Traveler Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 This weekend scenes for a movie will be shot in Midway Utah. Anyone in the area of SLC Utah - that would like to volunteer to be an extra will likely be used - lots of extras are needed this weekend. The movie is about a global power outage and girds failure and the effects in a small isolated resort town.Anyone interested contact the casting manager at e-mail [email protected]. Quote
annewandering Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 how do you lose power globally? that makes no sense. Quote

Traveler Posted April 10, 2012 Author Report Posted April 10, 2012 how do you lose power globally? that makes no sense.A super massive solar flair EMP (electro magnetic pulse) - similar to a nuclear event but on a global scale. Any electrical device in operation or unshilded would be overloaded and fry the circuts. The Traveler Quote
Blackmarch Posted April 10, 2012 Report Posted April 10, 2012 how do you lose power globally? that makes no sense.A few well placed nukes would do the trick. Quote
annewandering Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 well nukes wouldnt do it. too many smaller areas with their own productions. would solar flares affect all 360 degrees of the globe? i wouldnt think so unless it lasted for 24 hours? how long do they usually last? Quote
slamjet Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 When our hero is deep in a cave, where does the light come from? When our hero is in love, where does the music come from? Some questions cannot be answered but we must accept with faith Quote
Dravin Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Cascading failure - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaYou'd need to have several continents affected. A cascading failure of the North American power grid won't leave Europe in a lurch. Not that one can't think of workable, movie workable at least, ways to hit most of the major areas. Quote
annewandering Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Well if you consider the world to be us then it works fine. :) I do love disaster movies by the way. ^^ Quote

The damage mainly comes from fried electronics, which is where the real damage comes from.Older equipment that use heftier gear generally suffer less because of thicker wiring, and more space between wiring. Traveler Posted April 11, 2012 Author Report Posted April 11, 2012 BTW this is not the typical disaster movie - it is not so much of a man verses nature as it is a study in a break down of social norms. Mostly it is about what happens when there is not enough for everybody and how people react. Anyway the need right now is for about 50 extras on Saturday. - Should be fun. Quote

bcguy Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 (edited) Two such events could occure. One, just a few high altiture thermal nuclear detonations would cause the atomic weapon to blast xray radiation which would strip the electrons out of there orbits. This energy termed Electro Megnetic Pulse, would race to the plants surface. Any unprotected electronics, or power grid would be energized shorting out the electronics. in 1986 I was stationed at Kirkland AFB and was down the street from the EMP wooden tressel. Military aircraft of all kinds were towed onto the tressel and blasted with a simulated EMP Pulse to test its electronics for EMP hardening. File:TRESTLE EMP simulator - B1B Bomber - Kirtland Air Force Base - 1989.jpeg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaAnother possibility of a global blackout is another Carington like Solar flair effect. It happened once, in 1859 in which there was a massive solar flair discharge that disrupted Morse Code stations around the United States. There were some cases of Morse code stations were catching fire! If this ever happened again, expect a global blackout with resulting riots and lawlessness. The power grid would be down for months or years. The reason is transformers are not a off the shelf item. It takes months to have one made and shipped. So the conclusion is, if you are smart, buy all the old non powered kitchen and garden hand tools you can buy Edited April 11, 2012 by bcguy Quote
