Mousa Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Hello, I'm a student of Business administration ( Finance ) in Saudi Arabia. In our curriculum I'm require to take 4 islamic studies courses. I'm currently studying the second one, which mainly relates to comparative studies with other religions. I have to write a research paper and the religion that was assigned to me is Mormonism and their relation to islam. The paper has to be finished and presented to a number of classes ( 200 students approx. ) I was hoping i could get some information here. If this is a strictly mormon forum, then i sincerely apologize and i hope i haven't caused any disturbance. thanks! Quote
Faded Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 Welcome! Pop a post into general discussion and tell us what you have so far and we'll see about clarifying and explaining things. I presume that you're Muslim? Sufi, Shi'a, Sunni or other? Quote
Mousa Posted September 13, 2010 Author Report Posted September 13, 2010 Yes I'm a Sunni Muslim which accounts to roughly 85-90% of the muslim population. My knowledge regarding your creed or religion is very limited. It was for that reason i was chosen to do this assignment. My Professor was reading an article about your church and I asked how your creed is different then that of a catholic. My professor then was alarmed by my ignorance and assigned me with this project. Again i apologize for not knowing on which part of the forum i should post. I found some websites speaking of your creed but i don't think they were accurate since they were describing it as a cult. I don't think a mormon would call his religion a cult therefore, i discard any websites like that as bad propaganda. Should i post in the discussion forum? is it proper for me to ask questions or is this websites strictly caters to mormons? Please enlighten me. Quote

Faded Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 I would like to suggest Gospel Boards: "Learn about the Mormon Church". I couldn't think of the right section to post in so I just threw out the all-purpose forum board. LOL. Quote
Maya Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 Hello and welcome. Yes if someone says we are a cult it is not a mormonsite but those against us. I think there was a tread here or somewhere about I think it was Qaran (Koraani) 133 where it talks about a people at the end of the time, who are very good, but they are not muslims, but muslims do not yet know who they are... maybe LDS? Here is the adress to Church defence, who find answer to the antimovements claims: FAIR Topical Guide Quote
FunkyTown Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 Welcome! There are several similarities between the LDS church and the Muslim one: 1) Fasting - Fasting is an important part of the LDS faith and the Muslim faith, with fasts taking place every month. 2) A prohibition against alcohol. 3) Dispensationalism - The idea that prophets disperse truths for their time period. There are far more than that, but that's something to get you started. Quote
Faded Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 The website that was specifically set up for giving introduction to our faith is: Mormon.org Quote
TheActualLiz Posted September 18, 2010 Report Posted September 18, 2010 Mausa, Hello and welcome! That's such a wonderful assignment! I firmly believe that it is possible and beneficial to learn about and celebrate other religions while devoutly practicing the faith that is right for you. There are many great things about the LDS church. Sometimes there will be overlap and sometimes there will be differences. I have lots of questions for you and would be more than happy to answer any questions I can. I hope we can become friends and develop some wonderful discussions. Best wishes, Liz Quote
Moksha Posted September 19, 2010 Report Posted September 19, 2010 The most obvious similarity is that the both were started by Prophets and they both adhere to the Abrahamic tradition. Differences? Well, one eats falafel and one eats Jell-O. Quote
Dravin Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 The website that was specifically set up for giving introduction to our faith is: Mormon.orgAnd in that vein the official website of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has a section that is essentially a list of topics for frequently asked questions, you can find that here: http://lds.org/ldsorg/v/index.jsp?locale=0&vgnextoid=76bd3f7719605010VgnVCM1000004e94610aRCRD you may want to make sure you check out the section on Priesthood and Godhead. Also you may find this informative when dealing with the Book of Mormon (which we consider scripture) Book of Mormon the thing of biggest interest to you is probably the "Title Page", "Introduction", and a "Brief Explanation about the Book of Mormon".The Book of Mormon is a significant difference between us and other Christians who accept only the Bible as scripture (we actually accept more than just the Bible) so understanding just what it is might be helpful. Also there are the 13 Articles of Faith, which were written by Joseph Smith (whom we believe was a Prophet, we also believe there is a current prophet) to a newspaper in response to the question, "What do you believe?" Anyway, a link: Articles of Faith 1.Sorry, if I'm not careful I'll just flood you with links so I'll stop now. Quote
bl8tant Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 Ahlan wa sahlan, Mousa. There are two articles from church magazines that I think may be of interest to you:"A Latter-day Saint Perspective on Muhammed" "Islam and Mormonism— A Comparison"And of course, you can always ask us whatever questions you may have!
