Misshalfway Posted June 26, 2012 Report Posted June 26, 2012 Why is it that kids fuss over the peas touching the potatoes, yet they can go to Coldstone and mix cottoncandy icecream with jr.mints, peanutbutter, and gummy fish? Quote
Guest Posted June 26, 2012 Report Posted June 26, 2012 I don't know, but I'm just about fed up with everybody in this house griping at me about one thing or another. I think I'll go to Cold Stone, by myself. Quote

Wingnut Posted June 26, 2012 Report Posted June 26, 2012 I grew up scooping my mashed potatoes onto my plate, making a well with the serving spoon, filling it with peas, and then topping it with gravy. That's just how we did it in my family, and I can't eat mashed potatoes any other way even now. Quote

That's just how we did it in my family, and I can't eat mashed potatoes any other way even now.Growing up one of the common meals was Sausage (kielbasa) and sauerkraut with peas, mash potatoes, and brown gravy. I grew up cutting up the sausage into bite sized pieces and mixing it into the mash potatoes along with the sauerkraut, peas, and gravy. Alternatively you cut the sausage thin, skewer it with your fork and scoop up the sauerkraut, pea, gravy, and mash potato mixture with it.My wife thinks I'm strange, but it's the taste of childhood for me. dahlia Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Growing up one of the common meals was Sausage (kielbasa)I love kielbasa and it is one of my little joys now that I'm eating meat again. I've always made it with peppers, onions, tomatoes & tomato/pasta sauce, over rice. A big hunk o'kielbasa with some mustard ain't bad, either. Quote

I don't much care for mashed potatoes without something to mix in, though I prefer green beans over peas. Quote

Misshalfway Posted July 3, 2012 Author Report Posted July 3, 2012 I need to know......why people insist on tampering with their mashed potatoes? They are meant to be plain with only butter and salt. Anything else is .... is...well, a crime against vegetables. Quote

Anything else is .... is...well, a crime against vegetables.Mash potatoes need help, such as some roasted garlic (yum), now a good baked potato needs very little. Butter, some salt and pepper, or if trying to reduce the calories a little, light sour cream instead of butter. People also tend to ruin baked sweet potatoes, all it needs is some butter, salt, and pepper, a dash of nutmeg if feeling fancy. Piling on brown sugar and marshmallows is a bit overkill unless you're trying to make a dessert. Now rutabaga, all that needs is to be tossing in oil, seasoned with some salt and pepper, and roasted. Jennarator Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 I saw something on this just the other night, and part of the reason is genetics. Why we like the flavors we do - Chicago TribuneThat explains why my step son wipe off his fork between eating each item on his plate. Apparently me husband used to do the same as a child. He never told his son he did that, he just did that. Quote
Iggy Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 As a wife, I need to know why Husband scrapes the fork with his teeth to remove the vegetables and mashed potatoes but NOT the meat? It sets my teeth on edge and I have to turn my hearing aids off so I can't hear it or I think I just may yank the fork out of his hand and tell him NO TEETH- USE YOUR LIPS. Also, in his family they slurp and smack when they eat. ARGH! Close your mouth when you chew. It is my understanding that this may be the preferred way to eat in some cultures-to show that you are enjoying the food, but Hubby and family are White American back to Plymouth Rock. They don't have sinus problems, or in other words, they are able to breathe just fine with their mouths closed. At least I am blessed with wearing two hearing aids that when turned off, they are effective ear plugs. Quote
