I came across some pics recently of Miley Cirus today and the pics were highly suggestive and nearly nude. Why is it that these young gals that were once seemingly innocent little pop stars...Brittney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, etc all seem to grow up and race to be as crude, sexual and ..dare I say slutty as possible as soon as they are 18 or so?

What am I missing here? Sign of the times?

Jeez Bytor - it's not that hard. They do it when they turn 18, because at 18 it becomes legal to do so.

Go ask any female pop recording artist or actress. They can explain how such a move is considered by most in the industry to be a natural and necessary step in order to forward one's career. If you find the occasional one who did not bow to the pressure, you will still hear the stories about the pressure, and how refusal hurt their career.

From Debbie Gibsons wiki page...kind of highlights everything you said.

The March 2005 issue of Playboy featured a nude pictorial of Gibson, coinciding with the release of her single, "Naked". She has said that the magazine had asked her five times to pose for them since she turned 18. She agreed to pose in an effort to revamp her image, describing how one casting call called her agent, not realizing that Gibson had long since outgrown her teenage image.

The sad part about it is that besides the scummy people in the entertainment business, I highly doubt that anybody in her fan base would purchase her music because she posed nude.

People in her fan base would already purchase her music. People outside her existing fan base might purchase it after seeing nude pictures of her.

Yeah....becuase how you look nude directly correlates to level of musical talent.

I have friends (LDS) that have been in the entertainment business for over 50 years. They remained true to their covenants and...they are still in the business over 50 years later. Didn't need any nude photos or scandals to achieve that.

I don't suppose that most people who deliberately seek out nude pictures of female celebrities are usually thinking with their heads.

True. But what puzzles me is why they all seem to make the leap to highly sexualized material and presentation. Is it because they feel like teens no longer listen and adults think they are a teen only artist?

sex sells, look at any beer commercial... or toothpaste commercial...or clothing- point is, to a great percent, sex sells and the music industry is no different then the beer or toothpaste industry, easiest way to stay afloat and make a dime

I'd love to see it go back to what it used to be. Any ideas on how to make that happen?

I think it is happening albiet slowly. There has been a significant rise in Indie music. It's not just a hipster thing anymore. YouTube, Facebook and other social networking is allowing bands to build a following outside of the "industry".

I think Canada has a healthier way of building talent then the U.S. does.

Either way money and fame with rare exception tend to push people away from the gospel.

Think..

Aaron Eckhart

Amy Adams

Julianne Hough

Katherine Heigl

Christina Aguilera (Her parents met at BYU, but divorced when she was seven.)

Ryan Gosling LOL@Ryan

...all inactive

well... see... there's not much to be made by simply staying in Canada, people go to the US to "make it big" that's where all the money to be made is.

Most pop stars are millions in debt.

All the money the studio "gives" them is a LOAN. Its fronted in order to find the album/tours, but the artist is responsible to pay it all back within a certain timeframe.

If they don't sell, then they owe.

If they don't sell ENOUGH, then they owe.

Most pop stars oy ever see the money from merchandise sales (if you want to actually support the band, buy a teeshirt, not the music).

Basic demographics... In order to sell enough to pay back their fronts, pop stars need the teen/20s demographic. Which they lose while they're teens themselves, most of the time. A lot of studios will actually "multi front" (take losses to a degree) during teen years, to get a popstar to 18 so they can start making serious money. But one is still left hundreds of thousands to millions in debt. And when you're that deep in debt, they own you. And your family.

Even then, while there are millions at play, its a reeeeeeal gamble for the artist.

A lot of Big Names (who spent 20 years famous & broke) are pushing the Internet music genre in favor of the artist. Its still iffy as to whether or not it will have any effect. In the meantime, artists still sign with studios. And when you've signed with them, you play by their rules. Which are more heavily in the studio's favor than the Casinos.
