Further, Jesus did indicate that many who claim to follow him really do not.

I always wondered what He meant by that. If he meant there are people who say they are Christian but in their hearts don't really believe in Him -- that makes sense. If He's referring to people who don't really make any attempt to follow him after confessing their faith in him -- then yes.

But the statement seems to be leveled even at people who are doing their best to follow him, but for one reason or another, arent' accepted. For example, when he says people will say "Didn't we cast out devil's in your name", He replies "I never knew you".

What are they doing that makes them so unacceptable to Him when they are apparently trying their best to follow him?

I've never thought about it before, but now after what you just said, I'm curious as well. One thought comes to mind though- casting out demons in the name of Jesus is an act- acts alone don't cut it. "You will know them by their fruits"- a fruit can appear delicious and wholesome on the outside, but still be rancid inside. Just a thought.

Oh lots of things could prove unacceptable. To use an LDS term, PRIESTCRAFT would be a huge one...send me $50 brother, and I"ll send you a hanky anointed with my prayers and a drop of 100% authentic olive oil, from Jersualem...

Then there are those organizations that extol the moral teachings of Jesus, but refuse his claims to being the exclusive Christ, the only begotten of God.

And, with no disparagement intended, Muslims believe in Jesus as a holy prophet, miraclel-worker, born of a virgin. And yet, they do not consider themselves to be Christians at all.

Choseph, my quip was directed more at the LDS here, who believe there are three heavenly kingdoms, with only the highest one offering exaltation and the continual presence of the Father.

Adding clarity here, even in the highest kingdom, there is but one state that truly offers eternal progression. Not all in the church will receive it unless they receive it by the same methods that Joseph receives it. As there is no temple sealing guarantee anyone of us unless who heard it from the Godhead or their assigned servant directly.

Even the 144,000 chosen, they were already High Priest ordained but require the final heavenly seal by the Lord servants before going out into the world doing the world wide calamities. They are called because of their purity and humility before GOD. This measurement is not an outward appearance but follows the same internal measurement we seen in [King] David’s day when called to be the King over Israel.

"catholic" is another word for "universal." Some of the creeds spoke of the "holy catholic church." At the time, there were no denominations. It simply denoted the universal Christian church. Basically the fellowship of all Believers.

Let's be catholic then. :)

I do too, I think its a stupid statement that people repeat over and over without thought - its habit rather than conviction in most case IMHO.

except for the ones who have come to know that, of course :P

(half-serious)

I don't see anything more wrong with it than anything else. NOt everyone has had their mustard seed grown all the way when they bear theirs.
