Elphaba
Madison 3rd street, which is located on Robertson Blvd., in Los Angeles California, has raised quite a stir with neighbors. The controversy is surrounding their store's display window. It has a nontraditional Nativity Scene. Three Wise Woman and a Virgin Mary that is dressed in a sexy, very short dress, barely covering her legs ...which are spread open.Art or Over the Top? ....A Provocative Nativity Scene - CNN iReportI found it all intriguing. I don't see Mary's dress as very sexy, nor is it very short. The tops of her legs are covered fine, except where she lifts her knee and the dress falls to the side. I agree that is probably offensive to believers, but to me, the dress did not evoke sex. I especially thought the description was inaccurate when it said Mary's legs are spread open. When I hear "woman's legs are spread open, she's either in stirrupts, or in a position designed to arouse. That's not the case here. However, this is not an art gallery, and if the neighbors are offended, it has every right to ask that she be given a longer dress to wear. RachelleDrew
Yeah, the description is kind of misleading. I don't think it's so offensive, just kind of stupid looking.
hordak
Yeah, the description is kind of misleading. I don't think it's so offensive, just kind of stupid looking.I concur. I bet the contravesry surrounding it will help to increase the interest in it and therefor the stores revenue .I believe "offensive" things like this are best treated the same way we teach our children to "fight the boogie man"Ignore it and it will "go away"
Wingnut
I don't think it's offensive, but it is in poor taste. It's weird, and like Rachelle said, stupid-looking.
boyando
After thinking about it, for about 39 seconds, I think it is over the top, art. More message art. "Wise-Women shop at Madison's". And is that Joseph I see, sporting a cute little off the shoulder number?

mightynancy
Okay, so Mary in a party dress is a bit much. But the angel, halfway ascended into the ceiling? Inspired!

ADoyle90815
I'm not offended at all, as it's been done through the centuries in religious art.
Bini
Interesting share, Pam. I personally don't find it offensive. I think the display is very creative and I actually like the look of the so-called "Wise Men". But I completely understand how many people may be offended by this. Still, I daresay that people will get riled up over just about anything these days. Where is the line drawn?

ozzy
First, dumb. Second, a prime example of yet another attempt to capitalize on religious tradition.
Guest mormonmusic
I think the way Mary is sitting is provocative, actually. I wouldn't have even chanced it. It's irreverent to the Mother of Christ. This is starting to remind me of the controversy over a chippendale-like calendar featuring scantily clad LDS returned missionaries.
