What is the difference between a prophet and a revelator?

We sustain the prophet as Prophet, Seer and Revelator in our Church conferences.

Just wondering if anyone has ever delved into the difference between a Prophet and a Revelator specifically. Why the distinction?

I like Elder John A. Widtsoe's words:

“A prophet is a teacher of known truth; a seer is a perceiver of hidden truth, a revelator is a bearer of new truth. In the widest sense, the one most commonly used, the title, prophet, includes the other titles and makes of the prophet, a teacher, perceiver, and bearer of truth."

Many times in ancient scripture we see a “King” seek counsel with the prophets (plural). These prophets were men of G-d that by calling testify of the Messiah or Christ. Revelation chapter 19 tells us that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophesy. From time to time we see in ancient scriptures where a female was given the title of prophet or prophetess. In essence anyone that is called to testify of the Messiah (Christ) is a prophet.

A revelator is someone that holds the keys of revelation by priesthood calling. There is only one person on earth at any time that holds all the keys of revelation. In general we call this person a prophet and revelator. In truth portions of the keys of revelation can be delegated – but never all the keys of revelation. For example a Bishop holds jointly with other priesthood authorities the keys of revelation for his ward which include both the members and non-members of his ward.

A seer is a priesthood holder who is given the calling and access to a seer stone to be a seer.

In this last dispensation known as the dispensation of restoration the first presidency and the quorum of the 12 are called as prophets, seers and revelators. There never has been a time and place where so many were called to witness to the world. This is done at this time as both and witness and warning to the world that the time of the Messiah is at hand and to prepare a people to receive the Messiah when his Kingdom is established.
