Temple Square

I had a chance to go to SLC for the first time yesterday. I went to Temple Square and was shown around by 2 sister missionaries. I have to say I was totally flabbergasted by the amount of time and effort put into this place. My last stop on the tour was the Christos, it was awesome! The feeling of the place gave me goosebumps. My young tour guides did an excellent job. I can't wait until I can go again.

You're absolutely right, Pam.

During Christmas I wanted to walk the grounds but hubby complained about the crowded parking and we passed on it. Do they allow homeless people to enter Temple Square? I've seen them lingering around outside but I can't recall ever seeing them inside.. They have the cleanest and most lush gardens there, if I had nowhere to go, you'd bet I'd be lounging out on their front lawn :Þ

The Church offers free bus tickets over to Welfare Square for the needy who want the help--they just need to go to the information desk in the lobby of the Church Office Building. Otherwise: security personnel can ask the homeless and/or panhandlers to leave Temple Square (which is private property), but not the surrounding sidewalks (which are not).

i went last summer. limited time, i could have spent days watching and pushing all the buttons of the displays and watching all the videos in the visitors center. unfortunately my friends had all been so they were bored.

i have to say i was unimpressd with the inside of the salt lake temple. well, i hate victoriana, and it was, uh, very victorian. the castle/cathedral like exterior of the temple did not match the interior. claustrophobic seating as well. too difficult to do all the temple stuff in those tiny horrible awful cramped seats, packed in like sardines.

i walked away, saying, never again...

There's a definite discontinuity between the inside and outside of the SL temple . . . of course, the exterior designer was dead by the time they got around to finishing the interior, so that's probably part of the issue. I don't mind most of it, though the Celestial Room is perhaps a little bit of overkill.

The interior photos from the early 20th century taken for Talmage's The House of the Lord show the interior decor used to feature a lot of portraits of Church leaders (which I don't particularly miss), and a lot of exposed woodwork (which I do miss, most of it having been painted over).

The interior of the temple reflects the style and standards of the time. I think it's cramped simply because it is probably the busiest temple of the church. They even had to add additional sealing rooms to accommodate all the marriages. Plus, people were just smaller back in the day, so the seating is tight.

ya they can go through, altho i'd wager that if they're caught sleeping on the grounds or bothering too many people for handouts that theyd get escorted out, don't know for sure tho.
