gmj09914220 Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 Hello, I am a recent convert (Nov 2012). I just graduated from college and am thinking about going to physical therapy school. But I am also considering going a mission. I would be 23, almost 24, by the time I went on my mission. Any thoughts on whether I should pursue the misison route? Or the get married and PT route? Also, I have taken 4 years of Spanish, have some basics of French, Italian, and Portuguese, and my undergrad was in education with a concentration in history/world studies. Would that have any bearing on my mission call? Just looking for some thoughts. Thanks! Quote
pam Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 Of course only you can make that decision. How difficult would it be for you to continue your studies once you returned? Would not serving a mission be something that you think you would regret not having done all your life? Quote

Ultimately you go where the Lord needs you, though even if you aren't Spanish speaking it may still come in handy. I know on my mission (Spokane) knowing some Spanish would have come in handy. As far as your degree I can see that being useful, though I'm not sure just how much cross over there will be. I imagine your classes didn't cover all that much about bearing testimony and receiving revelation to know what to say/teach. As far as the history focus, it could be helpful in understanding the people you serve. Quote

Note the importance of the word "serving" or service. My advice - which has been wrong on occasions - Consult the L-rd in fasting a prayer how you can best serve. Then think of the answer to how to serve in terms as something that can vary as you journey through life. The Traveler Quote
idahommie Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 GmJ, Pray about it. I regret never serving a mission and now spend as much time helping the missionaries that I can. Good luck though with either route you decide to take. Quote

Thanks! If you have the desire to serve, and the means to do so, then do so.Will your experience in languages affect to where you are callled? quite possibly (altho perhaps not in any way that you foresee). It seems that most people i know that have had multiple language experience who go on missions even to ones that would seem that would not require it end up in situations where only they can help because of the languages they know. mnn727 Posted January 8, 2013 Report Posted January 8, 2013 (edited) I am going to be a bit different than everyone else. First I commend your desire, however as a convert of just 3 months now I doubt you have learned enough to be able to teach it yet. Also you won't be eligible to go to the Temple for 9 more months and that's a requirement for serving a mission. Here is what the Prophet Joseph Smith told his brother (who was with him since the beginning) Doctrine and Covenants 11:21 Seek not to declare my word, but first seek to obtain my word, and then shall your tongue be loosed; then, if you desire, you shall have my Spirit and my word, yea, the power of God unto the convincing of men. M_T_E Posted January 9, 2013 Report Posted January 9, 2013 Go with your heart, thats what I say. I understand enough about the church at this point to know that serving a mission is a very big thing, if it is something that you will look back on and regret not doing when you are older then you should seriously consider pursuing that path. Especially if you have no issues with resuming where you left off with your work, college, ect after your mission is complete. Quote
