Guest mormonmusic Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 I was posting in another thread and realized my list of contemporary LDS musical artists was in no way contemporary! So, I wonder if any one can name the big name LDS musical artists of today? During my heyday, when on my mission we were allowed to listen to any music we wanted provided we could pray with it on (yep, that's what our mission president said), the big name artists were: Janice Kapp Perry Bryce Neubert Afterglow Lex De Azevido Michael McLean Kenneth Cope Who are the big artists of today who are putting out original music suitable for LDS audiences? Does anyone know? Quote
Guest mormonmusic Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 I'm talking about rock/pop types of artists by the way, in the same vein as the artists I've named above. Love the irony about Donny and Marie -- although I never considered them LDS artists because their music was meant for the secular audience. Quote
Tarnished Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Is there any hip LDS music? Yes, but we need more | Mormon TimesMaybe this article may help a bit. Quote
Wingnut Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 Before I read your disclaimer, MM, I saw your list and thought "those were contemporary LDS artists of the 80's and 90's..." So, you're looking for artists of LDS music, not just artists who happen to be LDS? Hilary Weeks Dallyn Vail Bayles Jenny Jordan Frogley Mercy River Cherie Call Kenneth Cope (a little still, but not much...he's barely hanging on) Mindy Gledhill Jenny Phillips April Meservy Jenny Oaks Baker (What's with all the Jenny's?) Guest mormonmusic Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 So, you're looking for artists of LDS music, not just artists who happen to be LDS?That's right -- artists that are LDS AND create music that is spiritual and targeted toward a spiritual audience, like Kenneth Cope, Bryce Neubert, Michael McLean, etcetera used to be.I'll check out some of the people on your list -- who are the top 3 for pop/rock style of music? He is on tour right now with an off-Broadway company as an understudy for Phantom of the Opera, and performed the night some friends of mine went to see the show here.Hillary Weeks is very slow and spiritual, not terribly upbeat. Try searching some of the other artists on iTunes or Amazon and listen to clips for an idea of them.I also enjoy some non-LDS contemporary Christian artists that are uplifting as well. Quote
pam Posted August 26, 2010 Report Posted August 26, 2010 There is a friend of mine who is coming more and more into the spotlight with certain artistic projects. Darin Southam. He's amazing. He's a singer, songwriter, and actor. He's done movies for Disney and has put out a cd. Quote
