I was talking to some missionaries today and we got on the subject of chastity. I was raped five years ago by four men who grabbed me when I was out jogging. I was wearing something completely modest (sweatpants that were not tight fitting and a baggy t shirt) and I fought my hardest, but did not manage to keep them off. I didn't tell the missionaries this, but asked what they think about rape victims.

One proceeded to tell me that rape did not exist. The other said that it was always the fault of the rape victim and that they must beg our Heavenly Father for forgiveness, but will never be able to repent fully and would most likely go to hell anyway. They said that rape victims have to take responsibility for what they've done.

I just wanted to know how to feel about this. Do all Mormons feel this way? Am I disgusting and dirty because of this? Will other Mormons always chastise me for this and believe I am impure?

No Mormons feel this way, at least not any I'm aware of. Either there was a very serious misunderstanding between what you told the missionaries and what the missionaries said in reply, or else you got a very, um, unique pair of missionaries.

Rape does not make you impure and is not a violation of the law of chastity. It can, however, mess you up for a long time if you don't psychologically undo the damage.

Absolutely not. This is not a common thought or feeling regarding rape and its victims. Though I must admit, I'm rather surprised that these would be the responses you were given.

If a missionary said that, it needs to be reported to the mission president so that he can be sternly corrected.

Exactly. If they're saying anything like that to investigators, they're going to drive people away from the Church rather than bring them in. I'm not even a woman, and I would have tossed them out the door and written a nasty letter to the bishop demanding that they lose my number and address for that comment.

I struggle to believe that anyone would say or believe something like you have described, especially missionaries. Rape, IMO, is among the most vile and disgusting acts that can ever occur. The person being assaulted is in no way involved in a sin.

I see that you are only 18 and this occurred when you were 13? So very sorry......

These are some crazy politicians ideas and they are just that. Crazy. NO person who has been raped, molested or abused is guilty of any sin.

There certainly is rape and anyone that denies that is flat out wrong.

Dress, attractiveness, how hard a person fights back is immaterial. Rape is not about sex or how hard you can fight.

Yeah, it's too bad when missionaries let their democrat leanings affect their teaching.

You have got to be kidding. And hey thanks. I didnt call your party freaking perverts for their weird ideas on how women cant get pregnant if they were really raped, how women who use contraception are skanks, or any of the other many crazy conservative ideas spoken this last year. In fact I didnt mention any party or political persuasion at all. Leave it up to paranoid conservatives to jump to irrational conclusions. I am out of here till I get the armor back up to deal with you conservatives again.

...and the thread devolves into political backbiting.

To the OP:

I am having a lot of trouble wrapping my head around two missionaries saying this! What are they odds of two mentalities getting paired together?

I think the general Mormon view on the subject has been presented very well.

Didn't want to threadjack--but we've got the band, we've got the cake, we've got the guests, so I guess we may as well have the party:

Annewandering, you can't have it both ways. Either your post was intended as a slam against conservatives, or it wasn't. But it does seem a little incongruous to take your pot shot, innocently say "who, me?" when someone calls you out for politicizing a non-political thread, and then stage-whisper about how paranoid and crazy all those conservatives are.

Who else here likes waffles?

I do! I made some yesterday morning. They were yummy. My husband, who I think is getting confused by night shifts, turned his into a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

All righty, I'm going to attempt to get my giant body comfortable in bed. May this thread go where it will.

I love waffles! I miss them! Not much room for waffles when low-carbing. :(

I love waffles with butter and raspberry preserves on them.

I used to like waffles, but then I saw a democrat eating them.

Besides, breakfast foods make me want coffee.

(Odd, since I never really liked coffee first thing in the morning anyway.)

(Bacon is not a breakfast food unless it's sitting in the puddle of maple syrup that ran off the pancakes.)

I purposefully put syrup on my sausage links, because *thats.the.way.I.like.them*

I know right....like Senator Bob Menendez...I guess it's only rape in America if you have sex with underage girls....and not in Dominican Republic? loop hole?
