have a couple of friends that live in Merced, CA from when I lived there many years ago.Ben RainesYeah, he works for CalFire [state/County] as well, I imagine you're right about this pantry/storehouse, I didn't ask.. But that's great that you know where Merced is..! [lots of people don't] Quote
bytor2112 Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 Yeah, I suppose I should slow my roll; you're right. LOL......but, you know, that is the way the Gospel affects people.....it makes them hunger for more! Meeting with missionaries is a really cool experience and these young men and women have been called and set apart to carry the gospel to the world......you won't be disappointed. Quote
Dravin Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 (edited) ------I'd certainly buy a nice Book that contained all of the scriptures and writings recognized by the LDS church if anyone has suggestions. It may as well be something that looks nice, and is full of all the information and resources if I'm going to pay for it, any suggestions ?What we commonly call a 'Quad' (short for Quadruple Combination) contains, The Bible (KJV with LDS cross references and Topical Guide), Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants and Pearl of Great Price which are the canon books of scripture for the LDS Church. If you really want to buy one, you can buy it from here Online Catalog - Cover material (binding) in various colors and of various qualities, from genuine leather, bonded leather. You can get less expensive versions by getting a Triple Combination (the above minus the Bible) plus a Bible in a economy soft cover and hardcover. You can also get the study ciriculim book for our Sunday Gospel classes Product Details ( Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith ), also there is a quick guide called True To the Faith which you can get here Product Details ( True to the Faith: A Gospel Reference. ) which is a quick reference guide for the Church's stance on a various doctrines and issues with scripture references. There is also a book called Gospel Princples/Essentials which is the course of study for new members and investigators but I can't find it for purchase at the above website. In the case of Gospel Principles and Teachings of the Prophets if you just wander into a meeting house chances are if you ask they'll just give you one, good chance on a soft cover Book of Mormon too, but they may not have one on hand if they don't have one on hand they'll make sure to get you one. Teachings of the Prophets (current and past years) can also be found electronically here LDS.org - Melchizedek Priesthood and Gospel Princples here LDS.org - Sunday School Table of Contents - Gospel Principles. mikbone Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 (edited) King Follett DiscourseThis link is to the available recorded versions of the actual King Follet Discourse that Joseph Smith delivered on April 7, 1844. It is a collection of 7 different accounts of the talk that was given by the prophet on that day. It is thought to be the best representation of revealed knowledge concerning the pathway of Man -> God.Lorenzo Snow couplet theology - MormonWiki.orgIs also a great place to start. I think SpiritSeeker already made this link but for some reason I couldnt get that link to work. There are 2 tabs on the top of the web page, don't miss the discussion tab. Now this is some Deep Doctrine. And takes a pretty solid foundation to understand. As you will see if you study it in depth, there still are many controversies that exist concerning the specifics of the topic. Enjoy. Edited May 9, 2009 by mikbone Quote
Hemidakota Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 "I wouldn't say that. There was a couplet coined, "As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become." Now that's more of a couplet than anything else. That gets into some pretty deep theology that we don't know very much about." Not all GA's will have this testimony on 'what was'. This does includes latter-day Prophets. Quote

a-train Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 I'm looking for things regarding humans being like God, and how God once was like man, and if there were infact Gods before god now..I am new, and don't even own any Mormon books, so please; bare with me.Also I'd like some suggestions as to what a new reader might want to read, especially one with my particular interests in mind.-----Now; I tried to post this in scripture reading, but I was not allowed there for some reason. Thanks in advance for your replies. The foremost volume which demonstrates unequivically the fact that God was born in physical form as an infant, grew to adulthood, died, and was resurrected is the New Testament. Jesus is God. The first page of the Book of Mormon plainly says that its purpose is to convince both Jew and Gentile that "Jesus is the Christ, THE ETERNAL GOD".Jesus is an eternal being, no being existed before Him because He has always existed. He is also the species of 'God' and bears the name of 'God'.Where confusion begins is with the notion that God and man are two different species. This is not so. The New Testament makes plain that man is the offspring of God. Jesus did not take on a new species when He was born of Mary. The species of God and man are the same. God is a man, man is a god.Once this is understood, the trouble is gone. The definition(s) of God which have come from the Great Apostasy are no better than the traditions of idol worship from antiquity. Such definitions make of Him a nebulous omnipresent nothing. He is stripped of corporeal existance, the Saviour's life is nothing but a presentation to us by a Being completely unknowable by us. He is without body, parts, or passions. Such foolishness also includes the notion of modalism wherein the Three Personages of the Godhead are equated to mere roles in which a singular Being acts.Brining our heads above the surface of the flood of these fallacies, we come to the question of the Father and His history. If introduced to the truths thereof before understanding the true nature of the Saviour, it will be impossible to make sense of it. The Father also endured at some time a mortal life and rose to Celestial splendor as did the Son. The details of this history are completely unrevealed and assertions of any specifics are simply speculations. So what scriptures teach that God was once a man? The entire New Testament does.-a-train Quote
Maya Posted May 10, 2009 Report Posted May 10, 2009 That's interesting. So where has that experience brought you since being in my postion more or less?
